Skyrim has the Far Cry 3 phenomenon about it. Nobody ever played a game like that before. It was novel. If you look at both objectively, they are pretty lame and redundant, and the gimmick has long since been overdone. But everyone who was there has this nostalgia for both games, and its tainted their ability to be objective about it. And so people say silly things like Skyrim was better than Starfield and Far Cry 3 is the best one. Lol

tbh the tricky part of Cyberpunk is it's still argued what was actually promised. There were 'promises' that went viral about the game that were actually poor translations of Polish interviews posted to Reddit and then picked up by English gaming journalists. There's also the bits that youtubers and fans themselves fabricated, like a Fallout-style reputation system being in the game. There are parts that definitely were overpromised like realistic random NPCs with day/night cycles and routines, and of course base PS4 performance was an outright lie, but if you actually go back bullet point by bullet point about what was "overpromised/underdelivered" then it's not the same as what the other games on the list were about.

No Man's Sky is likely the reason people were so disappointed in Starfield. It did actually make good on the promise of MASSIVE entire planets and galaxies you could explore. Sure it didn't live up to the hype initially, but the developers didn't give up. They put a lot into it to make it a much better game over time.
Anybody else notice how much the motion and character animations Forspoken were to InFamous games? Like, practically reskinned from that series?

Hot take, but GTA V. Now, don't get me wrong, it is a fantastic game an almost every way. But it had so much potential that didn't go anywhere. You can see when they realised that GTA Online was a money printing machine and they just abandoned the base game. No DLC, and nothing from the online pushed over even. I've played it so much now that it is still fun, but I don't love it any more.
Man, advent rising deserved a sequel. I loved it. From what I remember, it had a progression system where whatever you were doing is what leveled up and improved. Use a lot of telekinesis, than your telekinesis grow stronger with more abilities. Used guns a lot, you got faster at reloading, had less recoil, better aim, did more damage.
I was not up to date on the promises made regarding Fable and kinda just came across it by chance years after it was released. Could not put that thing down! Literally played it all night and then went to university classes. Still one of my favourite games ever because it not only had loads of unique systems and options I had never seen before in a game, but also just such an awesome vibe to it! Would definitely recommend it to everyone who hasn´t played it yet
It absolutely burns but you’re right about Fable. I loved the first Fable so much, though, even though it overpromised. It was beautiful and great to hear so many British regional accents in a game.

For all of Starfield's shortcomings, that ship builder is addictive
At first I liked Starfield. The fast traveling and load screens didnt bother me because I saw it as an improvement over playing like Elite. 1. Video games are having to release sooner for the studio, publisher, and shareholders to make money. With Starfield, I did enjoy the game. It didnt bother me that you could land on all the planets. My issue was, they didnt focus on the main cities enough. Cyberpunk 2077
I love the first 3 Fable games. They were fun and immersive for me. Thanks.
For Starfield, being someone who wasn't a Bethesda fan, I out about 20 hours into Oblivion, and 20 into Fallout 3, and never touched Skyrim or Fallout 4, although I've seen plenty videos on them. Starfield was the first game they have released that I enjoyed thoroughly. Not a perfect game by any means, but there was so much to like. When all the noise came out around release of people comp raining about this and that, I remember going back to the announcement vids and the developer previews. My feeling is that they kind of delivered exactly what they promised, like right smack bang on the line of what they promised but not an inch further. And a lot of what people were disappointed by was really just the overhyping themselves and projecting things into the negative space of what was actually said. I had a blast with it, really looking forward to going back whenever shattered space DLC releases.
People who just played Starfield like Fallout 4 in Space (main and side quests) had a blast. Those who focussed on the side content (exploration, base building, ship building) were disappointed because it was not fleshed out. Another case of trying to please everyone and not delivering.
Calling “Too Human” just okay is a huge overstatement. That game is atrocious

I remember buying the game, playing it for like an hour, and being bored out of my mind and never touching it again. It was such a bad game. If an action game can’t hook you within an hour, then there’s a problem.

I quite enjoyed it. If you like Free Flow Combat Systems like in Arkham and Mordor, thank Too Human. The Graphics are still incredibly well done even up against modern standards. Story was interesting...but mainly, that First Cutscene is incredible and really grabs you.
OMG BRINK!!! I never thought yall would talk about this game. I remember some dude at GameStop hyping that game up and convinced me to pre-order. I played for 2-3 months and backed out. Loved the movement and character design and that was about it. I wasted 50-60 bucks lol.
I loved Fable. Didn't like the rest of the series, but I still have an xbox to play Fable the Lost Chapters. I didn't find it until it had been out for years so I had no hype and just stumbled into it. One of my favorite games.

Fable 2 was ok but fable 3 was terrible
Elden Ring and RDR2 are the only games I've played in the last 6 years where I feel like they truly couldn't have done more to give their fanbases games that were both huge and excellent. Shoutout Baldur's Gate 3 but I have yet to try it myself and probably won't until my son goes to preschool in 3ish years.
Comparing what I preordered to what i played on day of release then No Man's Sky is top of the list. To their credit, they have supported, updated and committed in the following years, but still. No Man's Sky
_Starfield announces content update with new area_ "Oh boy, more endless empty wasteland for you to spend 99% of your play time just walking!"
Love me some Jake Baldino
I oddly loved brink of the few times you could get a match, back during those days when you'd go into GameStop physically and look at the bargain bin and just grab a few games going strictly off the box and when you get back home and play those games, that a few of them were actually pretty good.

Finally! Someone who understands. Everyone keeps on saying that the next game will be Mass Effect 5 but we never got 4. The only ME games that exist are ME 1, ME2, ME3 and the legendary edition which is a remaster.

Advent Rising has a VERY enthusiastic community. Years ago a co-worker was SO adamant about how amazing this game was that he GAVE me his copy of the game as well as his original Xbox so I could bear witness to it. Well worth the play! I thank dude to this day for the experience. Then again, I feel the same way about Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning..!

Not sure how you can say starfield over promised when they told you from the very beginning most planets were gonna be lifeless and were pretty much only for resource collecting.

"The planets aren't just a backdrop you can actually go there" Meanwhile I'm crashing on the 3rd out of 5 loading screens needed to get there. They also said you would have complete freedom of choice which is a blatant lie. They restrict certain NPCs from being able to be ended, you can't do the main quests if you do to many evil things because every single main character will disapprove so you essentially are forced into being a good guy. Also purposely disceptive marketing is equally dishonest. Saying there are endless planets with endless possibilities is as much of a lie as anything There are a handful of maps that get regenerated with a handful of bases or outpost that get reused at nauseum to the point where you can go to 15 different planets to collect bounties and go through the same 15 abandoned research outpost with every item and enemy on the inside even being the exact same so you just memorize them. And then of course the many claims of indepth space travel that doesn't exist. I've logged well over 100 hours in this game and am currently on NG++ so I'm not a hater of this game, it's just remarkably mid as an RPG and if it wasn't for the janky ship builder and outpost builder I wouldn't be playing it still.
I don’t understand the hate for Starfield. Loved that game.
I’ve never played Starfield but I have played and loved Elite Dangerous. I can see why people think space sims are boring but I loved Elite Dangerous and Starfield just seems like ED part 2. I honestly can’t wait until it comes on PlayStation. I’ll get it for sure.
I for one, would like to see an Under promised and Over delivered video next
Star Citizen absolutely deserves a place on this list. But people shouldn't be writing it off, the recent patches it's been getting are massive. The biggest feature is "server meshing" which finally allows them to scale up the player count exponentially.
Cyberpuke should be no. 1 because it’s a giant load of no.2.
My GF worked in electronics at target back when Fable was going to launch. She mentioned I was into RPG’s and he swore it was the most advanced, head turning game ever developed. He made it sounded like it was going to change games forever. Sooo much hype from that guy. I never bought it.
Glad you brought Brink to the conversation. I remember its trailer almost frame by frame, and the thrill it gave me. I couldnt fucking wait to see it in action. And then... you guys know the rest.

Cyberpunk is one of the best games that has came out in years... it launched messed up but today it's amazing
Advent Rising is one of gaming's most underappreciated gems. Right alongside the Breath Of Fire series, Kingdoms of Amalur, and MegaMan Legends 😭
Hope gameranx always deliver and never change
Soooooo... in a nutshell: Overpromise + Underdeliver = XBox... Sounds so, so right!
This is what I wanted. Thank you Gameranx for an uncompromising take on the genre ! Which once again elevated the discussion. BEEP BOOB ! lol STOP answering the bots !
Hearing Fable come up has reminded me of what has been shown and discussed with the upcoming Fable release. Now im a bit sad 😂. Gotta say you made a great list here.
Damn good video Jake
As a Starfield player there is still that part of me that isn't entirely enthusiastic about any of the DLC, bells and whistles when apparent bugs are still in the game; case in point, adding the ability to create your own interior ship design, yet items still sink into surfaces. Regarding adding story content, it's great...but I think just enhancing gameplay such as landing and suddenly finding oneself under random attack instead of going to a location to trigger an encounter would have made exploration a bit more interesting. Even enemy ship encounters are a bit too few.
Very surprised Skull & Bones wasn't at 1. I also expected No Man's Sky, but they did turn that into an awesome game with tons of great updates
Getting horns or a halo depending on your playstyle was awesome in the first Fable back in the day.
The thing I always remember about Brink is when G4 turned it into a verb for any parkour type thing.
I always thought it was really weird that in Fable, your character grows to be a really old man, but your sister stays the same age. I never liked that the character would go through ridiculous stages of age rapidly without any explanation
I'm glad I didn't spend 10 years obsessing about every little detail surrounding Starfield because I knew little about it when it released, other than it was probably 'Skyrim in space', so I enjoyed every bloody minute of it. Great game. Didn't underdeliver for me but there were aspects I didn't enjoy too much/was disappointed in but I just went in to it hoping for more Bethesda goodness.
Kerbal space program 2 deserves a spot on this list
I remember me and a friend putting down $5 for a pre-order of Brink after we saw the cinematic trailer for it because it hyped us up. This was back when I was stupid and was easily swayed by trailers. Then it came out and I saw the reviews and gameplay. I never went to go pick up the game or even bothered to get my pre-order money back.
