I just want to say how much i appreciate this. I didn’t grow up with any father figures and I’m honestly just trying to change a generational curse that’s been in my family for ever so I’m starting to change everything and I’ve been so stuck on what to wear, how to tie a tie, which hand to wear my watch on. It’s tough. I really appreciate this though.

My biggest take away from this was learning that "dress boots" still count as casual. I have definitely fell for the idea that they were actually more formal. Great video and extremely helpful

I love shoes. I don't know much about them, so I'm not qualified to call you out on missing this, or missing that. I just know what I like when I see it, and try to dress them appropriately. This was actually a greatly informative video for me. Thank you much, Antonio!
These videos are just incredible. My older brother (for some reason), always understood fashion. He never had to struggle to meet women. Such a natural. I'm learning this stuff for the first time. The explanations are so clear and memorable. They just remind me of how my brother dressed and how he always tried to drive it into my thick skull to learn these things. Even his tennis shoes were on point, and had a watch and cologne collection going at 20 years old. I'm just having a blast learning here Antonio.....and it's paying off!! Thank you!!
I can't stress how helpful your experienced advice is! I was just thinking about formality and different shoe types. Thank you for your efforts, Antonio!

I'm learning the lessons, that i should of learned from my father, from this gentle man. great video. Thank you.
Thanks for this post Antonio. I am an absolute "shoe guy" and also love single and double monks. I really appreciate your videos on men's style-helps me make important decisions about what to wear so people will perceive me the way I want them to.
I have to say I watched a few guys try to explain how men can get more stylish. You my friend have a gift, everything makes sense and you don't go on tangents. Keep up the good work!
Great video. Very informative. I’m 48 and wear suits 90% of the time and never stopped to consider the lacing system before. I will be on the look out now!

First of all huge fan. Secondly I would ask you to make a video about things that are not most prominent but important like wallet(should I place it in front pocket or back) or using a money clip. Tie knots.(how to vary length and width of the tie) Shoelaces ( how to tie them if too long) etc.
Awesome Video, Antonio ! This finally brought some light into the different kind of shoes. Also it inspired me to buy so Chelseaboots for the fall. I love your high quality content.
Opera Pumps/Court shoes are still the most formal footwear you can wear today, only worn with white tie and formal interpretations of black tie. Balmoral boots also deserves a spot since they are worn with full Morning Dress. Although it's nice to see someone like Antonio give new people a good introduction to formal footwear.

I find that most people I know take style so casually that wingtips would be considered extremely formal.

It depends where you live and the culture of that place. For example in UK people wear brogues on weddings with formal suits. So it's not taking style casually I think it's about the region and history of that region along with their culture and definition of scale of formality in that region and culture.
@mydogskips2
6 жыл бұрын
Not to show my ignorance too much here, but I actually thought full-brogue wingtips were the most formal shoe, not casual. I thought plain oxfords were exactly that, plain, rather dull and boring looking, not ornate enough, and as such they would be considered more casual. I do now appreciate why that's not really the case, but I still think to some degree wingtips can be, and widely are, considered a formal shoe. Maybe not in high-society, probably not, but they're not the group I hobnob with. In fact, where I live, just wearing shoes at all could be considered formal. ; ) And I'm not sure, but I bet if I asked my 11-year-old nephew which shoe looks more fancy, my black wingtips or plain oxfords, he'd probably say the wingtips, and he'd answer the same if I asked which was more formal, which I should wear to a social gathering.
@jko8888

There are certainly a lot of variations among cultures and regions. I think what impresses me more in terms of formality, is the care given to the shoes. I often notice guys wearing a very nice business suit and tie, but their shoes are scuffed and worn. A good polish along with a mirror shined heel and toe can make all the difference in terms of formality. The mirror shine especially can give a plain oxford an amazingly formal look. So don't think too much about what shoe you're wearing to a formal event, but definitely give it some care before you wear them there!

Good job sir, Antonio Great video. So much informative.
Your are an expert when it comes to shoes. excellent
Thanks for the video! I always thought that Whole cuts were the most formal, and the only reason Balmorals and Regular oxfords are more formal was only because of ease of availability and affordability.. Definitely learnt something new ! :) My personal favorite shoes are oxblood double monks and whole cuts. For all formal events i wear black oxfords, but tassel and penny loafers along with a great pair of driving shoes are my jam :D (I'm not much into boots though)

Fantastic list. Thanks for the affirmation cause i just bought a new pair of Black Cap toe Oxfords …

Really enjoyed this one!
Imho, the point of having a dress boot (balmoral/derby) is so you can still look dressy on snowy or rainy days. When you wear a well made balmoral boots, you will still looks like wearing a normal oxford shoes. Look at most balmoral boots, most of the top part of the upper made of suede so it looks like a sock. So dress boots are actually on the same level of formality with their low cut sister shoes.

Great video, even if I know most of those informations about shoes from your previous videos it's nice to have it in one video as a whole. I like examples you put to each type of shoes as there is by my opinion a thin line between what is appropriate and what is not.

This is exactly what we needed!
Thank You.... It was a really informative video :)
Interesting to learn more about shoes. Growing up in a blue-collar household, every shoe made of leather other than mocassins, boots and trainers was just called "classic shoe" and considered formal. While I believe that in today's supercasual world dominated by trainers and running shoes also brogues and Chelsea boots would make the cut as somewhat formal, it was still nice to get more insights on the topic.
great vid antonio!
Very helpful video thumbs up.
Definitely helped me out. Had no clue what made a dress shoe formal or casual.
Absolutely enlightening video
I love the breakdowns and the focus on a classic timeless look, but I wish you provided some visual examples for each.
great video. i work from home and i've mostly worn sneakers my whole life, i'm trying to upgrade here and i got some nice dress shoes without understanding what they were. good to know.
I ended up buying the black Medallion oxfords from Ace Marks and I love them! I'm amazed at how surprisingly comfortable they are! I also ended up wearing them when I went to Cincinnati to audition for America's Got Talent.

My late grandfather always have said, that gentlemen (real men at that) always live by the rules. And I get it! When dressing, he always used to check us to see whether we're in tact & proper bearing. And when he say, "Wear your clothes kiddo!," he means that you wear the right clothes that will match the occasion.
Another excellent video. I'm a huge Chelsea Boots fan. Even though you didn't specifically mention it (though it is in the Beatles photo you used), they look really good with suits!
I love that trivia about Stormtroopers wearing chelsea's.
I bought a pair of mid brown suede double monk straps last year and with out a doubt they are the most complimented shoes I own. They look great with jeans or chinos for a casual look.

Thanks Bee Boy! Do you agree with the list?
Antonio, a very good, informative video as always. But the level of formality depends also on the width of the sole, the size of the toebox and the form of the dress shoe, as the more round to be more casual and the more elongated (as all of the shoes of AceMarks you showed us) to be more dressy.
ONCE AGAIN GREAT PTS
Usefull guide of how to use your shoes fantastic video
Awesome. How shoes goes on from most formal to most casual, types of shoes, which one goes with what.... Amazing. got o learn so much. you nailed it.
Great video Antonio! Thanks for taking your time in making such a nice ranking! In this case, the casual oxford would be in level 10 also?
Great video, good explanation. I personally love Van Bommel shoes, they range from formal to more casual. They are really comfortable, too. I am a fan of Brogues myself. I wear size US13/UK12/EU46, so a more formal shoe makes my feet look really big. Or atleast, I think they do, because I'm looking down to a flat surface.
learned a lot, thanks.
Very imformative!!
Antonio, love your videos! i have some additional information on shoes for you. in many southeast asian countries, shoes with rubber sole could still be considered formal. because it rains more frequently here so rubber sole became a very common shoe build. its just practical, and no one will blame you for that. hope this helps!
Well put together. Gives a decent breakdown of dress shoe. I think I'll add the monkstraps in to my collection

I am pretty sure the chukkas he showed at the end are the exact clarks i have. Oh boy 😂. Thank you for the amazing video!
Thanks Antonio for another great video. I love monk shoes but always have trouble with finding some that fit, because I have an high instep. I've tried several brands but still the same problem. Other shoes and boots are ok, except for certain brands of Chelsea boots. David, 😎🌞🇬🇧
Good morning sir! I love the video. It has really helped me to identify which shoes I want for certain occasion's. However, as you're asking for a different opinion I'd like to add mine. I wanna put the dress boots and the number 6 spot instead of the Chelsea's. I think that the dress boot as a way of commanding attention when wearing it a suit but nuts to a very formal setting. For example in a simple business setting. A good way to show off without looking obnoxious.
I have all these shoes including the Chuckas, thanks to you and Alpha M!
Great video Antonio! Definitely looking at the Acemarks double monk strap for my next shoe. Would you say they’re sized similarly to an Allen Edmonds Strand 11D?
