It's because Bisaya people are used to speak Bisaya with fellow Bisaya even in homes, schools, public venues, and etc. Other Filipinos like me who lives in Zamboanga really need to speak Filipino or Tagalog, because in Zamboanga we speak different languages like Bisaya also, Chavacano (my native language), Tausug (language of the Tausug tribe), some are speaking Subanon, some are Ilonggo, some are Sama-Badjao people speaking Sama language, and some are migrant students from Manila or other parts of Luzon...... the only thing we can speak so we can all understand is Tagalog or Filipino and English, cause that's what are taught in schools....... Sa mga lugar ng mga Bisaya kasi ay wala gaanong problema, kasi lahat nagbi-Bisaya saanmang lugar, eh dito sa amin maraming wika, kaya no choice kundi mag-Filipino o mag-Tagalog kami rito........... kaya nasanay ka po sa Bisaya at hindi ka gaanong marunong sa Tagalog o Wikang Filipino. You found it hard to speak Filipino because people around you don't speak it also....that's the reason...... While us here in Zamboanga City, we speak different languages, so in order for us all to understand despite of languages differences, we use Filipino or Tagalog in speaking to one another..... :) Vaya con Dios con usted!

These translations arent 100%, but its ok. One concept that isnt used frequently in modern english but quite often in Tagalog is the word "sana." It represents the subjunctive mood, and the closest english translation would be "would it were so." The word "sana" conveys both hopefully longing but also wanting something that one knows is impossible.

+Unicorns And ponytails it's close, but not much...it has more meaning to it than what you've said before... pajamas is different from pambahay...pambahay is any comfortable clothes that you wear inside your home in contrast to the ones you usually wear when you're at work, with friends, or in school..although pambahay can also be worn outside if you're feeling really lazy that day and just wants to feel comfortable and such... it is different from typical pajamas which can only be worn at night romance and love are basically the same thing...we call it pagibig or pagmamahal. kilig and gigil on the other hand, well...it's that thing you feel when you're in love...it is as if you have butterflies on your stomach angered is nagalit or galit...tampo is a little bit milder than galit...it's a little bit difficult to explain. it's like you still like them but at the same time, you hate them..that kind of thing..pikon is when you get angry so easily when other people teases you or something shy is mahiyain...it's different from torpe...you're a torpe if you can't confess your love to your crush or if you get easily embarrassed when you see or get near to your crush ... it's more about love rather than being generally shy towards others and such craving is natatakam or takam... it's different from lihi because you only get lihi when you're pregnant...it's usually some weird cravings that you get that you really didn't want to eat before...like balut or unripe mangoes with shrimp paste on the side...things like that... also, it's not only limited to food, they can also make lihi to other things such as people, animals, or dolls...they want to always see these things around them because they get so amused by it or something...idk it's quite complicated...it is said that if you crave something while you're pregnant, the characteristic of that thing or person will be passed on to your baby...so yeah, weird huh?

Obviously they do. All these languages are Malay. Before you prove me wrong, most of these countries and races came from the "Tanah Melayu" so they'd all speak similar languages. For example the word four, in Malaysia it's empat. Some other countries use papat, pat and so on.

It reminds me of Javanese word 'kêri' (kuh-ree). It's some feelings like tickling hence can make you laugh until 'ngakak' 😂😂. In Indonesian / Malay it would be 'geli' (guh-lee). But, the Filipino 'kilig' is more on the intangible sense / feeling while the Javanese one is mostly used in the physical manner (hand-tickling). Maybe they are cognates, I don't know... Anyway, thank you... Mahal kita ❤

Most of these words have actual and near accurate English equivalents. The ones that I could not think of close translations are gigil, kilig, and lihi. What I am really interested to know is to give a good translation of the word arte. It has so many meanings depending on context.

Cool. I have a cousin who is Pinoy and Black and I've seen many of these words on her feed. One thing I've noticed is how short the words generally are. Maybe all languages have mostly short words but I never noticed before. *shrug* #TheMoreYouKnow

Okay, for the sake of all the idiots out there (don't care who you are or what your race is, if you're going to comment, be prepared for criticism or at least some correcting), DEFINING and TRANSLATING are two different ideas. I can define one concept but there's a possibility I can't outright translate it. When you define, you're giving the meaning or possibly the synonym of a word. When you translate, you're getting a synonym of a word in a different language, dialect, tongue, whatever. So please remember, when you leave elementary that defining a word doesn't mean translating it.

close enough, giddy is a vague word which means you can feel giddy about an event or something but kilig can only be used to someone you desire or adore

And 'papak' is not limited to foods usu. eaten with rice. Usually it can be translated to 'snack' (vb.). Like to snack on food or what have you.

How about "Grabe" (which I think comes from the Spanish word "Grave" means serious)

It means that there is no English equivalent of the word. That u can't directly translate it into English. Imagine if u use the translation in an English sentence, the sentence would either be too long or it wouldn't make any sense

+diablomix PJs are usually used for sleeping, not always for just lounging around the house. A lot of people do use jimjams as "pambahay", but others don't. The word actually is shortened from "damit na pambahay", or "clothes for use at home".

pambahay in transliteration would mean "for home" but it is known to filipinos as a comfortable clothing that you would wear at home.

From what i'm reading here, you are all describing pajamas to a tee. You only wear PJ's around the house and for lounging around on a lazy day. Jimjams can be anything from an old shirt and sweatpants to a jammy set you buy at the store. PJ's/Pajamas/Jammies/Jimjams sound exactly like Pambahay.

+Pyramanager tampo is when you argue with a s.o. (for example) and you "cool it off" or you give that s.o. the cold shoulder. But you still love them very much. That's tampo. lambing is more "affectionate" or "giving affection" than love. umay is more of fatigue from eating the same food over and over again. Key idea is the same food. Usually the case with deep-fried foods. Gigil translated as urge is OK, but gigil is more associated with feelings that make you shake, as in shake in anger or shake in excitement or shake in finding something super cute. Kilig as ecstasy is not adequate...it's more like "butterflies in the stomach" or that feeling when you see your crush walk by. Feeling "kilig" usually makes the person giggle. Torpe is more used in the romantic sense than being shy in general. Lihi is not at all like hungry. Like the video said, it's an irrational craving felt by most pregnant women, and a lot of Filipinos believe that if a pregnant woman becomes fixated over that food, her child would have a characteristic of that food. E.g., if a woman has "lihi" for mangoes, people may say that she may have a sweet child.

They don't capture the spirit of the word...that's why you can't just translate them into a single word in English. For example gigil is not urge. You know when that little girl from Despicable Me went, "IT'S SO FLUFFEHHHH!!" That's gigil in a sense. It can also be used when you are sooooo angry at someone and you just want to explode in fury and you want to inflict pain but you know you're not supposed to.

umay is not full, or stuffed.. full or stuffed in filipino means "busog".. imagine having same meal every single day,. you will feel " umay" about that food even if you are hungry, you dont want to eat anymore of that, you want something different.. sometimes its not always about food, you can feel umay on a person or tv shows or anything you are tired of seeing.

Papak actually means to eat many foods or eating a packed food in a short time

Aerus it can't be tampo. If you say, "he's sulking because his father died," You won't translate it into "Nagtatampo siya dahil namatay yung tatay." That wouldn't make sense.

Picón in spanish exist with the same meaning. It came from "picar", "picarse". Also "torpe" is a Spanish word.

It is possible to translate some of these words :P Either using approximants and there are actually some with direct translations :) (Anything with an *) Tampo: A bit like Upset Pambahay: Loungewear* (Not Pyjamas! We call PJ's Pangabi {For nights}) Lambing: It's a bit like Cuddling I think Papak: Can't really translate this since rice isn't a staple in English speaking countries but it's something like eating leftovers :/ Gigil: Passive Cute aggression Pikon: Sore Loser Umay: If eye strain exist, then Umay is Taste Strain since by definition, this word is the feeling you get from tasting the same food so much that you feel sick if you have more. Kilig: Lovestruck (* Ish) Torpe: Amorous Introvertedness (Just made it up but I'm actually not sure what Torpe means so I'm basing on Buzzfeed's definition) Lihi: Pregnancy Cravings Well only one direct translation but oh well :P Here's another one: It's Illocano (A language close to Tagalog)and the word is 'Ngarud/Garud' (Like Nga in Taglog)

They did not translate those words. To translate means to give the exact counterpart of a foreign word to a different language. What they did is they described those words in manner that people could understand.

Here are other untranslatable Filipino words with no direct English equivalents which is also worth noting as well: 1.) Kapwa - the closest English word would be 'fellow human beings' in the sense of a spirit of brotherhood. It is often used when teaching young people about humanity. One theory suggests that it came from two simple words: Ka (words of association with) and Pwa (from the word 'puwang' or space). In essence, it means someone you share space with. 2.) Any words with Loob (pronounced lo-ob, not lube) with it. Loob in a metaphysical sense of being the 'inner self" which is the most inherent identity of the Filipino conscious well-being. Utang na loob - 'debt of oneself' It is an obligatory force to reciprocate the good deeds done on your behalf. Nahulog ang loob - 'to fall on oneself' An expression used when you fall in love with someone. Nagmagandang loob - 'to show the best of oneself' (a.k.a to be nice) but in a way that you are sincere in doing so with no hidden agenda or malice. Sakit ng loob - 'pain on oneself' an emotional pain experienced when someone you love has no 'utang na loob'.

Some corrections i want to make: _Tampo_ is both an *adjective* and a *verb* _Lambing_ is a *verb* _Papak_ is a *verb* _Gigil_ is an *adjective* _Torpe_ is an *adjective*

Cantonese! Lots of Cantonese phrases are so unique that can't be directly translated to any equivalent English words. I think the cultural differences is the one big reason of why it can't be translated. Will be thrilled if buzzfeed make a video about Cantonese!:)
