This took me way back. A pro tip for transportation in suitcases: take apart the boxes, fold them carefully and spread the runners across layers of clothing. That way you can fit in more kits. And we all know, more kits = more happiness.
@sloo6425
Жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks. I'm probably going for rare items like figures and Doujin/manga, merch and probably not kits when I'm going there, but that certain helps with the kits I do have at home and I was wondering how to store them without the boxes for space saving reasons (using bags instead of clothes).
For those shopping for Gunpla, do not buy current Gunpla releases at The Gundam Base Tokyo, as they are being sold at retail; just buy the limited edition releases and/or reissues of very old kits there. Instead, go to Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, and Yamada Denki, where regular Gunpla releases are sold at up to 20% off the retail price. Also, Yellow Submarine at Akihabara Radio Kaikan is a godsend, as they sell individual parts runners for most Gunpla kits in case you lost or broke a few parts. For example, I purchased an HGUC The O, but discovered that the kit was missing a bicep armor piece. Fortunately, Yellow Submarine had the complete runner for that kit. I also picked up the runner set for the RG GP01 Core Fighter II, as one of the beam saber handles on mine broke and gluing it back resulted in the Core Fighter permanently locked in Core Block mode.
For anyone looking for the nerefed but still quite glorious Yamada Denki gunpla floor it has been moved to Labl1 Yamada Denki Ikebukuro

Living at Nakano, I gotta say that Nakano broadway is truly a place for more hardcore anime and manga fans. Mandarake could sometimes be overpriced comparing to online shopping (2000 yen at times), but if there is a re-release coming up the kits might have a discount, making them cheaper. Thanks for the video!

I concur. I visit there quite often and prefer it over Akiba. I also love diecast cars so having many shops sell both is a dream for me.
Do keep in mind that the Gundam in Yokohama will be on display until March 31, 2023. No idea what they plan to do with it or that location, so best hurry over if you can. I actually saw it last week and it's definitely a lot cooler and awe inspiring to see in person, highly recommended.

@@orokanamame if the moved it elsewhere or put a new one in it may not be all that bad. Gunpla bar professor TK in nakano. Always worth a visit.
Thanks for the recommendation, I got something to do on Christmas now.
Kinda surprised they let you film or take pictures in the stores. Not sure what Japan's customs or rules are for something like this. But that was nice of them to allow it.
@kakarot197
Жыл бұрын
It varies widely from store to store, but most stores were okay with filming as long as I didn't bother the other customers. Some actively encouraged pictures/filming and sharing it online, some only allowed pictures, some required e-mailing for permission and others didn't allow anything period. Also, since Tokyo is used to tourists, the stores there are probably more open to people recording there.
@sloo6425

Just gesture and ask them politely, they love please and thank you. I've lost the number of times the Japanese (and to be fair other) tourists in the past ask me if they can take pictures for them and help them out with stuff and I intent to reciprocate when I'm there. x)
I think the coolest revelation here was that Scope Dog statue had no idea one existed.
Only thing I did not know about was the Gundam statues in Inagi. I've been able to make it to Tokyo a couple times a year the past few years, and Surugaya has been the best consistent place for finding those rare kits or PBandai I missed out on. But you're absolutely right, explore every little store if you have time, you can find some of the coolest little homages to Gundam or a rare kit at a second hand store that doesn't advertise it has gunpla available.
Thank you for posting this two weeks before my trip to Japan :D

Just went to Tokyo last month, went to many of these places. Thank you
wow, i got a 80/110% on this list of locations. the first madarake was right beside my hotel on my trip this past november. i didnt see Gee store, Inagi and the iikebukuro store. i did make up that extra 10% by adding a place you didnt list in the video: Tokorozawa Sakura town. they had manga museum and anime themed manhole covers including gundam. there was also a manga hotel but i dont know if gundam stuff was present there. i didnt see gundam cafe back in 2019 so i made sure to see Yokohama bay one and actually buy something there to eat. i didnt score a tower ticker but 2.5 shows at ground level was enough to satisfy my gundam itch. got a gundam themed bubble tea bottle there

Nakano Broadway was great. I got great deals on figures and a rare art book. Id say if you spend some time in Tokyo window shop at other places first, and see if you can find a better deal at Nakano, also if you are willing to buy it used. I would also recommend Yodabashi Camera. Its 9 stories, and one floor is huge with toys and model kits. It has a great food court on the 8th floor too. Each level is the size of a best buy - one for different kinds of electronics and appliances.
When I hear Tomino said women viewers are the one who save Gundam, I am quite doubt at first. But after I saw the amount of Yaoi doujinshi of Gundam, I change my mind. Gunpla saves Sunrise, but Yaoi save Gundam.
wow u had to make this video right after my trip to tokyo last week,,,
Bro this might be heaven for me
I went and visit most of these stores back in 2018. I'm hoping to come back some time next year.
Trip to Japan for Japanese thrift stores , and hobby stores to pick up figures, gunpla, R/C stuff, and cool electronics, is deff on my bucket list
I’ve been to almost all of these places, and he is right. They are MUST GO places for Gundam enthusiasts.
"Your wallet will suffer" That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
There’s a Gundam exhibition going on right now in Osaka up till end Jan. i’d highly recommend it. Bonus if you have the time to check out the SAO exhibition next door. If you go next week I think you’ll be able to catch the Jojo exhibit!😊
Wow was not expecting a Pretty Derby ad lol
This list is excellent, very good reference for the future My best friend is Japanese and a gundam fan, I feel prepared for any future visit now!
Being a Gundam fan knowing Nakano Broadway is a place to go is even more cooler cause it was used in another franchise I like Digimon.the video game Digimon Cyber Sleuth.
I intend to go there with two Gundam friends in the forseeable future. This video will be out collective ruin, thank you
Holy crap those mobile suit shield backpacks are awesome.
Make sure you hit that ice cream shop in Nakano Broadway's Basement and get that ridiculous soft cream cone that has EVERY flavor they've got on it. Don't puke...
Awesome recommendations. I live out in the inaka of Ibaraki and when I get the rare opportunity to make it into Tokyo my train stop is in Akihabara. I planned out my Christmas break so I could stay in Odaiba and see the Unicorn when I want to at night hopefully uninterrupted.
Tokyo and Akiba get talked about a lot, but on my two trips to Japan (2015 and 2019) I had a lot of fun looking through Den Den Town in Osaka too. Osaka tends to get overlooked, so maybe you could make a video about there?

You can talk about Gundam places in Tokyo and skip the most important one, Kamiigusa. Where the studio Sunrise is and where a Gundam statue greets you at the station exit.
Yamada Denki 7th floor closed? My heart just broke.
You should also visit Kami-Igusa Station in Suginami, where you will find the bronze Gundam statue at the south entrance. Suginami is also the hometown of Sunrise.
Inagi is the only place I haven’t been too…well I have been to Yokohama but we were last there BEFORE the FOO was build. But yea. Great choices
'Overwhelming' is the perfect word to describe this. The only place I've been remotely comparable in America is the Nikaku Animart in San Jose's Japan Town.
Nice information... Just wonderjng, is there any shop you know that sells gundam runner or part?
I wish I could visit some of these stores or they had shops online..
If I ever go to Japan, I’m going to some of the shops you listed in the video. I hope my wallet remains intact afterwards.
iir the Gundam Factory Yokohama is going to close end of March 2023 so go there while you still can.
I know I’ve been to Mandrake, Tamashii, Gundam Factory Yokohama (with the tour), and the Gundam Base (but the Unicorn was covered up and getting maintenance done😢). Unfortunately I don’t think I made it to the rest on your list. Maybe next time? My only issue was the selection at the Gundam Base. While they had a lot of kits, quite a few were out of stock. In any case, I can’t wait until I get to go back to Tokyo.

Okay, so you crush your wallet until it bleeds. How do you get your stuff home? Buy extra suitcases and pay the airline fee, or ship via postal/shipping service?

One common suggestion for kits specifically but still holds for other items is to unpackage. Especially with HG kits and some MGs, there's a heck of a lot of empty space, take the runners out of the box and fold the box flat if you really want to keep it.
For the Gundam bass can I get the neo ziong mobile armor narrative version there?
I visit the Cospa/Gee store in Akihabara store at least once a month for the gundam T-shirts (have 20+ at the moment). I avoid Radio Kaikan unless I need a day one release figure. It's usually too crowded and you've got chinese tourist buying everything in sight. I prefer Nakano for the better deals on used and hard to find items. Its less crowded which lets you take your time without having someone over your shoulder looking at the same thing you are.

I just returned from Japan on 29 Mar 2023, last stop was in Yokohama and made it to the Gundam Dock. The Gundam Exhibit was supposed to close 31 March and is now extended for another year (3.31.24). Go for the Exhibit, but plan to shop elsewhere. The lines are long and the place is usually cleaned out as if locusts descended on a corn crop. They also have stopped giving away the entrance gift model.
I went to Odaiba in 2019 and it was great, unfortunataly i can't buy the MG unicorn perfectability because it is too big (it was slightly smaller than my luggage) and the postal service is very expensive.
Tokyo. Yodabashi camera. And bic camera. Kotobukiya is a sort of Anaheim Electronics. Osaka. Den den town. Kyoto. Naar the train station and the shopping Arcade. Fukuoka. A big shopping Arcade and a Gundam store.

This is a trip that’s on my list. Just need to pull the trigger and set the time aside. The biggest issue for me is the language barrier. Thinking I should either learn some Japanese or find someone who speaks it. Lol. So upset that they did not give US based customers a chance at the Metal Build Strike Noir. Second hand prices are double the list now.
@faboo2001
Жыл бұрын
If you stick with the tourist spots, the language barrier should be pretty minimal. A lot of signage and menus have English and staff will know some to get by or at least have some experience with handling non Japanese speakers. Point is, don't let the language and possibly running into a few awkward moments prevent you from going. Just do it and I'm certain you'll have a great time!
