A genuine masterpiece in every meaning. I remember being like 8 years old and emailing Sony every few days asking if they were making a sequel yet. They must have gotten 60+ of those emails from me. As well as at least a couple emails asking if I could have the rights to make a sequel myself, since obviously they weren't interested in doing it. 😂

I remember when it came out it was kinda divisive although I forgot what the issues were. The online outlets back then and some magazines were lukewarm. Eventually overtime the appreciation for the game grew and it's considered a classic. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

I liked this game so much that I would fail attacks on purpose to find the exact enemy HP and made my own bestiary. Something unique about LoD is how the common enemy tactics change when they reach 1/2 HP. Most games seem to only have enemy behaviour change for boss battles and optional bosses.

When the 360 came out there was a small rush of JRPG releases in a Microsoft bid to get entry into the Japanese market, which then dried up almost completely. About the only 360 JRPGs after the first year or so were the FF13 series. This was partly because the 360's use of DVDs rather than Blu-Ray drastically limited game size - nobody ever mentions Lost Odyssey came on 2-3 DVDs (and as a result was a late arrival to the XB1's emulation support.)

Skimming the DS titles, i found that one and it just jumped out at me somehow. Maybe it was the long name. But I read the back of the box and the premise got me hooked. The crazy thing about the Sega Saturn's short life is that its follow-up, the Dreamcast, had a SHORTER lifespan. The Saturn launched on May 11, 1995 in the U.S. and was discontinued in March 1998, 2 years and 10 months later. The Dreamcast launched in the U.S. on November 27, 1998 and was discontinued on March 31, 2001, 2 years and 4 months later. I'm usually not taking the bate of complaining about your personal favorites not being on the list... but this time, I can't help myself. Take a game that pushed the boundries of what was technically possible, is mechanically as close to perfect as you can expect from the time, is well balanced, has really few bugs, gameplay that was so ahead of it's time as fusion power is, and you ice that cake with a compelling narrative that is playabale through different perspectives, making it highly replayable and has one of the most stellar voice casts of any video game ever... so, what's that game? It's Sacrifice.

I'm glad Lost Odyssey is on this list. Such a great JRPG. The battle system is a bit of learning curve, at least it was for me, but nonetheless a great game. The narrative is probably the best part of it.

The only slight I could put on Perfect Dark was the visuals. You can tell they were just a little too ambitious for the N64 so they get the blurriness that Goldeneye didn't have

Project Snowblind & Operation Winback are masterpiece games imo. Winback was a title originally released on the N64. I think I bought it out the bargain bin. That game was so fun and had so many gameplay mechanics that were used in many later video games, including Metal Gear Solid Sons of liberty and Resident evil 4. Ahead of its time.

Lost Odyssey was a favorite of mine on the 360. I remember at one point Microsoft gave out digital copies for free. I instantly grabbed it up and played through it. I then went to GameStop that same week and found a used physical copy in great condition for a decent price (my guess is someone owned it physically, got the free digital version, and then decided to trade in the physical copy).

Unpopular opinion here. Planescape: Torment's were too obscure for its own good. Puzzles were mandatory back then but it was before KZread. Outside of Gamefaqs you'd have to shell out $25-30 for a strategy guide. That essentially doubled the cost of the game.

Blue Dragon is another great RPG game that deserves it's flowers too,in some cases it was better than Lost Odyssey and was rated higher in multiple gaming magazines back then, while Lost Odyssey was given an 8 on Gameinformer Blue Dragon was rated a 9,I have both and love them very fun,but Blue Dragon is the better game imo, another forgotten gem was the Wario game on the Gamecube, that game was amazing and everyone should've been able to play it if they love platformers, there's lots of other great yet forgotten games and it's a shame most of us won't ever get to play them unless we use emulators lol

Soul Sacrifice Delta for the PlayStation Vita. Imagine an arcadey Monster Hunter clone with the aesthetics and narrative of Berserk/Dark Souls, and 10/10 art direction, world building, characters, voice acting, music, and gameplay. Similarly, Puppeteer for the PS3 is basically Sony's 10/10 try at the same general type of game as Balan Wonderworld and Princess Peach: Showtime!. And to continue on the JAPAN Studio train, the Gravity Rush series deserves way more love than it got, with 2 essentially being Spider-Sonic: Breath of the Yakuza's Odyssey.

A list about forgotten masterpieces, yet once again Suikoden doesn't get any love. Suikoden was one of the first franchises to feature save importing, all the way back on the original Playstation. It's a game that featured 108 playable characters, featured wartime combat, had positioning in your party play a factor on how your team performed, featured a 6-person party system, and allowed you to build up your own base to take on the might of the Empire, of which you were the heir to. Characters die, and there is genuine weight for your choices. Despite all that, it's sequel, Suikoden II is EVEN MORE revered, and at the peak of it's cult classic status, had physical copies selling for over $500 USD. For all the talk people have about Chrono Trigger being a great game, having played both Suikoden and Chrono Trigger on the Playstation as a kid, and later as an adult on the PSP and PC respectively, Suikoden is the better game, unironically, IMHO, and is a game that deserves VASTLY more love than it gets. Hopefully when the Suikoden I & II Remaster finally drops, people will finally be talking about these games the way they deserve.
