They are part of the history of gaming. Originally such "levels" were either bugs, like the Minus World or "jokes" by programmers, like the ADVENTURE one, but they became cult and a game has to have them to be cool. Like with cheat codes, which originally were only there for testing the game, not for players. But who would actually belive anybody would spent the resources needed for making a secret level in a modern(ish) game without wanting it to be found.

mathieu own Finding the boss in Dark Souls 3, the sign in Crash, that Adventure level, the cow level and the minus world aren't like that at all. The Princess Secret Slide level in Mario64 is placed somewhere you're so likely to find it it's practically mandatory that you do.

It's not Diablo 2 they deny a cow level it's Diablo. The cow level in Diablo 2 was made because the rumor about a secret cow level in Diablo was so popular.

I'm pretty sure those doom levels were mentioned in their marketing, WD specifically WERE supposed to find them xD

How is the upside down castle a secret level or easter egg? It's part of the story.

WTF? Peach's slide in Mario 64 is not a secret level. You actually get a Star which counts towards the 120 in the game so it was obviously intended as a normal level. Maybe you stuck it in coz it's Peach's Secret slide...or coz you pass through a window? But nah, it's not a secret because it was meant to be found.

Cow level... they admit there is a cow level in 2. The original story of it started in 1 where there was no cow level but stories of there being on spread with an assortment of supposed ways to get to it. The devs put a cow level in 2 as a homage to that.

Ah, the good old legendary achievements like you just have to press A 1,000,000.... times in under ten seconds to get... How many of those I fell for as a kid. jjjih sjsysg well, when you find the dragon statue you already should have the dragon stone(was that the name? I don't remember) so it kind of feels natural to try and use it there, see that nothing happens and get curious about it, said curiosity leading you to investigate zones and find out the other part to use near the statue. (At least that's what i did)

The one in Orgrimmar where u have to bug urself into a wall and fly under the city and up a mountainside to see a secret memorial for one of the original developers. That u missed that one is incredible

Inverted castle wasn't a secret level we were never meant to find. We were totally meant to find it. And there was no cow level ...in diablo 1. We used to troll the fuck out of players looking for a cow level. Telling them to do time consuming things like gathering a whole inventory of gold and then drop it around wirt or cain or whoever you wanted to pick that day, and then press alt f4 to enter the cow level.

I was actually planning on Borderlands but now that i saw this and they actually have a Minecraft easter egg with actual Creepers now i want to get it more lol.

I thought you were doing a video about unfinished levels hidden within code that needed to be hacked in order to be seen? These levels I think were ment to be found but only by players who loved the game and explored it immensly.

you ARE meant to find the secret slide. you need to to collect all of the castle stars.

I remember when I was too young to be good at video games and my dad was watching me play that crash bandicoot racing level, I kept on driving off the road and he would just laugh at me then I crashed into that sign and he couldn't believe it.

Borderlands has many other secret levels and fun references but yeah, you don't want ALL borderlands on a list.

-1 in super mario bros was really the only level you "aren't supposed to find" the others are just normal secret levels or easter eggs.... what about Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks boss survival mode? it was a boss rush that was originally made to be in the game but got taken out but is still accessible by breaking barrells and doing weird movements in a certain order, but it can corrupt your save file... that's what I consider secrets you aren't meant to find

Your title has different meaning to what you're trying to say.

The original Mortal Kombat,the Pit stage after getting 2 flawless victories and performing a fatality a message prompts that you have successfully found a secret character in the name of Reptile and you fight him at the bottom of the pit stage.

For Borderlands 2, I think the Treasure Room/Elevator glitch in the Pirate's Booty DLC was the one the developers NEVER intended for players to discover. It's technically an exploit, but since Gear Box have no intention on fixing it (after 4 or 5 years) I would consider it a secret level.

Because with the exception of the negative level one all of these were meant to be found. That one was likely supposed to be removed from the game but wasn't due to costs (it isn't as simple as deleting a few lines of code).

The Twisted Metal 2 secrets were pretty awesome. They hid easter eggs around their world that revealed how to unlock their secrets you' mostly only find by accident and added a nice layer to the game. That Jet Moto level, that one city level from TM1 and unlocking Minion. I think Sweet Tooth was also needed a code??? I forget.

There are some really bad entries on this list. The Nameless King isn't a secret at all and neither is the MineCraft Easter egg in Borderlands 2. The Borderlands 2 one is where you get the Longbow sniper and it was extremely well known almost as soon as the game was released.

Pandoras Flame Actually, there was even an article published about it, the April fools day before Borderlands 2 came out. I remember finding the minecraft room within a few hours of the games release. Hardly a secret...in fact, most of the levels on this list are meant to be found and not secrets at all.

I wasn’t going to dislike, just leave in peace... then you brought up the inverted castle... literally half the game... now you have one extra dislike :D

In the game Darksiders II there are 4 " GnoMAD's Gnome's " hidden in secret area's. Each time I found one of the Gnomes when playing the game it gave me a giddy feeling like I had really accomplished something special.

Bliz says there's no cow level in Diablo 1, not Diablo 2....

Crash Bandicoot 3 has a whole world of secret levels and you can't clear the game without clearing that, so I'm guessin' you were meant to find it...

most of the level are actually meant to be found. as for the cow level, there isn't any cow level at the beginning, but the story spread so much that the developer decided to add it in, and until now, they still use "there is no cow level" as a joke/meme.

Misleading title

We did not get a cow level for Diablo's 20th anniversary in WoW. You did not get there by killing a treasure goblin and certainly did not click on a portal that never sent you to Darkshire where there was no Cow King who did not drop any toys or loot. You also did not get an achievement for never doing it because there was no cow level.

This is where the StarCraft cheat "There is no cow level" Suddenly makes sense!

I mistakenly rang that bell and faced the storm king. Completely caught me off guard.

Doom loading screens mention classic levels being on every level of the game, they are also quite obviously visible on the map.

This list is false. Not meant to find something, means it wouldn't even have items or such detail to them. Some of these are part of the game itself and not hidden at all whatsoever. The Minus World is the only literal hidden level that people were literally by the definition of the meaning, not meant to find.

Hmmm, I think you should have mentioned how the cow level came to be. They don't deny its existence in D2, but it does not exist in D1. There were tons of rumours about how clicking on cows a certain amount of times can open a cow level, then Blizzard put a cheat in starcraft "thereisnocowlevel" then they put a very real cow level into Diablo 2.

Clearly, this guy did not research enough to know that the cow level was created due to public demand which was like the "Giv Diretide" of the time.

Secret levels - Yes. Were never ment to be found? - No. They were ment to be found. A level that is not ment to be found is like old ironforge in wow or similar. Something incomplete or glitched. All those in the video except the mario swim are all ment to be found.

This title is misleading. There are levels that were taken out and were literally never meant to be found, that last one about mario probably qualifies. However all of the rest of these are stock standard easter eggs. Nice ones, sure, but totally ordinary and pretty widely known for the most part. Please dont mislabel your videos. Dislike.

Diablo didn't have a cow level, which blizard have confirmed and still stand by. Diablo 2 they added the cow level as an easter egg to the old Cow level myth. In other words: Cow level doesn't exist in the first diablo(hellfire does however contain one, because of the old myth), and that's where the myth existed. No one have ever claimed that the cow level doesn't exist in Diablo 2.

Blizzard claims there was no cow level in Diablo 1, because there wasn't. But they ended up making the level for fans in the second game.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with finding unique game glitches, boundary breaks, by use of codes, it's your game play it the way you see fit, handicaps off or on as long as your having fun.

You guys REALLY need to check out the hidden "Black Spindle" mission in Destiny. It's super challenging, only available rarely. And boasts a large reward for completing it!

In the Starcraft campaign (which is also made by Blizzard) there is a cheat code you type into the message queue that lets you skip the current level you’re playing. That cheat code is: There is no cow level... Totally did not get that reference until now, 😂😂😂

There's a hidden level in Super Princess Peach that I never see anyone talk about (maybe because no one played that game?). Actually there are several. I forget how to get there, may have something to do with rapidly pressing the A button, I'll have to get back here when I remember. Anyway, you can do this on any level -- go to Ladida Plains, or the ghost mansion, or the tropical level, any. Then you have to rapidly press A at a certain time, or walk past the boss level, I forget. Either way, the secret level will always be a weird copy of the first stage for that level, but often without the ground. I think there is only one that you can actually play all the way through, because of this. There are also colors mixed up, characters and objects missing, etc... In some, you'll die instantly because there's no ground and you drop into an abyss. Once you exit the stage, Peach will be standing on an area before the first stage of the level, where you usually can't get to.

That #1 choice gave me a hell of a throwback..

Why was this titled 'never meant to find' That implies something more like a level that was left in the game the developers sealed behind a wall or something you aren't supposed to access via normal means other than glitching or hacking. These are more easter eggs

The King of Storms is the name of the wyvern while the Nameless King is riding him fights you after taking the power from the King of Storms after the player kills it.

"Super Mario Bross" And, if it's a secret PURPOSEFULLY LEFT IN THE GAME, LIKE AN EASTER EGG LEVEL, then yes, people were supposed to find them. If it was a TEST LEVEL, then no, they weren't supposed to find them. Those would make more sense than easter eggs on this list.

I still find it funny that in spite of all the proof of the cow levels existence, there's still people who deny it exists lol

What about Warden Sharpe's secret room in Arkham Asylum? Rocksteady literally had to leak it themselves because no one could find it. Sad too see it didn't make the list.

In Dying Light that's a secret meant to be found. Plants vs Zombie tribute is a way harder one to find. And knowing the amount of easter eggs and hidden blueprints etc in that game I'm quite sure there are plenty of more to find. Blueprint for Korek Machete v2 is perhaps one of the things players migth not supposed to find.

The nameless king is not a secret level. While yes you have to complete some optional stages within the game to access it, it's quite well known at this point.

The only legitimate room you "Were Never Meant To Find" on this list is the final Mario one. Real examples would be along the lines of Duke3D's "You're not supposed to be here" locations, Legend of Zelda's Chris Hooligan Room, the Elder Scrolls Toddtest/Testinghall/QASmoke, the Golden Sun Debug room etc.
