I met a lovely older lady in a hospital. She had originally been taken there for a few heart symptoms. ER staff declared her to be well, and wish her luck. She fell in the foyer on the way to meet her family after discharge. Broke her hip, and when I met her she'd been in the hospital for nearly four months.

I've been hit by a car twice, I've cracked my skull open falling off a ladder, gotten chased by dogs, had an abscess, developed multiple allergies and lived as an asthmatic in a city with a humidity level of 85% on average for the last 27 years of my life and funnily enough the closest I've been to death was from eating a dirty banana and almost getting killed by the infection lol

My toe looked like the one in Joe Scoot. So I went to see my Dr. VERY quick. Well my Doc freaked. And I listened to the Doc and went to the ER. They checked me in. I had surgery the next day. They cut my toe off. The toe next to my big toe. because I acted fast they didn't have to chase the gangrene up m foot. lemme tell ya what. It hurt really bad for 6 months. Keep an eye on you're feet and toes. I had a visiting nurse 3X a week so ... I wasn't really lonely. They all did a great job so Thanks to Visiting Nurses I got better. Pre Covid... so there's that thing there too.

My mom's former coworker nearly died from what started as a mosquito bite. Somehow it got infected and over the course of a week she got weaker and sick to the point she had to go to the hospital where they discovered she had some infection that had gotten into her bloodstream. They thought it was too late but she managed to pull thru after like a month in the hospital

My great-uncle was shot in the toe in the First World War. It got infected and turned gangrenous, and they had to cut off his foot. Then the infection spread and they had to cut off his leg at the knee. Then at the thigh. Then it spread to the other leg and they had to cut that one off too. He spent the rest of his life in wheelchair in a veteran hospital making children's toys and toilet paper roll cosies.

Over 90% of people die in their own home and out of that percentage 60% die in the kitchen or shower....Now you have a nice day...

My great-grand uncle worked in an explosives factory, and that way long, long before safety was considered important. Accidents were common and the chance to actually survive to retirement was slim. He also was a heavy smoker, which make everyone expect him to die in an explosion sooner or later. He died a day after retiring from lung cancer.

Do you know what anxiety is? This triggers nothing and I have moderate anxiety.

The Goodies was a popular show in Australia and staple viewing for a lot of Aussie kids growing up in the 70s and 80s. The actors actually had ties to the Monty Python cast back before they were Monty Python and the humour in the Goodies is similar although distinctly unique. A lot of the shows would be considered too politically incorrect by today’s standards but it was awesome show back in the day and superbly well written and produced.

My husband got a papercut on his finger while reaching below the car seat to push bar to scoot it forward. Just random paper. He was taking my 4 year old to hospital for a inpatient test for epilepsy. He touched every doorknob and surface there. That was Thursday...by Sunday he was admitted to the hospital, hand twice it's size, red line almost to his armpit, had surgery to run antibiotics directly onto his tendons that night. MRSA. Was hospitalized for a WEEK, port put into his heart for direct Vancomiacin for 7 weeks. No work. In bed. Dangerously weak and sick. True story. How fragile we can be.

Most historians says he suffered a mundane stroke. The story is a myth and most swedish kids know it's just a tale and nothing more. I have a great-aunt who died from popping a pimple. My family refers to it as the 'Pimple of Death'. In the early 1950s the woman had a pimple on the edge of her upper lip, and popped it, without having washed her hands or the pimple itself in advance, and without cleaning the wound afterwards. A few hours later, she became noticeably sick as the pimple wound had become infected, and quickly advanced into blood poisoning. She was taken to the hospital, but because ground zero of the infection was in the danger triangle of the face, the infection reached her brain very quick and killed her. And that is why my mom's side of the family takes pimples very seriously.

There was a king in Roman mythology who did that. He was cursed for disrespecting one of the gods and couldn’t stop eating and eventually ate himself.

I almost died from a stubbed toe. It had a small cut on it and turned into a blood infection that turned into sepsis that turned into bacterial meningitis. Spent over a month at Clark Memorial hospital Dr. Porter in the ER caught it right away. Was diagnosed within 4 hours because I knew the symptoms and managed to keep all my limbs despite them now having major nerve damage. We think the treatment of the crazy strong antibiotics triggered my body to also go haywire and now I also have chronic autoimmune disorders. I still feel completely lucky and blessed because I know I could have died or lost my limbs. I luckily knew the symptoms and sought help right away and my age of 29 also helped because my strain of meningitis although bacterial wasn't as strong because I was older than most cases. So that is my story of almost dying of a stubbed toe!

Glad you made it. Shame about your current condition. I know someone who had a bad back, then heart problems because of the back meds, and a chronic autoimmune condition because of all that medication. They now take 28 tablets a day, plus patches for the skin and all sorts.

Well, this comment will keep me up for weeks. I have 3 very badly deteriorated molars that are abscessed that HAVE to come out. Problem is, I also have VERY severe deterioration in my jaw joints, as in, all cartilage is gone, they're bone-on-bone. I can't open my mouth any wider than to get a (thinly sliced) piece of bread between my teeth. So the teeth HAVE to come out pronto, but they CAN'T get to them, & I can't find anyone who has a clue what to do about the jaw joints. Talk about being up the proverbial creek.

Yep. Once had a patient who died after cardiac surgery- he’d ignored an ingrown toenail until it caused vegetation of one of his valves ( an infection). His post op course was downhill. He was in his 40s. Don’t ignore stuff people.

Omg my daughter had Congenital heart disease and had double valve replacement at 8 months old. People don't get why I get alittle nuts over a cut or illness. She already has to take antibiotics before dental appointments. I agree I may go overboard but endocarditis is just one more thing I worry about with her but atleast I can have some fight against it unlike other stuff

Same thing happened to my wife's grandfather, from ignoring a tooth infection, turned into an abcess, then into blood infection, then dead. I almost lost my big toe from an ingrown toenail infection, they can be pretty bad.

And then there are those millions each year who die because of mosquito bites. ..if that counts..

this is an old post of mine and i just liked it , then saw the icon which i recognized. it's a very small world!

A year and one month ago, I was attacked by my cat (she had a tumor). I am still dealing with two bites that are infected with a very uncommon bacteria. We joke a lot in my family about how I'm going to lose an arm, but I guess now if that happens I can say, "At least I didn't die," and mean it sincerely.

Ray Chapman most likely suffered from a ruptured middle meningial artery, which lies under the thinnest part of our skull bones at the temple. The fast ball most likely fractured the skull at that region and then broke the blood vessel. Blood pooling between the skull and meninges then would put pressure on the brain tissues and damage them.

I once laughed so hard, I couldn’t catch my breathe and I was terrified I’d literally die laughing because I couldn’t breathe. Yet I couldn’t stop laughing because the event was so funny. Luckily I stopped laughing before I passed out 😂

I've got LIA: Laughter Induced Asthma. The one time I mentioned it to a doctor, he told me I was crazy. But if I laugh hard even briefly, it kicks me into an asthma attack. I love to go to comedy clubs but had to quit...at one, the emcee stopped the show & asked me if I needed him to call an ambulance, I was whooping for air so loudly. I figured if I was nearly dying AND interrupting the show, I should probably give comedy clubs a miss from then on.

Bit late to the party, but I must mention Tycho's pet moose that frequently got drunk at parties on his island home. Also, King Adolf's death has kinda been debunked. He did not eat himself to death, but probably died from a stroke that happened shortly after. Although the massive feast probably didn't help...

The Goodies was the funniest show ever, crying, wetting your pants funny, every episode without fail. It was on terrestrial TV in the UK during the '70's. Whether it would stand up to the test of time, I have no idea, but my god they really were so funny.

When you said that king ate himself to death, I thought you meant he actually ate his own self and died from it

Tycho Brahe was extremely strange. In addition to the gold nose after math problem argument situation, he also had either a pet moose or elk (the type of animal differs depending on source) who he would send to parties in his place if he couldn’t go, and this animal died after falling down the stairs because it was drunk....yeah....

It's heartbreaking when you lose the ones you love but when you lose them over unseen circumstances like this it makes it all the more difficult.

As a Swede, I feel weirdly compelled to confirm that we do indeed refer to dear old Adolf Fredrik only really in relation to how he ate too much semlor and died. I could google him, I guess, to figure out more, but at the top of my head, all I would know is that and nothing else. Although to be fair, death by semlor is a fairly noble pursuit. I can think of worse ways to go.

I’d never heard of semlor before. Apparently what you eat now - the pastries filled with cream - is not what they ate back then. But that’s based on 10 minutes of research. 🙂

My great grandmother died via a late-night trip to the bathroom, where she stubbed her toe on a coffee table, and between the raging infection she developed, and her doctors who kept amputating more and more of her, she did not stand a chance.

My favorite case is that of 16-year-old Calvin Coolidge Jr., son of the president in his first term of office in 1924. He got a blister on his foot from playing tennis with his older brother and not wearing socks in his shoes. Three days later the infected blister went into septicemia and he died on the 6th day.

I went to a funeral and they played "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands" *That was a strange funeral*

I can thoroughly confirm that The Goodies was exceedingly funny. It's a long time ago now but I can still remember some of the sketchs from their shows that brought the sort of humour through the telly that indeed induced severe fits of giggles. I am just glad I never dies watching their show.

Often the humour does not age well, and sometimes there's some miserable people alive and breathing who don't laugh that much. Are you from the US? I think that sometimes the cultural aspect doesn't really have the desired effect in people from other cultures.

I hate having anxiety but loving these videos.

I had sepsis. After the antibiotics were started, a small bump that had been on my foot a week before came back and the skin started peeling away from it. It turns out I had some sort of bacterial infection in that bump and even after the inflammation went away, the infection never did and it ended up entering my blood stream. By the time I had ended up going to the hospital, I was feverish and too exhausted to even take my stairs in one go.

Yep, unfortunately thousands if not millions of people die each year by trivial but antibiotic resistant infections. Today they even find multi resistant germs in the environment (like lakes and so on) in europe where no known antiobiotic will work. Before it was thought that multiresistant germs won't stand a chance against their "normal" competitors and therefore must be unable to spread in the environment. Unfortunately that is not the case and they are spreading. It is and will become an increasing serious threat to children, the old and those with battered immune systems. - stop mass delivered antibiotics in livestock farming (where whole populations are treated with massive amounts) - control the clearance in human medicine - lean on specific antibiotic therapies by target checking which germ is responsible for a sickness and avoid broadband antibiotics - stop using desinfection agents in households

Several of them are involved in import/export (though not worth calling organised) and some of them sell antibiotics to peasants so that they can stuff even more animals in a way too small coop. Obviously, it's supposed to be a regulated market, but they operate outside...

Ben Äpfel This started as a joke but correct. Our over use of antibiotics has suped up bacteria. And things like religion tell us that it's more important to believe god will heal you rather than prooven methods.

Same here. Never in my life and then within 2 weeks of a court case I had to hear it 20-30 times.

My great grandad died after cutting his toenails. He missed and started bleeding and his small scratch wouldn’t heal. They had to amputate the toe but that wound wouldn’t heal either. They continued amputating until the entire leg was gone and died.

@@mariusmikalsen03 Yeah, you're over the statute of limitations for medical malpractice and wrongful death. In my state it's 7 years for med mal and 2 for wrongful death, but some are shorter or longer. I don't think any are even over 10 years but I don't know every states law. There is a bit of a loophole in that in some states you have an extra small period of time to file from the time you found out of the cause of action, like a year or two. So even if it happened 50 years ago, if you just found out last week, you could still file. Well, sorry to hear about your great granddad.

there was a lady who was skydiving, got caught in a wind gust and blown up into outer space, passed out from lack of oxygen, & free fell all the way back to earth covered in ice. She survived...

I’m into uk mining history and I’ve read a lot of the death reports from them and although a lot were very horrific, some of the deaths were from small silly injuries. One was an 18 year old lad, cut his thumb and died 6 days later from blood poisoning. Absolutely heartbreaking to read some of the reports tbh

Before the availability of antibiotics, my great-uncle died at age nine from blood poisoning due to a cut acquired in a sledding accident in 1926. The news paper report is heart-breaking. He appeared to be improving giving his family hope for his recovery, but after a week, he succumbed and died in spite of all efforts to save him. My grandfather remembered him as a nice, little boy. My great-grandmother lost another child, an eighteen month-old daughter from some sort of childhood illness. When World War II came along, my grandfather and his only other brother both went to serve. My younger uncle served in the US Army as an MP in England then, in September of 1945, died in a "handgun accident" which could be true in spite of the fact that he was a life-long hunter and had been around guns his whole life, or could simply be a story to cover up that he committed suicide. He was having some sort of disagreement with his mother about a girl that she considered to be unsuitable...who also may have been a cousin of ours from Ireland, possibly my great-grandmother's niece or cousin. We will never know the truth for sure though the Army did not call it suicide, but then they might not to spare the feelings of the family. I do know that my great-grandmother suffered from depression for the rest of her life. She still had four surviving older children, but she lost all three of her youngest children between 1924 and 1945.

@@tessat338 that's an incredibly sad but interesting story, thank you for sharing it. There was certainly a lot of heartbreak for parents back then. I've also seen the story of a 6 year old child who was playing in an old pit railway yard and was trapped in a cart chain, eventually being crushed by the winding mechanism. Also, a story of a young boy maybe 13 getting crushed by a runaway mine cart. Alsorts of horrible stuff, imagine heaving to send your kids down those places. Unbelievable, almost.

@@stemartin6671 My great-grandmother was also terribly ashamed that her second-oldest daughter had (whisper) epilepsy! Then phenobarbital became widely available in the 1920s. My great-aunt started taking it and had the temerity to begin to live a normal life. My great-grandmother was miffed that Aunt Helen was kicking up her heels and going to dances ( it WAS the 1920s) then actually got a job, moved away, married and had children instead of living quietly at home with her shameful condition. Aunt Helen lived to be 96, bless her and was a great favorite with the whole family. When my grandfather died at age 83, he had three older sisters living. Aunt Helen was the last survivor of all her six siblings.

They bend forward from the waist to someone as part of a greeting, especially to people they hope to impress, such as a potential employer, and how deeply a person bows is governed by the status of the person one bows to. Evidently, the man practicing his polite bow did it too crisply when the time came, and caused an aneurysm.

My mom was British and we used to love the Goodies we watched it when we were very young on PBS in NY. I don’t remember laughing that hard - but we did enjoy it ...

Just so we are clear, a Semla is not just bread dipped in milk. It is bread with whipped cream and almond mass 😁The bread is ofther made with cardamom! Though many people like to dipp it in milk! We call it Hetvägg which roughly translates to Hot wall xD

My younger brother drowned but was revived at age 3. Later, hee was speared through the cheek (hr now has one dimple lol), hit by a car going 40 mph... then he went on to become a Ranger and badly tore his rotator cuff jumping out of a plane and broke a femur in multiple places during training then KEPT RUNNING on it! That kid is indestructible. I think he may have made a deal with the devil as a toddler.

My brother revived at age 6 after hyper-ventilating, he got stabbed to death but only has some scars, got hit by his own wheel chair in the hospital at 2mph, he became a mountain climber but broke his arm when he fell down the stairs on the Everest. Some people are really lucky

My friend almost died during softball years back. Her dad was the coach and batting and it hit her head. She still had metal in there from surgery to save her life to this day. And she is at college on a softball scholarship!

In Denmark we actually have a term called "Thycho Brahe dag" (Thycho Brahe day). This term is used to refer to a day that has just been filled with bad luck from start to end..

They had alcohol & some cultures knew how to use it as a disinfectant. Some cultures and civilizations understood hygene too.

The peacock story reminds me of an incident in my own family. I have an ancestor who was kicked in the knee by a horse, which is a bad injury, but from what I understand, it caused a blood clot that eventually stopped his heart.

A few weird deaths which springs to mind (sorry, I remember stories but I'm not so good with names): -The greek play-write who died when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his bald head, apparently thinking it was a rock. -Some medieval (viking?) conquerer who beheaded his foe and strapped the head to his horse. The teeth from the head scraped against his leg as he rode and led to an infection which killed him (I think this might be related to blue-tooth, but I'm not sure). -The inventor who, amongst other things, invented both leaded petrol and CFCs, died when he was strangled by a contraption he had designed to help him get out of bed. -Francis Bacon, who tried to prove food could be preserved by freezing, by placing a chicken in the snow. In doing so, he caught a cold which, through complications, led to his death. BTW - the being remembered for how you die thing? Just think of David Carradine...

When I'm watching an NFL game, occasionally I'll wonder what happens if a player is accidentally killed or fatally injured on the field. Looks like Chapman's death was ruled an accident and no charges were brought on Mays, but that was also 100 years ago.

A few months ago i actually bit the bottom of my tongue, close to the back! I’ve tired to get that part of my tongue to touch my teeth, but it just doesn’t reach!? Wtf?

Grew up on The Goodies, was a very funny UK show.

I think a LOT of people literally do "Die Laughing" look at how many BBQ's Grandpa was having a good 'ole time and then grabs his chest? 😂😭😭😵

Another one for ya: the composer Alexander Scriabin died in 1915 after clipping his nose hairs with scissors. The inside of his nose got infected and he died a few days later when it went to his brain.

Awww "The Goodies" one is so sweet! (Something I was not expecting to write in response to a KZread video about deaths.)

My grandfather was a doctor and he would always tell me about a guy who died from sepsis that had originated from an infected hangnail.
