10 Crazy Ways Prohibition Influenced America
Ойын-сауық
Well before the 1900s, a temperance movement had been slowly gaining steam, powered by many in the Bible Belt who felt that drinking alcohol led to an increase in immorality, and also that it was generally sinful in their book. With the help of World War I and a little bit of luck, the temperance movement managed to prohibit the sale of alcohol nationally.

Prohibition will never work. I always thought that Temperance workers were kind of crazy. Now that I am older, I have been rear ended twice by drunks while stopped at a traffic light, my best friend was killed by a drunk driver almost cutting him in half while he was on the shoulder of the freeway checking his trailer, and I volunteered 2 years at a homeless shelter, finding out that 75%+ are homeless because of alcohol. I now see where they got their zeal from. Their desire for a better life for all Americans was admirable. Their solution was unworkable. And, unfortunately, I don't know what the answer is.
I guess one of those other reasons for the candy industry flourishing would be that they had to do something with all the molasses and sugar that would’ve gone into making rum. Also, Prohibition led to one of Boston’s biggest tragedies - the molasses flood.

You can draw a direct line form the emergence of the temperance movement back to the Civil War, and its pretty basic as to why. Large numbers of veterans suffering from very real and painful physical wounds and sufferers of what we would now call PTSD (which society at the time called cowardice). With only opiates and alcohol to numb or control physical pain and mental anguish, it is no surprise that large numbers of veterans became addicted destroying themselves and their families. The impact on societal structure, particularly in the South, was pretty severe (CSA Vets were not provided services or pension obviously--except for a grave marker allowed in 1929). The temperance movement is a reaction to that damage. Much is often made of the so-called Bible Belt and its moral strictures leading to a temperance reactionary movement, and perhaps that is so, but then again perhaps having large number of alcoholic vets receiving no treatment or support might be just as significant. It's also noteworthy that the FDA is established (1906) during the emergence of this movement, also a reaction to the wide-spread distribution of some fairly strong and addictive drugs to the same veteran and general population. Very well done Simon, another interesting and thought provoking video from your team.
It also helped build JP Morgan's empire as the cars at that time could also run on moonshine, so he funded the suffrage movement so to keep everyone depending upon his gasoline.

tiki trash Pretty sure “evil weed” refers to marijuana. I don’t think tobacco is necessarily the problem, it’s what happens to your brain during addiction (and what the companies add to cigarettes). I only started a couple years ago, and in an effort to quit, I switched to e-cigarettes; so it was just nicotine and gradually lowered the nicotine level. Granted, even after getting to 0 nicotine, I was so habituated to it, I had a hard time quitting altogether - in fact it’s only been a few days since I haven’t had anything at all, and that’s mostly because the shops are closed due to COVID (won’t go to the trouble of ordering). But that should show you it’s more how your brain gets rewired than just the substance itself.

A bit of trivia - The San Antonio winery stayed in business during prohibition because they were one of the largest producer of Communion Wine for the Church
A few extra things: A) In heat of Depression, when Prohibition repealed, you had 100,000 quickly unemployed, trained Liquor Control agents, experienced in American law enforcement techniques, on the market. Some of these individuals went to work for the very mobsters they were pursuing, honing organized crime activity, that affected situation well into 1970's. (Things like how murders, highjackings, extortion, etc. were investigated and prosecuted aiding the organized criminal in how to beat the system.) B) Huge amounts of illegal money used, mostly in big cities, to influence politicians and steal elections. C) Huge amounts of money for organized crime to hire muscle and affect trade unions. (Jimmy Hoffa, etc.) D) Huge amounts of money that affected 1920's building boom, in part, a place for the upper tiered criminal to place money. (While not the full cause of the depression, some economists list the higher competition/lower profiting (with less amounts of investible illegal liquor cash) in late '20 as one factor of cash flow issues affecting aftermath of 1929 market crash. E) Increased value of wood pulp industry. Fresh off 'banning it' mindset, it was easy for Hearst and other journalists to vilify hemp (marijuana,) getting it strictly defined, and eliminating hemp-pulp's competition to wood pulp, thus increasing the value of the wood pulp industry. (As a matter of reality, agricultural grade hemp ('ditch weed') of virtually no recreational value, yet categorized the same as the strongest recreational grade hemps, showing it is the generic hemp plant, not the affect, target of legislation.)

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Prohibition is my all time favorite topic!
You forgot that it kinda led to the war on drugs. Although states were restricting the sale of cannabis before prohibition had started but when it was coming to an end, the federal government began to look into cannabis usage and in 1937, it had placed an excise tax which had effectively banned the sale at the federal level. And from there, it escalated.
3:34 actually, it went down after prohibition. It plateaued in around the 1950s but started to go up again in the 70s then it went down in the 90s.

When I was visiting Tunisia, I went with my friends to a restaurant for dinner. When I asked what kind of wines they had, the waiter informed me that they couldn't serve alcohol due to the fact that Tunisia was a majority muslim country. Then the waiter leaned over, and in a hushed tone whispered, "If you could move to a table in the back corner, I can serve you some cherry wine". To be discreet, they brought it over in a ceramic carafe, that they usually used to serve water. I noticed that there were also several locals already seated in that portion of the restaurant, all with the same ceramic carafes in front of them. Due to my curiosity, I later asked why muslims served other muslims alcohol in an Islamic country, is that not against their religion? Their response was, "Allah does not see so well at night".

Loved how a stock photo of a Nuns' graveyard was used during the 'methanol poisoning' segment of the clip! Although an intersting fact to take notice of.......the addition of methanol to alcohol wasn't started during prohibition, it was actually a CONTINUING practice that started at the turn of the century (well before the start of prohibition) in order to 'denature' industrial alcohol. The whole purpose of that was to exempt denatured spirits from the tax that would have otherwise have been imposed on them. It just so happened that the poisonings obviously became more common and prevalent during prohibition, when more and more people were turning to illegal sources. So strictly speaking, the government didn't start this practice during prohibition with the intent of poisoning people........it was just an unfortunately inevitable outcome of a greater number of people (as well as organised crime) resorting to denatured alcohol, which was always meant for industrial purposes. At worst, this was more or less an 'unintended consequence' as opposed to a diabolical poisoning plot.
@christelheadington1136

I think Simon had that in another video, sometime back.
@lexfacitregem

@@oldenweery7510 I was not implying that the goverment didn't poison liquor. It certainly did......the point I was making was not to say that alcohol wasn't poisoned, but that the motive and timeline involved in this event didn't really mesh up with historical reality. The 'poisoning' was more accurately referred to as 'denaturing' (which is actually still done today). It simply meant that the motive for adding the poison wasn't to intentionally kill those naughty people who ignored prohibition, but was done in order so that this liquor wouldn't be taxed as drinking alcohol, thereby saving the companies who needed to buy alcohol for industrial purposes tons of money. This practice began around 1910 or so (look up the history of denaturing alcohol). So the point I was trying to make wasn't that the government all of a sudden got the sinister idea to want to kill people who drank, it's just that due to prohibition, tons of denatured alcohol which was already available and normally used for industrial/chemical purposes were now being diverted by the bootleggers and sold onto the public. Trust me, I'm no fan of the government...but I'm also no fan of exaggerated or misinterpreted history.

Norway f. ex forbade all spirits, Beer and wine was still legal but highly regulated from aprox. 1919 to 1926. One of the worst ideas ever considered: attempting to use the law to force people to cease a behavior that had, up til then, been perfectly legal. This gave rise to powerful organized crime groups, imprisonment of otherwise law abiding people and a huge rise in theft and violence resulting from the buying and selling in the black market. Yet we still suffer these same issues, and for the exact same reasons. Prohibition still exists: the prohibition of drugs. It is easily arguable that the prohibition of drugs has caused much more harm due to the power of gangs gained by the black market in drugs, violence caused by the buying, selling and fight for market share by those gangs, the imprisonment of otherwise perfectly law abiding people and deaths due to the lack of health and safety oversight of drugs sold on the black market than all the harm possibly caused by the use of those drugs ever. If every drug from marijuana to heroin were legalized, the power of gangs and cartels would evaporate along with all the violence and corruption associated with them. Prison overcrowding would be a thing of the past. Theft committed by users would almost completely cease. Overdose due to unknown additives and unregulated strength would virtually disappear. Government revenue would improve dramatically thanks to the new taxability of drug sales and the cessation of expenditures enforcing an unwinnable "war" on drugs. As exemplified by pre-prohibition useage statistics plus those from the few countries that have legalized all or nearly all, drugs, use would not jump dramatically. A small portion of the monies spent on enforcement and incarceration could be redirected to education and rehabilitation. As long as society continues to buy into the fear mongering of certain parts of the population and continue to remain ignorant of the lessons learned from the prohibition of alcohol, we will all continue to suffer from the ludicrous policy of a war on drugs.

If they keep trying to do this with guns today, it won't be nearly as easy and in the end, people who would rather keep their guns will leave or fight back rather than roll over like they did with alcohol.

Ummm ... apparently, the whole point is that people did *not* 'roll over' with alcohol prohibition ...

@@MegaOverEasy yeah, being bitches in a hidden bar doesn't qualify as doing anything except rolling over. Funny how the people getting threatened to have their guns taken are going out with them and saying go ahead and try. THATS what it means to not roll over. Do you know anything about fighting for your rights instead of cowering in a corner like a coward?

@@trinitychambers8123 You also know nothing about courage. It is braver to face the world unarmed, than to cower in a corner, armed to the teeth, threatening to kill any who come near. The problem with gun worshippers is their fear makes them dangerous.
...as for the women that were involved in prohibition...yeah...that's a heck of a lot of murder and blood on their hands...
