steve jobs tbh I beat metro 2033 on ranger pro or what ever the super high difficulty dlc was called after only doing 1 maybe 2 play throughs and it took maybe 1 week of off and on playing to beat it I had more trouble doing gow trilogy on insane then metro 2033 on ranger pro. Now zealot mode on dead space that's a tough difficulty setting

Contra 3 and Battletoads are both way harder than I wanna be the Guy. I wanna be the Guy let's you instantly respawn from the nearest safepoint infinitely, meaning you will always progress. In Contra or Battletoads its just game over.

+FragHero What about Blaster Master for the NES? That game is really hard. I mean, there is a lot of tedious platforming, backtracking and I think you don't get much health at all before you die and have to go back to a previous checkpoint somewhere in the game before you can try again. It would have been a better fit for this list cause a lot of users here are saying that metro is not a very good choice.

if you think Souls games are one of the hardest games around then you have played very little games in your life you probably started gaming with those new AAA shooter games on PS3 and PS4, majoraty of those games are made to be super easy and simple so that even kids can enjoy Souls games are hard compare to new games, sure. but compare to gaming in general, NOT AT ALL my gaming skill is average at best, probably below average I got all the trophies on Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 98% trophies on Demon's Souls, more than 700 hundred hours combined in total I am not good at it, but I am not like those new gamers who can't stand dying more than 10 times, they just couldn't stand the pressure of failing, they are too used to games treating them like a princess and tell them how heroic they are. Souls games are only hard when all you play is generic AAA open world games like Watch_Dogs or Assassin's Creed, those games are pretty much a retarded product for retarded people. I am not saying all games should be hardcore, but seeing those new generation gamers like you yelling around how insanely hard Dark Souls baffles me, all you play everyday is GTA, FIFA and Watch_Dogs, of course you have no gaming skill at all LMAO

Donevin Frownfelter. Well it is technically impossible to compete the game. Beating the game completely to me is getting all trophies, exploring every area, pretty much doing anything and everything that you can possible do in the game then you have beaten the game. Considering its infinite level cap alone it is impossible to beat.

Dark souls in all about rolling left or right at the correct moment

Dark souls isn't that difficult as long as you are patient and use your brain.

As far as newer games go, Ninja Gaiden on Master Ninja I think is the hardest. Devil May Cry 3 was also pretty difficult on DMD, but that was mainly due to you getting killed in one hit while bosses take forever. Just trimming down their health in such small slices was irritating. Hopefully Nioh will be a contender for super difficult games.

Then play Far Cry 1 on hardest, Blood 1, Wolfenstein3D and F.E.A.R 1 on hardest without using the reflex slow motion function. Metro is not hard compared to them

ive got one to add to this: devil daggers. its an endurance game, watch some vids and then look at the longest time someones survived, its insane

William Conover Depends on what difficulty you played it on. On survival mode at ranger difficulty it was a challenge. However, it definitely doesn't come close to Dark Souls or some of the mentions on this list.

Dark Souls is not hard too.Play Super Meat Boy 100% Or R TYPE or any random NES game that was no kids game and DS is a joke to you. I laugh every time when i hear ppl complaining about DS beeing too hard. They should have grown up in the 80-90 when every video game was a challenge... I really miss that times.If u want to play challenging games today there is only indy gaming like, TBOI, SMB, Nuclear Throne or Enter the Gungeon beat games like them and you laugh at DS and especially Metro 2033 even the Ranger mode was Kindergarten but it has nice lore tho

CLIFFHANGER. i would make an asterisk next to it explaining ITS EVEN HARDER on the Sega CD. The difference between the Sega CD version and SNES is the snowboarding levels and avalanche levels. SNES couldn't support the snowboarding levels, so they made you run from an avalanche doing a series of jumps. annoying sequence, but beatable. The Sega CD had multiple, never ending snowboarding levels that were punishingly brutal. The SNES version is a ridiculously challenging game, one that few have actually beaten, but the Sega CD version on Cliffhanger is mind numbingly difficult and unforgiving. Im fairly surprised this hasnt been discussed more. I would ABSOLUTELY love to watch a video of someone going through that start to finish.

Why is Metro 2033 an honorable mention? Even at its hardest difficulty Metro is still an FPS at its core.

I am super disappointed that there wasn't a single Commodore AMIGA games mentioned. For instant games like GODS or Agony are pretty damn hard side scroller with puzzles. What about Last Ninja from Commodore 64?

Devil May Cry 3? I can't be the only one, thinking that game was hard? You die one time, do the whole level over again. Dying to the boss and having to go through the whole level again, to reach the boss and give it another try, was quite the chore.

I always thought Super Mario 2 was rather difficult when I was a kid. Also shocked that none of the Dragon Warrior series made the list.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter should be on this list. That game was tough as nails.

Riven is hard as hell, you don't die but trying to figure out the puzzles is harder than memorising attack patterns.

Stronghold Crusader is the hardest and longest game that I have ever played, not to mention that is one of the best RTS games out there, so well designed in all aspects. And they don't even mention it.

The number one spot should be a game that's actually difficult AND fair (like you mentioned for some other games on the list) Being fair and difficult is a test of skill...while that retardedly hard game is just a test of patience to see how many times you can die before you've finally memorized every little pixel of the game so you can dodge whatever it is that will kill you

Its still more difficult than the rest of the games on the list, but, I agree the whole list is pretty damn bad overall. Also while IWBTG is mostly memorization, there are sections that are pure platform hell even if you know the traps, those actually requiere precision.

That one jungle mission in Socom US Navy Seals on Veteran difficulty. Tried 72 times in order to beat it.

Takeshi's Challenge should be on here and number 1 lol. Like, I'm surprised it wasn't on this list.

You forgot the Sega Master System version of After Burner. The final stage Flying Fortress missiles are literally undodgable and it fires them the instant the battle begins

Battle Squadron on the Sega Mega Drive is the hardest game I ever played. So hard that its no longer fun to play. The game never gives you a rest. You have dodge bullets throughout the whole game, none stop.

I beat Ninja Gaiden Black on the hardest difficulty setting back in the day. God I loved that game such a rush.

I remember Ecco the Dolphin getting harder and harder as you moved through the levels.

dark souls and demon souls are part of the same series, they both shouldn't be on the list. Bayou Billy and Super R-Type are pretty tough. Totally forgot about TMNT by konami for the nes too

My 2 hardest games were from the NES era, like some of the ones in this list. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, and The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man. The latter of the two, I couldn't even get more than a couple minutes into level 1 before hitting a barrier of some kind that was impossible to cross, so either an enemy would kill me, or my character would just die from the level timer running out. I put that POS out of my misery with a sledgehammer.

I got REALLY far in N years ago, loved the game, but that laptop died so I lost everything, I miss that game.

I think the Stalker franchise is one of the hardest game series, because you can die as fast as your enemys and the ai is very clever and trys to flak or rush you. Also the parts of world can kill you if you don`t know how to interact with them.

Some of these games aren't actually that hard once you memorize the patterns, games such as beatmania IIDX are that genuine hard

i feel like there are a lot other games that are way harder than some of the honorable mentions and even some on the list

Just to throw a couple more games in the mix. The alien trilogy on ps1 was very difficult and the very old but great strategy game total annihilation on the hardest setting was difficult but doable until one of the campaigns last levels. At the beggining of the level you have the most powerful krogoth robot and half of your base built but all of that is damaged to the point that it is impossible to save it while being constantly atacked from the start of the mission

Every game is hard when one of your buttons isn't working.

For me as a kid, it was The Lost Vikings on SEGA that took the biggest effort to finish.

I remember the old Game Gear Sonics were really hard lol. There was a stage where u had to go through pipes at super high speed and u have to press the directional buttons to control sonic which pipe to head next or else u die if choosing the wrong path. I had to repeatedly press pause the slow the game down to beat it lol. In fact that was how I beat a lot of these old games haha

minecraft, blood and bones modpack or HurtWorld Modpack these are Masocore Modpacks where you need to spend Hours only to get a functional foodsorce that is save from enemys
