Hey! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Join our discussion of these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.
Are you #teamthinker or #teamthemer? ❤🏳️🌈🇦🇺

Is this the Deluxe version of Scythe ?
Thanks for the eating tips. Went to Melbourne this past weekend and tried AND loved the two restaurants you recommended on Swanston: Biang Biang and Dragon Hot Pot. Delicious!!
Suuuuper late to this party, but had to stop and say I'd play the heck out of Survivor the board game!!!!!
By your powers combined you have the best solo review video
I can't see any other comments like this. If it were me, if I made board game videos, I would only hold up the lid of the box. I wouldn't be picking up the entire box and shifting all of the contents every time
One of the pieces of revolution that hit the board game industry in the last decade has been making games that have a set end time. Like Monopoly and risk have a near unlimited end state depending on the people and luck of the table, but with something like the Stardew Valley game I kind of want them to unlearn that. Or learn it differently
So glad you covered Lorenzo! I've always been on the fence due to lack of theme, but your review convinced me to get it, tension 😀!!!
I still have Lorenzo in shirk, I need to fix that. The FF games looks and sounds so good. I may need to look into that more, also really want Fast Sloths but it's harder to get now and didn't have budget at time. I can live with playing at cons or other peoples copies, truth is I do not have a lot of people close in my game group who enjoy the FF games the way I do.
I got my bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education and I desperately want to play this game. I left teaching and now all my friends don't want to play this game because either the theme is too real for them or the game is too complex. I'm really hoping I can find a board game group that does heavier games.
Updates: - We were playing the market action incorrectly as it doesn't negate your worker action! This will make it a little less tight by opening up more actions. - We are discussing with Dave Beck changes to iconography to assist with making things easier at a glance, stay tuned 😊
I'm ecstatic for this
Although I ❤ the theme, I feel this might be a little too heavy for me… At least there is Philharmonix, with a similar type of theme - which would be easier to get played!
26:28 I feel I like automas that mimick the actions of human players - regardless of how difficult they are to maintain.
I wish you could do a gameplay. Cheers.
Would you ever play at 2, or not ever?
Same question here!
At first glance. The board looks a lot like rococo to me. Am I right?
I love tarot and board games! Finally they combined my 2 passions in 1! I must have it! Love the video! 😍
Wow this game looks beautiful and such a great idea for a theme! Big fan of Distilled as well. I realllly need to get ahold of this one.
Paverson Games were really good about diversity in Distilled. Like, the best out there really. However, I think that since they are going all out on historical accuracy here (including bios) and that it's based in Europe, diversity in this case is more about showcasing women and children who were working with their families unlike what we were brought up to believe (that women did nothing or weren't involved). I'm so glad it's not just another game with a bunch of dudes! Or the diversity will probably also come from different historical families from different religious backgrounds and countries which we don't usually associate with that era. But yes, if there were any POC back in Europe that were making instruments, those absolutely need to be included.
I think this is a fair assessment. Distilled (in addition to being a solid game) did a great job with being diverse. I echo your point that in bringing on the musicologist to make sure everything is historically accurate, and by the nature of the setting of the final version of the game, Paverson Games is striking the best balance possible to honor the theme and be as diverse as possible.
Thank you for the long in-depth video. Game looks beautiful, and very interesting.
This looks absolutely stunning, and the theme is about as appealing as it gets for me. I worry about the blind bidding though. It’s not a mechanic that I’ve ever particularly enjoyed.
Thanks for the great review! I appreciate how honest, thorough, and clear you were in both explaining the game and sharing your opinions.
I'm excited for this one. Love the theme. Thank you for the awesome preview!
I like automa that is dumb and OP. Then they can challenge you without needing much management
I don’t mind the management. But I want to feel like I am playing against an at-least competent player…
Beautiful game! Super cool theme too. Thanks for showing us common folk about it :)
bidding reminds me of the Francis Drake game
Fractured Sky also has the mechanisms, too.
Thank you both for this review! I loved Distilled and this look like it combines many other elements I enjoy. Thanks for the KS link too!
Great video! Hope you guys are able to do one on Arcs now that the final version has been released.
Didn’t they have this type of video for Arcs when it was on crowdfunding? Update: Just looked - Yes, they did a similarly formatted video for Arcs, so you can go check that out! This game hasn’t even been on crowdfunding yet - so I feel that is when they do these type of videos.
@@JJ_TheGreat they did do a similar video for Arcs but that was a fairly early prototype. The final version has shipped out and I'd imagine they were sent a full review copy given their prior video but we'll see!
Trickerion vibes
Totally agree, looks like a lit if setting up to pull off big turns
Playtesting this one on Friday, can't wait!! As I've said before: as a clasically-trained composer, this is an auto-back/buy for me, as with any music-themed game. #GottaCatchEmAll
looks beautiful
1st
Last! 😉
Sounds great! I kept hearing “Noah” Role, until I read “Knower” Role in the Chapters, which makes much more sense 😅
Yep that's a Knizia game if I ever seen one.
How does it compare to other Knizia tile layers for you (if you are fans)? Would you rather play Rebirth, Cascadero, or Through the Desert?
I'd love to try Fairy as a warm-up with my students! Sky Towers seems like the kind of game I would play with friends or at family gatherings with my cousins; it reminds me of when we'd sit around playing 31 with a deck of cards
How is this the first time I've heard of Rebel Princess! Pre-ordered the deluxe version coming in August at a great price on GameNerdz. Thank you for this great video!
Finally picked up Sleeping Gods Distant Skies (and an expansion) for $50! What a bargain! I ended up also getting a copy of Hoplomachus Victorum the other week which I didn't think I would like but it's a really compelling design and it really makes my brain super happy.
Played this at Bordercon just last week in Albury-Wodonga after being blown away by Glory to Rome the year before, my partner and I LOVED this (also Aegean Sea, which is equally chaotic but a little harder to get your head around). We also played Red 7 by the same designer, which was really neat and surprising also. Do you fine folks attend cons in Australia? There is a cool LGBTQIA+ con in Albury-Wodonga called HuMM BuGG Con that we are travelling from Adelaide to hit up next year, They had the most amazing pride pins that we purchased because they were exceptional.
Ordered Sky Towers (and a few other things from their website) - looks like a fun game!
Saludos desde Perú vine para ver el juego sky towers
We discovered all these Japanese darling card games as well and are obsessed! Thank you for covering more card games!
I dream of making a video for this game myself. You did a little of what I want to do, in that you framed the story a bit at the start. I am not a good salesman and couldn't sell the experience to my friend to play, so I would like (to make) a video that expresses the game's theme and goals a bit more concretely. Because if you haven't played the videogame, the elements of the game might not stand out. And if you HAVE played the videogame, you might not appreciate that we're under a time pressure against Joja! As you point out, the game is time pressured and your extended campaign fixes that to put it more in line with the videogame feel. The rules as they're given is more in line with speedrunners of the videogame, or more specifically, challenge runners who try to complete the community centre in year one. So to make the story make sense for the board game I'd add that Joja is set to turn the community centre into a warehouse at the end of one year if it isn't fully restored! I appreciate your take on an extended campaign. I've read various attempts and thought about my own. I too like to play the Stardew Valley music while playing, to match each season.
I absolutely LOVE small box/card games. Would love to see more recommendations like this. 🥰
Please do this series every year! I just made my Tokyo hunting list much longer >.<
would love if it you told where these games could be bought.
Great video, thanks a lot!
Thank you so much. What a fantastic review! You didn't miss anything... except the solo rules on BGG, but that is not in the box. To celebrate how much you like it, first time customers can get 30% off the game from the publisher's website.
Thanks, I'll do that :)
Oops. I ordered before seeing this comment. Look forward to playing the game.
@@EggoGF Let us know next time you order, and I will try to make it up to you.
Fairy looks wonderful, and the art is 👌🏻 Can’t wait to check out this whole affordable series of games by allplay. 😁
Oooo, I would love if Allplay makes a whole line of games in this cute box size. Tiny games are the best!
This is going to be the next boom in games, I think. Games for EVERYONE.
@@ex1stgames It has to be, it's the only way to keep growing. Many of us often forget that we progressed through simpler games to get to the complex strategy games we enjoy now and have a foundation of knowledge that makes a game easier for us to pick up. Then we plop one of those games in front of new players and scare them away.
