10 Myths about Introverts Debunked

Introversion is a frequently misunderstood personality trait. Carl Jung coined the terms "introverted" and "extroverted" to describe someone who is either more outward or inwardly focused. In today's world, people still don't know what an introvert is. They think introversion is just some made up excuse for someone who doesn't like to talk, is shy or lack social skills. But far from that, an introvert is simply someone who recharges by spending time alone. In this video, we cover 10 myths that people have about introversion. The video is 6 minutes long, but hopefully you relate! Help us share this video if you agree with these signs about introverts!

For six years after my high school graduation, I avoided going to local shops just to avoid those awkward moments when you see somebody you use to know and you're ( most of the times ) forced to make small talk with them. Those conversations never went well, with the exception of a few that did. Ultimately, I felt it wasn't worth it so, I went full hermit mode for a while and relied on Amazon for my shopping.

Thank you! Finally, someone understands! #10 really hurts me...I've been told many times by even my own family, especially my father, that introversion is wrong and I should "learn to be an extrovert"... I'm the kind of introvert that has a small circle of friends that I like to hang out with occasionally, but for most of my time I'm alone in my room, studying, reading and watching my favorite shows... The worst part about being an introverted student though, is having to work in groups and being told that not raising your hand in class a lot will mean you'll have a lower grade. I work best alone and I really wish that was accepted in our education system...

InternetHobo I'm like you, a lone wolf that likes to just do whatever I want, though maybe to a lesser extent on your side. Though about the working thing, I always work alone but I like getting into groups to socialize which is pretty much what I do in math. Part of the reason I'm failing miserably in that class.

InternetHobo That must suck, but for the sake of keeping everything else together, you’ll need to be more out spoken. It’s ok to raise your hand in class and get an answer wrong and it’s ok to speak to people. It just looks like you need to practice on your social skills a little. Just throw yourself way out of your comfort zone and see where that leads you once and awhile.

#10 hits home for me. I have several teachers who tries to make me work with others. Sometimes I'll do it, most times it makes me really uncomfortable. They also make me do peer mediation which I don't want to do and they tell me things like "you have to break out of your shell" or "with enough time, you can become sociable." I don't see any problem with mine or others introversion. You can't force a person to become more "socially acceptable." Too bad my teachers are too backwards thinking.

Straight up, my dad tried to tell me, "I'm an introvert too!" Even though he loved to go to parties, and talk about the most pointless things. Meanwhile, I'd get dragged along with the rest of my extroverted family to said party, if I didn't have a viable excuse, to which I would get yelled at for standing/sitting by myself and not interacting with people. Being the only introvert in the family SUCKS!!!

It's not that I don't like people. I feel more myself with certain people. 5. Being a leader means taking all problems into thought. Listening should be as important as speaking one's mind. For some reason, I was seen as a bit of a leader. Maybe I can still be one. 6. Not much of a social networker. 7. I've been told I bring a special enthusiasm to certain places. I can enjoy myself and have a fun time. 8. Not much of a public speaker, either, but performing with others I can do no problem. 9. Not looking to sell anything so this doesn't apply. 10. I might be an ambivert after all. Talking, thinking, creativity, these are just a few reasons I came to realize this.

The last one hit me hard. I am very lucky with my friends, but society itself does this all the time. Many popular movies, books, songs, and other things are about "fixing" or "helping" someone who is an introvert. Some even portray us as a new and mysterious character in a game to be acquired. More people need to see this content, because it is absolutely true.

Sorry for commentin on an old comment but this is so true..the 'portrayed as mysterious' bit. Perhaps this is why my former co worker thought I was being 'mysterious' and was like 'ah come drink with us,dont act so prude' .they thought I have some dirty secrets and I pretend to be quiet.🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🫤.I said flat to their face that I go home and watch netflix 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thats my ' dirty secret'. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No sleepin out of wedlock or porn stash. And yeah sure,if they wanted to believe so, they could,I couldnt care less.just leave me alone 🤷🏻‍♀️.Drinkin all night and pissin by the road is their thing, sure,no problem.I am happy with my ' borin/prude' life. What so hard to understand about that.Anyway those were younger days,I was stupid,I should have raised a bullying incident with HR.Now I dont even indulge such nonsense.co workers need to work together when needed and thats all. This 'u need to attend corporate parties to get drunk till u puke culture' needs to go.

I don’t like going out anywhere because I’m always afraid seeing someone I know. I cant even get out the car without looking around like a maniac and thinking “someone I know is ought to be here.” I get very paranoid. And once I’m inside the store there I go again. I tend to go in corners and hide , or go where there isn’t really many people. I always bring my phone so I have a distraction. I usually message one of my friends for help. I explain my social anxiety and tell them to comfort me. It gets me irritated sometimes when they say “just go shop. it’s not that hard.” Yes it is, in fact. Anyways. I just thought I should share my little story. If your like me , know that your not alone. And don’t let people judge you. It’ll be okay.

The last point made my heart heavy because for a long time I've been told I'm selfish for not being social and I have problems not being outside more often. I wasn't sad, but happy because it is good to hear that I'm not alone with being an intorvert. I do go outside and I do enjoy company, but like how the video explained, I like it in small doses and with people that I truly enjoy their company with. Its really nice to have a video like this explain what an introvert's life is like because for awhile I had a hard time explaining it to people.

I had somebody flat out say once that I was a bad friend because I never hung out. Every time he asked me to hang out with him or others, I'd ask what the plan was, but there was no plan. The idea was just to hang out and see what happens, and I could never make him understand how incredibly difficult it is for me to do something with no plan. It became another friendship I had to walk away from because I got tired of being made to feel defective because I'm not what others think I should be. One of many.

That last one almost made me cry. I'm very much an introvert, and everyone keeps telling at me to be more social. Whenever I'm forced into a social environment, I feel incredibly uncomfortable and anxious. On the off chance I want to go to a party or gathering, I will. Force me into it to "break me out of my shell" as some put it, and I will say that I'm introverted, not shy. I just wish people would understand and accept me for who I am. I like being an introvert. I have some really good introverted friends, and we share the struggle. Thanks for this video, this needs to be common knowledge.

I am an introvert and man, it's hard because i'm also incredibly shy and have social anxiety disorder. I go and observe people so that, if they were to ever approach me, i'd know if a stupid conversation is inbound (so that I can avoid it). That public speaking myth is just *wow* because i'd probably be good at that and/or being a leader if I wasn't so shy. It's also sad to know people think that you can just *fix* introversion. I have been a sufferer of that from some teachers in the past or from my counselor, who herself told me, "You have to break out of your shell and be more communicable", and if I remember she wanted me to make friends and try to talk to one of my crushes after that. All your other videos on introverts have taught me much more about myself. Thanks!

My family members are like: "you need to become more social, this is not natural for your age (14)". And if you ask me if I have told them I'm an introvert and what an introvert means them yes, I have. BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO FREAKING UNDERSTAND. Sometimes my mother gets sad because I am doing what I like... Adults nowadays think they have the knowledge to tell if this is good for me or not, they don't know shit(srry for bad language :v). They just don't want to accept that I know some stuff beter than them because I am a kid and I "don't have the experience they have". I don't give a shit how much experience you have, what matters is what you have learned from that, no matter how much you have had of it.

This is so true! When people think about inviting me over they think that I don't know what fun is so they think that I'll just be a mood kill so they don't invite me. Also when I was younger I could decently give a speech, a year ago it was very very hard and now I'm kind of good at it, I get terrified but I can slightly push myself to do it. I've also been told that I should be more outgoing and not so quiet all the time(basically be a extrovert) but that is not my favourite thing whatsoever. I always hate when people try to force me to become something else because they think that I'm 'broken' when I'm not, I wish people, well people I know, would treat introverts better than what they currently do. Because thanks to those people I don't really like to leave my room nor my house, only to go to my boyfriends house because he doesn't judge the way I am and he accepts me and it makes me feel excepted and that's the main place I go.

My mom said that introversion/being a loner can cause suspicion because they are psychopaths, abusers, shooters, etc. :-(

+TITAN BLADE X From what I know of psychopaths I would say they are more likely to be extroverts than introverts because psychopaths love and seek to have power over others. This is usually done through social manipulation (which involves a lot of talking). Of course psychopaths are noting like extroverts, ambivert or introverts. (If they were they wouldn't be labeled as psycho's).

Thank you for this Video. Most helpful. Learning that I am an introvert several years ago. Opened my eyes to why I am the way that I am which I didn't understand or know growing up. At 52 I am still learning and understanding.
