Thank you for the tips. I could not find the 10x loupe via the links to your shop nor on your Amazon page. Please could you link to that? I have been trying to find a nice large one like that for fieldwork, mostly just find those with a crazy small diameter. Thank you so much.

One thing I use is a bit of bicycle inner tube. Great fire lighters. Light and waterproof

The shot, from the shotshell, can be wrapped in a small square of material for use as an improvised fishing sinker.

Indeed. He also makes the comment that you should use a respirator if you melt it down. While always prudent, this is a bit of overkill, and something that should not dissuade you from doing so in a survival situation. The amount of airborne lead that you could inhale, in an outdoor situation, over a fire (where you aren’t likely to have your face anyway) is minutely small. Ask any plumber who’s been sweating pipes with lead-based solder for 30 years; it’s not really a thing. Also while not great for anyone, lead poisoning is really a serious problem for children in developmental years, not adults. Lastly, you’d need to make sure any mask had the correct cartridges for fumes. Most dust masks and particle respirators aren’t going to do much for toxic fumes. Also be sure to see if it is lead shot! Many shotgun shells use steel shot now. And, commonly, “lead” shot and bullets are not pure lead anyway. They use an alloy (mostly lead). Not saying this would have anything to do with melting them for fishing weights. Just saying.

@@JohnSmith-gs4lw I’m a journeyman in the union. The only time I see a risk is if we are removing lead paint from old drywall. It can be very painful. And have some seriously negative effects on the body. But from birdshot? I don’t see it.

I LOVE your Channel... I'm a former Montana Hunting and survival guide. I've a suggestion for some videos. Going old school is GREAT! But, may I suggest you advise your viewers to ALWAYS carry a disposable lighter in case they can't get a fire started (old school way). I ALWAYS carried a lighter in my pants pocket, my shirt pocket my coat pocket and in my back pack. Once the decision is made to stop for the night FIRST and ALWAYS get a fire going, then gather wood, then gather some more. Accidents happen (an ax cut to the shin, a twisted ankle, a fall and concussion, etc. With a fire ALREADY going and wood gathered can literately be a "life saver"! In cold weather ALWAYS have a wool stocking cap (stops heat loss through the head). But, MOST important, a cell phone with power back-up with the ability to sent real time GPS location. Please post more. I'm so happy to watch

"Staple"!?

I can make good black powder for firework. Now I have a new idea for starting fire when camping with my friends :D

Old tobacco tins are great for keeping things in like fire lighting gear, and zip lock bag are good for keeping a spool of line and other fishing bits and bobs like hooks, weights and small rubber lures as you can use both in the sea and rivers and ponds for trout, salmon, perch and pike and most sea fish will take them.

Top tips yet again Mike! Great to see you back pal. I've never seen inside a shotgun slug. Very interesting to know that all of that shell could be used for something. A decent sized magnifying glass that too, also a great way to use it to get a closer look at wild edibles. I've not seen the needle for a compass idea before either. It certainly dovetails well with some of the "survival shotgun" material you can find on the web and on KZread.

Good stuff! I would suggest a BIC or Cricket lighter and "soaked" cotton balls wrapped in a baggie in your pants pocket AT ALL TIMES! This is not 1822! Carry a tube of any combustible ointment. It can be rubbed on trash or leaves to make fire. Use it for small wounds, rust prevention, chaffing, chapped lips, bites, stings, lubricant, etc. Play with and learn flint and steel, friction embers for sure!!! Use a LIGHTER! Am I going to carry a half-mask respirator with cartridges in the wild to not breath in the smoke from lead? - Nope. We can't get people to wear safety glasses in the wild to prevent eye injuries! Especially at night! They'll wear $200 sunglasses while walking in the concrete jungle but won't wear $10 clear safety glasses while brush hopping, chopping, dodging fire embers, grease spatters, and gnats!

One of my favourite tinders I use is the fluffy lint from my electric drier. I separate it into fist size pieces (squashed up in my fist), then massage vaseline into the fluff. I then place these into small plastic coin bags. You can get quite a few into a small space as they compress really well. I can light fires in most places and conditions.

Doing my historical camps I would collect dried cat tail heads I would then dip them into wax and built a reasonable coating I would keep several in my kit and use them for candles but mainly after the first burn they make excellent char for flint and steel. I can start the tinder with the coal on the cat tail head like char cloth I usually leave a bit of the stem on the end of the head Can be used as a handle or can be stuck in the ground as a candle or use the entire head to get tinder started

Do you buy prepackaged food? Do you throw your garbage into the landfill? Do you have a plastic toothbrush? Do you buy bottled water? Do you wear shoes? Have you ever used a can of hairspray or spray paint or WD-40? Do you live in a house that was made out of building materials? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, which it IS… Then don’t make yourself out to be some patron saint with a green recycling logo on his forehead. This is a really brief snippet of a non-exhaustive list…and let me also add, None of these things are extreme and yet they all pollute barring none. So when you say - “I liked that he don’t pollute.” You are making an assumption that’s entirely fallacious. Show me ONE person that isn’t polluting… And I’ll show you a person that doesn’t even exist. So for the sake of your argument that - “burning plastic may be necessary in extreme circumstances but no need to do it for the sake of it.” In what kind of circumstance are we talking about where you would necessitate it being an extreme circumstance worthy of burning plastic? Riddle me that Batman. And why would that be any different from every day normal circumstances - whether you’re eking out your existence while roughing it in the woods, or living in a third world country, or making a video as some KZread influencer practicing survival skills? Do you know what happens to a shotgun shell when you’re done with it? It’s thrown away. “Away” has both a name and a place. What do you think happens when you recycle a plastic water bottle for instance? Does it get melted back into water bottles over and over again ad infinitum? Absolutely not. The number of uses that that plastic water bottle is good for exponentially deteriorates every time the polymers get heated back up. Every time it goes through a recycling plant, more plastic polymers are added to it in order to get it to bind together and therefore more virgin plastics go into it. Did you know those virgin plastics largely get dumped into the ocean in the form of “nurdles” which chokes out the sealife and kills sea creatures, all for the sake that we can generate more plastic product? It might be helpful for you to understand the “green agenda” which is quite superficial in and of itself. When the world’s industries produced upwards of 250 million metric tons of polymers in 2016, its rather telling when only 9% got recycled. Do you think much has changed since then? And therefore with this in mind, one must consider the fact that the plastic water bottle has to turn into something more dense like playground equipment or plastic lumber until it’s finally thrown away into the landfill - where it gets BURNED. In other words, it’s only temporarily diverted from the landfills. This is the same with all plastic items. And you’re worried about burning plastic in order to get a fire started…. just because you’re caught up in this idea that your Greta Thunberg trying to save the planet? You’re straining at a gnat while swallowing a camel. You can’t save this planet. It’s going to be destroyed in the same way that it was created - in the hands of God. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be a good steward of it…. But you’re setting standards for yourself that are so low bar while expecting everyone else to be anal retentive and high bar in their own standards. That’s called hypocrisy. So get over yourself, go ahead and shave down one of these shotgun shells… And you can certainly use it as a flame extender without being so caught up in the minutia that you can’t even keep consistently. You’re welcome.

I can honestly say that I don't use plastics where I can avoid, (which is a lot when you try) I have recently quit flying Jumbos and moved to a sustainable house that I can heat with wood and manual labour. I drive an electric car, but I still intend to buy a diesel motorhome. I scuba dive and take part in surveys and I see the damage to our planet up close. I intend to install solar and reduce my footprint as much as possible whilst still enjoying all that life can offer. In short. I disagree with you at almost every level. I keep a shotgun shell in my belt pouch for emergencies. If you have a buckshot shell, you can use the buckshot as ammunition for a slingshot. I use the powder, and the primer to start a fire.

Glad to see you back in action bud! I think if you play with that jute twine with the metal tube some more you will like it more n more. Instead of laying the twine on the ground try different grip techniques whereas your strong hand is holding the knife and the tube. weak hand holding the fire steel. align the end of the twine to be directly in the path of the sparks. Takes a little practice to find a comfortable and safe grip but once you've got it the twine will take that spark very quickly. Uberleben makes a fine piece of kit that burns very well. Keep up the great work!

my favourite tinder: charcoaled rope. best results with woven - not twisted - rope. also, fresh rope soaked in wax is a great firestarter once you get a flame.

Another tip to do with candles but warning you have to be careful if you make the wick bigger you will get a bigger flame had no power for a few months and had to cook with candles so basically you can use anything like a sponge as long as it's above the wax anything less chemical the better so you don't breath it in and be careful because the wax will splash at boiling point and smokes the place out when you put it out inside lurnd that the hard way heads up my spelling sucks miss spelled a word lol

For your wood oven. You could keep it simple and bake some bread in the oven, Or you could go fancy. The fish would taste great in a pie with a creamy lemon sauce filling.... .... Or even just a pie.

Learn local plants and trees around you. Find out about their uses for both Bushcraft and medicinal/edible. Once you open your eyes to the natural world the Bushcraft type stuff will soon follow. Plenty of “crafting” stuff you can do with sticks/trees etc too. Also, check out my survival skills playlist on my KZread channel which is packed full of tips

I’ll bet the oils in your skin would gradually soak into that cotton ball fingertip method, which would probably help in fire-starting also. You’d just have to be careful about not soaking them with sweat I suppose. Great idea!

I just wanna ask how you deal with all those knives and axes on you out in wilderness, when its so strict and illegal in uk? i wanna be able to go out and enjoy my outdoors peace out of city chaos, instead I got anxiety and chaos out in wilderness and mostly on way there, beacause of all that strict nonsense,,, do you have some special certification for you to use all those locked bushcraft blades, cos you do bushcraft on different level, or whats the best way to do it here in UK? Interesting that you use wax to treat your leather gloves. We used to treat our gloves (and boots) with mink oil at home. Slather them up with the oil, then put them in the oven on the lowest setting for about 30 minutes. Worked a charm. You could go wading in those boots and never get your feet wet.

quick question where'd you get your compass and how effective is it because i need a good compass and i don't really trust what maufacturers say

It’s a Silva compass. Arguably the most reputable company for good quality compasses. You can find them online easily enough.

When I was in the military we would pull off the heads of our 5.56mm rounds and pour the gun powder over our kindling. Mind you, this was only used as a last resort.

How DO you remove splinters with a needle? :o

I use it to pull the skin surrounding the splinter to break it back so that I can get to the splinter without it snapping.

Why not use the spine of the knife to magnetize the needle? Save the blade.

A device you may want to have a think on... Dixie Gun Works calls it a tinderlighter (item MI0752 on their website) they arent hard to build in all honesty but would be a safer method of igniting powder, either smokeless or black powder. Another tinder source to keep in a tin would be a black powder infused piece of cotton. Not hard to do such a thing, ive done it for years. Honestly home made black powder works well if commercial made isn't an option. Lay you cotton down, cover it with black powder, the. Saturate in either rubbing alcohol or water, once the grains of the powder start to dissolve into a cookie, you've got enough wet down. Let it dry. 2 or 3 hrs in sun light usually does it. Beware, it burns very hot and fairly quick. You'll want it on your birds nest, or close to your tinder. This won't ember, but it usually ignites wet tinder at least here in the states. Ive started several fires with ice covered tinder with this more then once. Best used with a fire steel (fero rod).

Vaseline in your gloves doesnt sound so bad. Would leather gloves absorb vaseline? Also, theres such a thing as waxed twine. Ill bet it makes a good fire starter.
