    Once I was watching "Captain Planet" when I was a kid and the show had a blond girl who was from the Soviet Union. I asked my father where Soviet Union was and he told me it was a country that didn't exist anymore. I imagine the whole country had submerged into the sea like some sort of Atlantis.

    How can you seriously claim that Gran Colombia "interestingly coincides with the Viceroyalty of New Granada" (which is not even true, since Venezuela had been separated from it since 1777 into the Captaincy General of Venezuela) and that that "might have contributed to the independent Union that followed"? With the main impulse of Venezuela, Gran Colombia was a DIRECT secession from Spanish colonial rule, there's zero coincidences here at all.

    The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies can be seen as a reunification of the Norman kingdom of Sicily, which ruled Sicily, southern Italy and Malta after Norman adventurers liberated these regions from Arab rule and restored the Roman Catholic faith. The kingdom was opposed by the popes, who saw it as being too powerful, and after the extinction of the Norman dynasty, became two separate kingdoms, both styled the Kingdom of Sicily. Sicily itself came under the control of Aragon, while Naples, the capital of the mainland region, was ruled by an Angevin dynasty. The Aragonese and the Angevins were at war for much of the period when these two kingdoms had their separate existence.

But Vichy has authority on both zones and the french colonial empires. When the majority of french empire joined the "free french" and the unoccupied area was occupied by germans, everybody understood Vichy was a fiction. Anyway fiction or not, Vichy was presented as the french government. So, it was France and not a different country.

    It seems that the Schleswig duchy was a vassal state of the Kingdom of Denmark... The notions of "independance" as we know it today were a little bit different in the Middle Age, but if you go that way you could also speak of so many other Duchies and Counties and even Episcopal-Principalties in Europe which were pretty much independants...

  • @Nikolaj11

    @Nikolaj11

    5 жыл бұрын

    A distinction that historians will make is that it wasn't a vassal state of Denmark but a external possession of the Danish royal family. While the different dynasties were kings and queens of Denmark they were also Dukes of Schlesvig-Holstein. Direct integration of, at least the Schlesvig part, was what spawned the wars between the duchies and Denmark, and later supported Prussia and Austria. The Danish king approved a joint constitution, which the liberal nationalists supported, but along with German unification efforts the majority population of the duchies were opposed to this. Old established rules in the duchies, back from when they were initially inherited, guaranteed them seperate administration from the Danish kingdom. When the duchies were annexed by Prussia the same overarching dynasty, Oldenburg, that the monarchs in Denmark come from actually kept possession of the ducal titles of both territories, just from other branches of the family.

    Reminds me of my own experiences with Yugoslavia's later name on maps: I sometimes see maps at school (on walls and in textbooks) that were evidently released between 2003 and 2006, because they show "Serbia and Montenegro" as one country rather than two (or three, if you count Kosovo).

    Good video, just a clarification, Gran Colombia did not separate in the countries as they exist today. Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador came from the dissolution, but Panamá was only independent after 1903 after U.S. intervention. There was also land on the Costa de los Mosquitos (today part of Costa Rica and Nicaragua) that were part of the old republic, these were finally territorial losses of Colombia. Many border disputes occurred, some still exist today, as there is no maritime border with Venezuela and a rocky border situation with Nicaragua. Many of the border definitions are still questionable and a bloody war with Perú also ensued.

    It would be interesting to cover the numerous short-lived states formed after the Austro-Hungarian empire fell apart. For example, The Stare of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs; Banat Republic; West Ukrainian People's Republic etc. Similar for the aftermath of the WWII: Free Territory of Trieste; Saar Protectorate etc. Also, the most interesting history of Germany, or perhaps even more interesting one of Poland and neighboring states. I would suggest that you go into slightly more details, though, than you currently do.

    There's also one country that's no longer exist but the remain is still there. Like Sarawak Kingdom. It was founded by the English Soldier Man, James Brooke... He's a soldier and was in hurt, and when he and the few fellow soldier were trying to get back to Britain (Idk, somehow they were failed forgot why) and discovered Borneo island... Of course the island were ruled by someone and it's Brunei Sultanate and the English men were settling in west sarawak( I can't pin point where it was cause'you guess it, I forgot) and claim the land, just a tiny bit, it's like a micronation size kinda thing and blah-blah-blah, fighting the rebels in brunei blah-blah-blah Brunei gave the land to James Brooke, blah-blah-blah he's a king, blah-blah-blah OK, and then the country now, well, if you have seen the Sarawak state size right now that's how big it was right now 1.5/3 of Malaysia Land, And Sarawak kingdom were recognize by so many people including The United states and the UK, Sarawak kingdom has their own currency and it's a Sarawak dollar and have their own army, economy is growing, more english settled in their also have their own anthem (And it's bad) but still though, better than nothing am I right? And suddenly the Japanese kick the hell out of them after the US nuked the hell out of Japan the British take the land and sayin' hey mate, I take yer land and no, I'm here not to destroy your economy or somethin', alright? calm down, we kick yer ass and go back to idk, wherever you like and NOT Sarawak, okay mate? go. then, the Sarawak citizens heard about this news and protesting the hell out of britain which it takes awhile to calm them down because, OOF th-they love their kings and want the kings family back to Sarawak... Ok, do you know why I was talking about this country and not others? well, it is because brooke is like playing Tycoon games, and it starts from the bottom, a fricking micronation, who cares about micronation right? and Brooke just like hold my tea and starts from the bottom shitless to the fricking hightop...

    The notion of independent nation states is a relatively modern concept dating from the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 which ended the Thirty Years War and was taken up again largely after World War One and the Treaties after that conflict -with the collapse of the four great multi-national empires during and after that war there was a partial attempt to give all the different ethnic groups from those former empires there own homelands -some like the Kurds were missed out and of course the idea didn't apply to the victorious empires like the British and French who still held on to their multi-national empires!
