10, OUT OF 10: We rate our entire board game collection! (Part 1)

Welcome to our new series, 10 (COMMA!) OUT OF TEN, where we rate 10 games on a 10 point scale from our two unique perspectives. We hope this helps you get a better sense for our game preferences, and remember.....
1) ratings are subjective, based on our own individual enjoyment of the game, they're not a judgment on game quality or the likelihood you would feel the same,
2) our game preferences are ever evolving and these may change,
3) we respect and would love to hear your differences of ratings in the comments... that's what makes gaming so fascinating and full of joy. There is something for everyone! 💜
Thanks for watching, and can't wait to hear what you think!

Thanks for stopping by! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

I loved this video. Watching (or listening because I'm at work) you two talk about games for an hour is relaxing, entertaining, and... comforting if that makes any sense. I just want to see you go through as much of your collection as you're willing to do. Maybe you can "theme" some episodes or something but either way I'll be watching all of them.

I love everything about this series already and I'm glad I waited until I could start watching these in full! I have so much to say but I'll try to limit it... Spot on about Mercado de Lisboa missing the Pasteis de Nata and other pastries, Lacerda should know better! I also totally agree about the game. I wanted to like it a lot more but it just felt dry and too mathy (compare a few options each turn to see where you get the most points). Even though I was a bit surprised to see A Feast for Odin not get a 10, I really appreciate the nuance of the discussion and why you didn't give it a 10. Maggie - your comments about "chasing the perfect 10" really resonated with me and this sort of ties into the whole series idea in general... I love that you're going back and looking at all these games, both for yourselves but also for your viewers. We're guilty of getting caught up in the hotness too, it's the nature of board games on KZread, and we truly do enjoy trying new games and seeing what's out there (how else will you find that perfect 10?), but there's also something really satisfying about revisiting your old favourites, or suddenly finding a new appreciation for a game you previously didn't care much for, or whatever the case may be. I think it's telling that even though you're not just covering the hotness in this series, people are loving it, and rightfully so. I could listen to you two talk about games all day, which brings me to the next point... I think you said this in part 2 (which I started watching but haven't finished yet), but I agree with everyone who said they enjoy the length of these videos. We struggle with this sometimes too because our videos often run longer than we plan, and there's all this stuff about ideal lengths for KZread videos and whatnot, but for those of us who want to watch every second, why deprive us when there are time stamps? If you were rambling or repeating yourselves a lot it would be different, but you're both excellent on camera and it's clear that you don't lose steam even for an hour-long video. Not only do you describe the games well, but you do a great job distinguishing between what does/doesn't work for YOU (subjectively) and what you think is an actual game flaw (objectively). Plus, the Thinker/Themer dynamic is always present and engaging. Keep doing your thing. Anyway, I'll probably have a few more novels in the comments throughout the series so I'll leave it at that. Really looking forward to the rest of these when I have the time! - Carlo

I appreciate the long talks about each game since as you said there's a lot of complexity behind every game besides just a number. Also, thank you a ton for adding a pinch of B-roll of each game so we can see some key components / set pieces of what makes the game special.

Great video. Looking forward to the rest of the series! From my personal perspective, I really value the logging of ranking of games on bgg, my preference would be to go for your highest rating and then capture both in the comments (maybe with a youtube link :), because I would much rather know one of you loves the game and it standing out for that reason, than a washed out average if one of you loved it and the other was meh. But welcome whatever you choose :) Thanks for the content... Keep up the good work!

Finally got around to watching this one, as yall put up part 2 lol. But I really love the in depth thoughts and how much purpose this list has for y'all. While I enjoy top 10s generally, I think the really special and valuable ones are when you feel the enthusiasm and solid criticisms on why a game hits y'all in a particular and personal way. Which I feel it in spades here. I also really like how multi purpose it is, in terms of helping you cull, get ratings out there, and filling up the BGG list. I hope yall find your 10 soon. I'm always on the look out for mine, and the closest possible games to the rating is Brass Birmingham and/or Spirit Island for me personally.

Hello Amy and Maggie, its a while since I have watched any of your videos, indeed any boardgame videos in general, since my collection has reached saturation. I really enjoyed this Part 1 of your new series though and look forward to more. I am always amazed how much you can talk about each game, the pics and detail of the mechanics and theme (or lack of theme) you pack in, even of those that are leaving your collection. Boon Lake is a firm favourite of one our local game group members - we have a large game group locally (100+ members) we have recently joined. I was surprised how low you rated Ark Nova, however, its very immersive and thinky, we love it. I know its very long and if you finish on negative victory points after all your efforts that feels a tad mean but it is sooo good! On your scoring I would put it probably put it at a 9.0. Paul

This is a great series!! I'm so glad that you've started this. It also helps my wallet to not have so many Crowdfunding videos🤣 I feel like there is so much to unpack with this video, but the best thing is to solidify your tastes in games so all future reviews can be better understood and applied to my tastes. I'll start with an IAQ IAQ: I know you're not great at culling, but when you do sell something, what is the best method for you to pass on your games? Here in Finland, I struggle a bit because the international shipping from here is so expensive that people aren't going to want to pay for that if, for instance, they are in central Europe. There is a board game flea market on Facebook, but two days after posting what you have for sale, it's slipped down from the top, so only people who want to scroll and scroll are going to find it. Right now I'm excited to have my games up in the Essen no-shipping auction because I will be able to get rid of a good amount of my games, but sadly it is only once a year. On with my review of your reviews😂 I won't bother going through each game, just the ones that I disagree with. The first one was Brian Boru. I was really excited to get it to the table, but then when we finished the game, we all looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders. The way you described Boonlake as a bit of a grind is how I felt about Brian Boru. The decisions never really felt terribly exciting for me. Kitchen Rush, while I can see how it would be an amusing real time coop game, looks horrible for me, BUT that is because I have been in the service industry for over 20 years and the LAST thing that I'd want to do in my free time is feel the stress of working in a restaurant. Of course this is an incredibly personal bias, but that game would be a 1 out of 10 for me😆 With Scythe, like Maggie, I was expecting something different and was happy to discover what it really was. I played through the Rise of Fenris campaign with friends and really loved it, but now feel absolutely no need to return to that game. It was as though the campaign was so good that the base game would feel flat in comparison. Have you played the campaign? I'll try to be as gentle as I can with your favourite game A Feast for Odin. I only played it once recently on a copy from the library and was happy to finally get a chance to play it. I thought it was pretty good, but the theme and the randomness of placing the tiles on your board to cover negative points felt off to me. It was an interesting puzzle, but there's such a disconnect with how the theme that, while I'd play it again, it wouldn't be a game that I seek out. Ark Nova on the other hand - that is a game that I really enjoy! I'm not a huge fan of zoos in general, but I really appreciated that they've added a conservation aspect to the game. I can appreciate your view on multiplayer solitaire and all heads are down on your own board, but I feel that the puzzle of my own board is so meaty that I'm fine with the solitaire feeling. At the end of the game I love seeing my zoo and all the effort I've put into building it.

It’s really helpful to get a vin diagram of my tastes vs. a reviewers. The more you rate the more clearly I know where our likes crossover. Thank you ladies for taking the time to do this. I am also curious how many times you have a played a game. I have only played my favorite game Scythe 7 times. Between owning a real estate company, 3 kids, a husband, and a lot of movies I have to watch, I don’t get to play as much as I would like. I am always curious how much others get to play.

I think this is a great way to look at older games and refresh your perspective on past games that haven't seen the table in a while! If I could make a suggestion on the BGG ratings, because they are a free account I wonder if you could create individual accounts linked to your Thinker Themer account? This would create clarity and be more searchable for those who want to look at your individual feelings towards different games, plus it would probably be faster for you than having to write out both scores somewhere on the comments section and provide you with the comments if you wanted to clarify your feelings on the game:) Enjoying the content!

Really interesting video! Interesting particularly to hear your thoughts on Ark Nova. Personally, I really love it. It’s a key part of the fun and challenge of the game to me that because of the large card deck you can’t go in with a pre-conceived strategy; you have to react to the cards that do appear. If a player is hoping that a particular card will come out then they probably aren’t playing very efficiently. Looking forward to other videos in this series!

Looking forward to this, I definitely came for the ratings but I'm staying to find out if you'll post the games you're selling to Sydney :P But seriously I think this will be so helpful to figure out where tastes align and where they differ. So Very Wrong About Games is maybe my favourite board game podcast but I disagree with them 90% of the time, but going in knowing that just allows a more rounded impression of a game and whether it's for me, and I hope knowing what you like will do the same here.

Love this! You both always have such interested and articulate opinions, so much fun to hear you go through these games. My main question: how exactly are you coming up with your super granular decimal ratings? with scores like 6.6 and 7.8, you're essentially working on a 100 point scale--what was the thought on that versus a 10 point (or 20 point, with .5's) scale?

I'm sure this is a lot of work for you. Just like in a board game, what REALLY matters is if the experience is WORTH the time invested. On my part? ABSOLUTELY! This was quality start to finish and I learned a lot. The more you can pour into your reasons a game elevates or does not is such high value, especially to someone who doesn't and can't have 1000 games!

Love this video! Off to watch part 2 right now... Question about your A Feast For Odin rating: Is the 9.5 for AFFO+ Norwegians? Or does Norwegians make it closer to a 10? I suspect the former.... but then what is your rating for AFFO base game only?

Great series! I've been bingeing your channel out of order over the last few days. From this list, I think I'd like to try Dice Miner and A Feast for Odin. While I'm not keen on the themes of whaling and pillaging, I don't think I'll mind them as smaller parts of such a thematic game - but designing zoos and enclosing animals in them is a theme that makes me uncomfortable, so I'll probably skip Ark Nova.

Maggie, you mentioned that when playing Ark Nova you feel no investment in what the other player is doing in the game. The more I play Ark Nova, the more I actually disagree with that sentiment. Figuring out what your opponent may plan to do, I feel, can make a noticeable difference in the direction of your play. For example, if you can predict that they will be playing many cards with a certain tag, playing a sponsor card that allows you a benefit every time that tag is added to any zoo can be a great boon that allows you to play more efficiently. Also, with the drafting of the completely unique cards and the tokens on the association board, there’s a subtle competition to every space in the game that I think is perfect. Since the tempo of the game, from triggering breaks to ending the game, is completely player-driven I find it’s a compelling multiplayer experience. Anyway, I am excited to watch this series! After years of listening to various reviewers sing the praises of AFFO I think you both have finally just convinced that I would enjoy it and ought to play :)

This all makes perfect sense but Maggie hardly ever watches what other players are doing. I (Amy here) often have to say "hey hey watch this" lol. So any game that requires a careful assessment of another player's strategy is going to be much harder for Maggie to win (whereas I'm watching like a hawk... 👀 maybe it's all of the chess growing up...). Thanks for sharing these thoughts and for watching! ☺️

Great new show... and a nice way to make a clean slate in the collection. For me, on this particular list, I haven't played a lot of the games, but omg I do love Ark Nova. I was quite apprehensive at first, due to the look and feel of the game. Same with terraforming Mars. It took me a long time before I dared to play the game, but in the end I loved it so much. So with that in mind I decided to purchase this game much faster. And it hasn't given me any regret. Best game of the year (so far), and already in my Top 10 of all time. And house-ruling is quite easy. We've already used a drafting system for the first 8 (4) cards in hand. And the new solonmode online vs an AI player is great a different from the standard solo version in the game. Love it as a solo game. For the next series I am interested in the King is Dead, as I see it continually on screen in the back ;-) I know I like it a lot, but interested in your take...

Great video. I loved hearing your thoughts on these! Regarding Scythe, have you played with more than two players? I find that the player interaction is much more intense and "war-like" with four+ players, especially since two of the stars can be obtained from winning a battle.

  • @FemmeSensei

Good question, and I think you're right...there's player interaction but it's war-like player interaction. To me, I love player interaction of a less "take from you" perspective. Scythe is good though.

Yes actually we've probably mostly played Scythe at four players. Agree about the battle stars, that's often the only reason I (Amy here) choose to engage. Thanks for watching!

A new subcriber to your channel here and I must say that I love your content. I tend to fall more on Maggie's side of the fence based on what I have seen thus far and am curious as to whether she played Boonlake solo? If so, did that change her opinion of the game at all? I have it here and would be playing it exclusively as a solo experience. Thank you so much for the video and I am very much looking forward to more from you two!

Awesome video! We also love Feast for Odin, and also find the occupation cards to be not the best part. We now have a house rule of "draw 2, choose 1" that has improved them quite a bit. 🙂 We have the Norwegians expansion on a hold shelf at Game Nerdz - looking forward to playing it!

The format reminded me quite a bit of the Keep or Cull videos on the Board Gaming Ramblings channel- which I love, but I do agree this could have been a bit more condensed. After just a couple minutes of discussion/game, I was skipping ahead to the ratings.

Haha, hi Amy and Maggie. Love the sound of this series. Before I even watch further and as one of the unnamed "people in the comments" I need to ask (IAQ): As you are always getting many, many new games, does that mean we will never see a top 10 BG's of all time? I.e. is this a clever way to go around this burning question? Anyway, can't wait to watch the rest (during work) and maybe comment again

Love your 10 of 10 series :) Have you ever played Scythe with the Fenris exp.? It brings so much more dynamic to the game and its changing a bit of your points of critic that you play a bit too solo... Ark Nova got the same opinion as you. Played it two times with four people and never will do that again... this was such a lonely game experience. With 2-3 players its always a great experience for me :)

What a great series to follow! Real opinions on a whole host of games. I assume you are playing/rating these games as two players or solo. Could you add also how well they play at the 1-2 player count? does the game need more players? (you mention Fest for Odin needs the expansion for lower player count).
