That feeling of shock and awe at the scope of the game that I felt opening the world map after getting to the Siofra River in Elden Ring for the first time and realizing it was an entirely new, fully-built, underground area in this already massive open-world game reminded me of a very distinct similar experience from my childhood. It was the same feeling I got when I beat the Elite Four in Pokemon Gen 2 back in like 5th grade, and then suddenly they put me on a ship, I opened the map, and it's the literal *entire* Kanto region. Epic moments man.

Yeah, there's no greater gaming surprise-and I mean great in both the big and good ways-than finding out a game has significantly more to it than you expected. Like, I'm pretty sure that about 90% of the reason gaming seemed like it was better when you were a kid is because we didn't yet know what to expect from games back then, so were actually being surprised by games. Then we got more experience with games and learned how to pretty well guess what an entire game would overall be from about the first 5% of it and were never surprised again. Game design really needs to put more work into surprising players. Like, hiding parts of the world map entirely until the point where they're accessible, or changing the HUD as you progress so it doesn't even imply certain types of power-ups will be available eventually, that sort of thing. Otherwise it's "oh hey, I got a medallion from this dungeon and there's five more slots. I WONDER HOW MANY DUNGEONS THE GAME HAS."
Fun fact about the Stanley parable, the game asks you at the start of ultra deluxe if you've played the original. If you say no, the game will make you do more of the original endings before the new content door appears.

I'm glad Signalis (9:29) made it to a gameranx list. To me, the most holy s*** thing about this game was that it summoned memories and vibes (insanely great ones) from Another World / Out Of This World, but in a darker and horrifying set. Especially, when I think about it, due to the artistic/graphical path the developers took about the use of (barely-polished) polygons : in the 90s game from Eric Chahi, it was a technical limitation of the era rigs ; in Signalis, it was an absolute choice. One of the 2022 GOTY, in my list.
I know Gameranx has several narators; Falcon is my favorite. He's just so relaxed...almost sounds like stream of thought commentary. Yeah, I know he's got to work from a script, maybe just an outline so he's sure to hit the important points. Yet, relaxed enough as if you're sitting next to him, while he plays, and he's just saying aloud what he' thinking.

On Elden Ring I was in the swamp for the first time and seen what looked like guards with a witch tied to a steak, I turned towards them and a dragon landed skidding through everyone triggering a boss fight. Absolutely blew my mind
A Plague Tale Requiem was one of my favorites of 2022. A lot of the time it felt like Aliens with rats, but there’s a lot more to it. And it has one of the saddest endings in a video game.
I’d also argue that prey 2016 could be in this list when you first shatter the looking glass at the beginning of the game. That for me is one of the biggest shocks I’ve ever had playing any game in recent memory
The Bonus one completely blew my mind, such a good and dark twist
Tunic was definitely my favorite. It's been a long while when a game made me feel like a kid again in just learning about all the secrets that's been there the whole time, i just didn't know it yet.

Cried at the end of Plague Tale: Requiem. It went from a hopeful story of siblings, to some sections that felt like Arya and the Hound and then sudden genre shift to a xenomorph hive. I played High on Life and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It felt like OG Rachet and Clank.

Yeah, if only the whole game was as great as Area Zero. Not that it is bad. But the end of the game was just what they should have been doing with the series all these years.
I like the Witness surprise where the puzzles are everywhere. It becomes obvious early on but the expanse of all the potential puzzles is a revelation. Even the cloud positions in a stock looking skybox is a puzzle.
The first ride on a Sunwing in HFW was one of my top moments
Sonic Frontiers was surprising for having a final boss that felt like it was from another game series entirely, nevermind the fact it became a shoot-em-up.
The Elden Ring elevator was the biggest trip for me because I was also running from a giant bear lol my heart was pounding and I thought of the elevator as a safe haven, the view was even more astounding because of the break it gave me lol

Those Bayonetta Boss Fihts.... Pure LOVE
I think there are several bigger holy shot moments in Elden Ring, like getting kidnapped by the Abductor Virgins and waking up in Volcano Manor, seeing Crumling Farum Azula for the first time (it’s a fucking city in the sky with dragons and tornados!!!) Rykard’s phase 2 cutscene (now THAT was a holy shit moment), Maliketh’s second phase cutscene (and EPIC moveset), seeing Leyendell and the Erdtree up close for the first time, seeing the Elden Beast for the first time plus its beautiful otherworldly cutscene, Godfrey’s second phase, Godrick’s second phase cutscene, the Fire Giant’s second phase cutscene, fighting Radahn with like 6 summons, the Placidussax boss fight, the Fortissax boss fight, seeing the Erdtree on fire, discovering the Roundtable Hold in Leyendell, discovering the hidden passage in Volcano Manor and entering into the prison village, Lansseax’s opening attack during your first encounter, seeing the Altus Plateau, crossing the giant bridge on the Mountaintops of Giants, Discovering the Haligtree, Malenia’s lotus bloom thing, discovering and exploring the sewer tunnels under Leyendell, climbing Mt. Gelmir and finding the Fallingstar Beast in the crater atop the mountain, Rykard’s boss room, Maliketh’s boss room, Mohg’s cutscene, finding the lake of rot, fighting Astel, seeing Leyendell covered in ash, finding the three fingers, the Chaos Flame ending… good God, I could go on. Siofra River well is just the tip of the iceberg. Elden Ring is one holy shit moment after the other. What an incredible game.

The opening sequence of High on Light was hilarious
That GOW surprise was dope.
Thank you for the Bayonetta shout out. Yea the game has mixed reviews and feelings, I still believe that alot of those are exaggerated to a certain degree. But thanks anyways, cause I do believe that it genuinely a good game, just the story is kinda hit and miss in some areas.

No doubt!
Ahh Bayonetta 3! Probably the most fun I’ve had with a character action game! Good list as usual :D
I've been wanting for this so long
Lmao the random Run the Jewels cutaway
This has got to be the best gaming Channel out there because when I started watching it I didn't know any of the games that were mentioned but because of falcons great humor and sarcasm and Jake baldinos enthusiasm I managed to stick around around and learn many things about the gaming world but I just wish that I could actually play some of the great games that are always mentioned
People can love or hate GoW:Rag but when it comes to playing as Atreus they can just quit their whinging. I personally hope they make an entire game were we get to play as Atreus as he searches for his people. More importantly though i'm interested to see SM's take on the next mythology and which mythology it'll be.
That elevator in elden ring reminds me of the first time i entered blackreach in skyrim
I was kinda surprised by the Elden Ring one. No wonder why it got game of the year award.

I kinda miss being blown away by a video game moment, specially in narrative. As is, games just can't stick the landing like series and movies for me.
I quite literally had to pause at high on life and get the keycard because I did not know and I'm now reinstalling tunic 😂 you guys are amazing, thanks 👍😁
First thing I thought of was the elevator in elden ring… still one of my favorite moments in games in general. Another one is the whole professor reveal in scarlet/violet. I was like “oh shiiiiiit” 😂

First
end of chapter 3 rdr2 was a very big holy sh*t moment
This reminded me of how completely awestruck I was when I first discovered that same elevator in Elden Ring. So fuckin sick, definitely my game moment of the year and possibly my game moment of the past 3-5 years 😂
On Bayonetta, I'd say the thriller reference is there cause the same guy made both series and pretty sure he likes michael jackson. He even put another Jackson reference in DMC5

I have no Mouth but I must Scream was genuinely one of the most disturbing works of fiction i've ever experienced.
