10 Problems Only Smart People Have - Downsides Of Being Highly Intelligent

Believe it or not, there are downsides of being highly intelligent, and there are problems only smart people have. While highly intelligent people are blessed with a great mind, there are some disadvantages of high intelligence.
A high IQ not only equates to an overactive brain, but a hyperactive nervous system as well. Thus, smart people have a more difficult time dealing with external stimuli. This can result in a lack of patience, anxiety and even relationship problems.
And since smart people tend to struggle to find others with a similar level of intelligence, they often lead a very lonely life.

I have to constantly be mindful of how I interact with others less I get comfortable in conversation and my intelligence starts to show. When this happens I have been told I make others uncomfortable and have been referred to as intimidating, strange and off-putting. I have no friends and usually keep to myself for this reason, it's a lonely existence.

Public government run education is the worst imo, it does not cater to peoples individuality with respect to how they learn. For me, I love learning, but school was a nightmare, bullying and boredom had me drop out in high school. I worked for a bit, traveled half my country (Australia) had kids, had many different life experiences, then went to university and did a 4 month bridging course at aged 23, graduated that with really high marks, got into Law and Pre-Med. Now at aged 27, I’ve dropped out of Law because I have decided I just really want to be a doctor so my focus is there. School is really not for everyone, and there are options if it not for you and its totally ok to take those options regardless of what age you are. I think the pressure to finish school is also a problem, especially when we have so many successful people who did it without school.

I almost always got straight Fs. I am considered intelligent by most people around me, though I will not go as to be arrogant and say I am. The School system is unproductive, it kills off one's desire to learn, which is why ignorance is such a problem in America. I personally cannot *stand* to be around people who gossip about social media, modern music, relationships, and etc. I don't understand how they would want to be so simplistic and uneducated when we as humans could accomplish so much more. In society it has always been a ruling class (this goes for all forms of political governments with an existing state, excluding tribal leadership.) Of intelligent people who make most the decisions for society, and refuses to educate commoners anymore than knowledge than they need to survive. To justify this they have used Religion, TV Shows, Music Artists who mumble and are probably talentless, etc. They promote these idols before the common folk, who thus aspire to be these fantasy idols that are in the media, defusing the want to learn, and igniting the path to ignorance. And thus by stating these thoughts I literally came up with within a few minutes, I can prove that you don't need to be a bookworm to be intelligent. Thus I was always disliked by popular kids at my school because I saw beyond their lack of maturity, this angered them, and I even had to defend myself from their annoyance/anger with me. I never thought of myself as having higher intelligence until a customer asked me why I owned a painting business. He then asked if I’d take his pre-employment screening, which included an IQ test. He shook his head afterward and said I’d scored higher than anyone he had ever employed. I was shocked. I started doing some research and found out why I am a loner, but not lonely. I rarely meet people I can engage in meaningful conversation. People don’t understand anything I talk about. It’s frustrating to say the least. The paradox is that I still underestimate my intelligence and consider myself a useful idiot.

@@BlackBeavisThataIsntReallyBlac we don't like movies as they show redundant stuff, unlike some epic ones that need our minds to run. Horror is definitely a no-go, comedy is something we love but most of them feel like bullying someone. So it's mostly about how we dislike things that are the norm in the society like most tests as they actually don't measure someones understanding of a topic. The thing is we like contradictive people who would rather explain, both take and give some wrong assumptions on one's side. How religion is actually something that separates people and how it is rubbed on us to make us follow some rules that they consider normal. Why God was created to make people fear him and make them follow those rules as fear is what makes us do things than love. How many of us follow our passions and paint for a living when we are not good painters? It's the fear that makes us do a random job that can pay for a living rather than follow our passions. Why do most people blame the government that it is not doing anything for them, when they don't spend enough time researching ( at least a few hours) about whom to elect with a neutral eye. Why do people find it more interesting to watch a movie on Toilet paper but not a detailed documentary even when the documentary does have more emotions, facts, and better details on the topic of help we can provide in the scale we are ready to invest our time in. Let me put this scenario, 'I started reading about electron clouds in an atom', I would be thinking about why and how is this a better model of representing the electron and would think about the flaws in it with the knowledge I previously have on this topic, What I realized talking to another person is that they would study for marks and try to get better marks by understanding just what they are presented with on the book and never wonder about the possibilities of colliding electrons and actually understand why they do or don't as they would never have got to that question in their mind. Why do people think the oscar is the most coveted prize in the movie industry when it actually can be rigged as a few actors have someone they like in the shortlisted movie and do actually vote out of respect for them. These things are something people generally believe in and get hurt when we talk about, but they rather don't understand that I would actually take in some things and accept that religion is a good concept in some quantity as people do need rules for the society to function as it lays some foundations to at least debate upon, though I would be mad that they actually also advertise that they are the only religion that is right. This is all fun to me. These are plain and boring things or something sensitive for those around me. Even the above line made me think 'why do people get sensitive, even when you not actually scolding them?', do they seem interesting to you? you are either having a comparable IQ to me or you personally felt or have been a victim of one of those things.

I am an empath and a loner. It's very hard realizing you are actually intelligent when all your life you have been made fun of and put down. It feels incredible to figure out you were the smart one while the ones that mocked you were the dumb asses. I hated high school and college, nothing in those prisoners prove real intelligence besides being able to remember useless stuff. (depending on your major of course) One of the most powerful things smart people do is they are present in the NOW. And are constantly hungry to grow and get better. It takes me longer to get easy things that most people get fast but ONCE I get it down I can teach it, preach it, do it in my sleep. It's very hard being smart in a world full of idiots with voices. May sound harsh but truth is a bitch sometimes to swallow. The arrogance thing cracked me up, when you know too much about deep topics compared to other people that ignorantly ignore a lot of details in life it can be hard when you speak up. It can make you look arrogant and it's a never ending battle. But if you stay quiet and let the idiots walk all over you with their nonsense just to hear themselves look smart, then you wanna scream or leave the room. We are in the age of technology and instant gratification where people have never been stupider or more self absorbed due to social media, etc. No one can live in silence anymore and just be. They have to constantly be busy or doing something to distract themselves from their real issues or demons. How many people actually know themselves? Not many. When you spend years of being alone you start to become very well educated in who you are, what you are about, what you love, hate, you learn about your spirit, your goals, your dreams, fears, etc. These are the topics that go through my mind countless nights. Brilliant people are usually stating the crazy sounding shit and the irony is usually they are so right it scares others so they mock you or brush it off and change the topic.

I was researching whether intelligent people have a harder time socializing. I realized that I must be pretty smart because I find myself having to explain so many things to people, and sometimes feel frustrated (or feel like they are being ignorant) when they make up assumptions or stigmas about others without learning about it (such as making assumptions about mental illnesses (or greatly minimizing somebody's illness in general)). And I sometimes wonder why somebody would criticize such people without researching it first. Other times I have a hard time connecting with people when I am trying to explain a serious health matter and they giggle every time I say the word "brain", or act like I am totally ridiculous when I explain how something seemingly harmless can affect your organs, nerves, and brain. And when people don't believe that brain chemistry doesn't affect anything, even though people all over the world have witnessed the affects that alcohol has on one's brain chemistry. However, I DO get along with people who aren't knowledgeable when they behave in a mature manner; and when I put a smile on their face after telling them about something that they never knew before. I guess it's all about a person's attitude 🙂.

You can say emotional intelligence doesn't exist all you want, but there are definitely ways to let go and learn to function without being so passionate and being offended by being misunderstood and other maladies... shouldn't listen to society all the time and think that the solution to being misunderstood is more intelligence, it's more emotional intelligence and letting go in my experience. Also just because you're highly intelligent doesn't mean that society needs to exploit you, nor you it. At the end of the day we can do whatever we want with our intelligence because who's to say what's right and wrong way to go about it?

My IQ has been tested as off the charts several times. I started taking classes for university credit at age 14, emancipated myself as a legal adult in California Superior Court at 15, and founded my first tax-exempt corporation at 18. I don’t have the patience for most people and find almost everyone to be painfully boring. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The older I get, the less I care about anyone else’s judgments. This has made me happier overall. My circle of real friends is minuscule and heavily populated by people with PhDs, JDs, MDs, and Master’s whom I have known for decades. Smart people tend to flock and stick together over time.

Someone with high intelligence if presented with sufficient evidence will change their mind. If someone will not change their mind when presented with sufficient evidence they are obviously not highly intelligent. That's a no-brainer.

With a high IQ, if you focus your energy and attention on most of the things listed you can change them. Problem for me is after changing them, like improving emotional and social intelligence (very doable) it really doesn't help too much with mental health. Tolerating the ignorance of people is very difficult, realizing the problems of the world in a multidisciplinary perspective and seeing how much actually needs to change to minimize human suffering is extremely depressing, and being very empathetic just makes it so much worse.

@@miguelfenollosa well, the definition of intelligence is to "acquire" and apply. Im sure you werent born with all the intelligence you have lol. Higher IQ doesnt really measure what you know, but rather how you use it effectivly. Regardless of what peterson said, emotional and social skills are learnable, and i wish i knew that much sooner. I say that because, the way i have taught myself to react or act to social and emotional stimuli is WAY better than when i was younger. So i would say that compared to even my younger self let alone others, i am more intelligent in that regard.

Grade & high school offered no challenges. When I went to a university with high expectations, I wasn't the brightest kid in class anymore & faced a rude awakening. My grades weren't straight A's anymore. I struggled for a while. I've several advanced degrees now, in subjects that I love. I still have trouble interacting with people with low or medium IQ's. All my friends were gifted nerds like me. I coped. I hope I didn't offend anyone along the way, & as I was a college professor for the last 20 years of my life, it gave me great joy to see the "ah-ha's" in my students.

If you’re really smart, you’ll learn to discipline your mind so that you can shut it down when you need rest. You will become wise about people so that you become patient with them. You will be humble. You can’t learn if you already know it all. You can’t add anything to a full cup. You will be considerate and not correct others unnecessarily. You will set the bar low and then over-deliver. This will delight people who depend on your efforts. You will study yourself well enough to manage your emotions and make them your slaves, not your masters. You will find appropriate ways to express emotions. You will be open to others’ opinions without necessarily agreeing with them. You will reason from the evidence to the best explanation, including when it upsets your own paradigms. You will pursue good mental hygiene and not let yourself spiral, therefore avoiding most mental health problems. You will learn to relate to others on their level, understanding that relationships are important and love more important than knowledge. You will work hard and smart because success comes no other way. You will be smart enough to be persistent. If you work to discover how best to serve people with your giftings, you will find fulfillment. The people described in this video aren’t really intelligent. Book smarts are a small part of real intelligence.

I skip a lot of classes during my school and university to the point once I almost got dropped because lack of meeting hours with lecturer. But, they gave me a lot of chances because my grade was above average and they just let me finish my studies. These happened since I was 11 until I got my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science 2 years ago. When I look back, I always think, how the hell did I pass all of that considering I fooled around a lot. But, deep in my heart I never felt that I posses high IQ or high intelligent kind of things. My classmate and roommate always gave me snide comments when they study for tests because they saw me just lay around the house smoking, sleeping, watching movies (LOL). When they form a study group I try my best to listen and ask them to repeat to me of what they were studying (this is how usually prepare myself for tests) and when the test result came out, I'm always on par with them and few times I got better result. I just don't think I am that smart, maybe it was out of luck too. The biggest bitch is that it was so hard to sleep, I can't even remember the last time a get a good night sleep, my sleep pattern were ridiculous since I was a child. I was always late to school and classes and when it is too late I just continue to sleep and skipped them. I tried everything to help me fall asleep, nothing works except drugs. Freaking drugs man, the solution to every problem. jk

Hi there! Everything on your list is the story of my life ! I am on anti depressants and I find small talk absolutely boring ! I can see problems ahead when everyone else is blundering into chaos all the time ! My intelligence has saved me on many occasions from doing something stupid. I am 66yrs old now and I never got married and never had children. I am really happy with 2 lovely dogs, 2 racing motorbikes, Xbox 1, Gaming PC for flying aircraft etc. and I've learned how to fix anything that breaks, from engines to welding, to electronics to cooking Chinese , Indian, Italian food etc. All my friends can do their work and nothing else. I also like reading stuff that nobody I know understands, like quantum physics, dark energy, black holes, quasars etc. I am reading Gibbons account of the Decline of the Roman Empire and I am thoroughly enjoying it !!!! I am interested in history beginning with the start of the universe through mass extinctions on earth up to the present day. But I am glad I was born with something of a brain, although I haven't got the best memory in the world, so I'm not a scientist or a doctor! Life has been easy for me ! I would go insane if I had to work really hard, so I did security work because it was easy ! I could not switch off my mind spinning at a tremendous speed when I was young so I drank alchohol in large quantities, but I gave it up 30 years ago and now the constant thoughts are gone. I feel extremely peaceful now and I have been successful in my own small way ! I never made a lot of money, but I earned enough, I had lots of girlfriends with my sharp wit, they seemed to like me ! So on the whole it's better to be intelligent than stupid !!!!

Right now I`m interested in a gigantic gamma ray burst that has no equal ever except for the big bang !!! They also have now found a black hole that has the same mass as our entire Milky Way Galaxy. I think it`s called Ton 61 !!!!

Personally, I think understanding something is far better than being able to remember facts and get 100% for being a memory parrot. Understanding will bring the 100% of practical connecting the dots from scratch and take a lot longer than simply memorizing an answer to a question. But it will take longer to build it than talk about it. It will take longer to join the dots, but you WILL KNOW IT WELL. It will be more than a theory. It will define new theories and exceptions to rules. It will mean someone who knows what they are talking about, instead of a trained parrot that looks to be smart but only repeats what all the other parrots say. Yes there are two extremes of parrots that are trained to be part of the system... those who blindly follow orders and those who are highly intelligent and everyone thinks should know what is going on, but they too are blind faith parrots of the system. UNDERSTANDING is what sees things coming. And considers what to do about it with an OPEN MIND, instead of trained parrot answers. These KNOW what is going on, and are learning how to fix it. So the sooner the intelligent people think out side of the box, and learn to make their own truths of logic and ignore the main stream parrots... the sooner they will have next EVOLUTION of Intelligence. Hence there are prophecies of intelligence and understanding being applied to work out the mysteries of God and spirit. And its NOT what we were force fed. And explaining it will only get two extremes of blind faith for it or against it. But that too is a diversion of the divide and conquer. UNDERSTANDING... without it, your just a parrot, the blind following the blind... With it, you know why your thoughts are as they are and how to make them much greater and open up your potential. Consider all is energy and energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. This evolved into consciousness. This evolved into LIFE FORCE. And it is omnipresent, the building blocks of all things. Harmony with this is LIFE FORCE, and disharmony takes Life Force away. Our minds operate on 95% subconscious programming. This makes us vulnerable to being hacked by MORE INTELLIGENT creatures that would enslave mankind to their control. And prophecies thousands of years old warn of this, say it has happened, and say that we get back control and our destiny. And the evidence is now there for all to see. But an OPEN MIND to get past the mind control of phooey and mockery... and presuming that those in control are not the blind leading the blind, under the greater control of those at the top of the pyramid. Metaphors. See all things as metaphors and you start to see the variables, constants and patterns of the programs. Everything is programmable. Perceptions of reality are programmable. What we BELIEVE with NO DOUBTS is OUR PERCEPTION of Reality. This effects what we expect to happen. And our subconscious decision making will filter out things to MAKE IT HAPPEN. And thus everything is programmable, predictable and prophecy is not a mystery if you know the programs and their workings. And the POTENTIAL of MANKIND is 100s of times more than the trained parrots monkeys that are harvested by those who seek their skills and run the show. Prophecy says the time is now at hand, when we combine SPIRITUAL, Intellectual, Knowledge, Understanding, and activate greater abilities than we have been led to believe we are capable. Impossible is a swtich to prevent you breaking out of the mind prison box. But you will never see it unless you TEST the System to see if it has been corrupted. For to Trust a corrupt system is to be a compartmentalised blind faith TOOL for its agenda to keep control. Are YOU SMART or just a parrot?

My high school teacher said I was retarded. I graduated from college with a little over C average. At age 29 I was made to head a MNC. I created products that win over 50 million customers. Do only one thing and be the best. Put your heart, blood, sweat and tears into it. IQ is over rated. EQ and ability to network is more useful.

Right there with you. GPA in High School was 1.82. Got A’s in classes I liked. Right after school I lived with 3 guys who had just all graduated from University. I listen to all their stories and crazy times and decided I needed to get an Education.. I applied at a Private school and only then discovered I never had taken the SAT or ACT. That was on a Monday. I went straight to a bookstore and bought “ACT For Dummies”. I Read though it 1 or 2 times and took the test on Saturday. Scored high enough that it outweighed the low GPA and enrolled on Academic probation. A year and a half later I started my first of a number of successful business with my last being bought by a large pubic company. School bored me and my method of learning and retaining information doesn’t fit into a school structure. All that said, you said it right, blood, sweat, tears and hard work. That’s what makes a thinker into an executor. Congrats to you. Well done. M

I've worked in construction, server, production, maintenance, warehouse & a few other jobs within 6 years. I always felt like these jobs were never enough. I'd get bored easily and miserable. The only place I found happiness was in college when I'd have history or English class. I want to be a teacher but the market doesn't demand it.

This is almost completely me. I have a 157 IQ but the thing is because the media often highlights these potential down sides with their higher intelligence characters while never truly showing the depths of the upsides it's made many actually afraid of learning. People see on TV that if you're a genius you will suffer from EXTREME loneliness, depression, alcoholism and all sorts of other mental illnesses so they decide to do everything they can to avoid it happening to them contributing greatly to the ever growing and widespread stupidity. While many higher intellect people and genius like myself do have many if not all these issues they can very quite a bit in intensity at any given time depending on a wide, and frankly quite difficult to predict, range of factors. Many highly intelligent people are perfectly capable of functional happily in society at least during some point in their life so whether you're a higher intellect individual or someone that choose to avoid learning as much as possible, don't let the extreme dramatisation of the struggles of genius scare you. If you want to learn about something just go for it and if people around you aren't interested in learning eventually someone will, or they'll just give you a dirty look before matching off.... I just thought they should know that how love is portrayed in the movie they just watched and the entire genre was not only complete garbage but could potentially be really damaging. For most of my life the only example I had for love and relationships was within a movie or TV show so I constantly got myself into trouble, for one thing it prompts us as a society to have these ridiculous standards for what a relationship is SUPPOSED to look like so we may end throwing something with the potential to bring a lot of happiness away simply because it's not like it is in the movies and therefore not good enough, these kinds of shows and movies also instill the ridiculous beliefs that if you went through say all of high school never having a significant other even once than you were some loser with something wrong with you which of course can be detrimental to a person's self esteem often created issues of depression and in some cases even resulting in suicide, and don't even get me started on the whole "you can get the girl if you just don't give up" thing displayed in a lot of movies and shows can promote all sorts of dangerous and toxic behaviors such as stalking. Thanks a lot boy meets world because of you I've had two restraining orders against me, the point is we need to stop glorifying these shows and movies representation of love as some gold standard to strive for since it's not at all like real life. I have no idea how I got on to pointing out how wrong and problematic romance movies really are.... Oh yeah the reaction I got from a random movie theater customer when I told them all about it just yesterday! As long as you don't try to teach people, especially strangers, things like I do you'll probably be fine.

Another major source of frustration is having people say, "You're the smartest person I know," before asking for your input on something, only to then utterly ignore your evidence-packed, logically solid advice...sometimes even going so far as to _argue_ with the person they've _just_ called the smartest person they know! 5:58 - I'm only too happy to change my mind...even going so far as to say, "Thank you!" and shake the hand of any person who successfully persuades me to do so. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier in the video, I'm one of those people who loses sleep considering all the angles, so it's rare for me to encounter details I haven't yet considered. That's not arrogance; it's just a fact. Having said that, I smart enough to know I _don't_ know everything...about anything...so I try to always be open to fresh perspectives. Sadly, as soon as the Logical Fallacies come out to play, I have a hard time not tuning out. As for loneliness, I think, "Suffer," may be a bit strong. As a child, I desperately longed for acceptance, validation, and belonging. However, the older I get, the more I find I _prefer_ solitude, and the more I realize how many of the people whose love I spent all those years chasing, grew up to be people I don't even like...and weren't any better back _then._
