I still remember, when I's a minor child, asking my father where's Ceylon, he said it's the "current" Sri Lanka, and explained it to me as it's like India/Bharat, when Europeans kept it occupied & called it as Ceylon... (Though India's still "mentioned" anyway). His such simple/naive explanation was enough for a class-One student I reckon.

Did not mention countries like Tanganica, Zanzibar (both joint to form Tanzania). Also Republic of Upper Volta and not to forget you barely mentioned Tibet. Of course, there are many more that I am not aware. Again..... too short your list, but appreciate your effort.

Ceylon is weird in this list. That country only changed it's name. There are more examples like that. And come to think of it, a lot of current states were once part of a country that no longer exists. Mexican Empire, greater Colombia, the Kingdom of Holland or it's predecessor the Batavian Republic. UK was once England, Wales, Scotland. The Roman Empire, Yugoslavia, East and West Germany, but before that the German Empire, or before that the Holy Roman Empire. Tanganyika, Zanzibar, etc etc etc

In the 19th century there were 2 "khanates" in Central Asia which were descended from the Great Mongol Empire. These were the khanates of Bukhara and Kokand. The khanate of Bukhara ruled the fabled city of Samarkand. When the Russians began expanding into Central Asia in the mid-19th century the British tried unsuccessfully to establish alliances with these 2 khanates. They became Russian protectorates and were abolished after Czar Nicholas II was overthrown and the Communists came to power. Today much of the former Khanate of Kokand is part of Uzbekistan.

You didn't mention Hawaii. Also Vermont wouldn't have desired to join "Canada" in the 1780's, since that simply referred to a single colony that includes an area that is now the southern portions of Ontario and Quebec up to 1791 when they split into Upper Canada and Lower Canada; perhaps you meant "British North America" which was all of the British possessions north of the U.S.A. and New Spain. It wasn't a very serious proposition anyways.

The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth! Burgundy! Danzig? Also many Italian provinces have been independent states for a significant length of time. Every nation in Europe has historic divisions and 'proto'-states, but Italy arguably moreso.

@@aspiringeyecandy4856 I would say that Biafra counts as a country the same way that the Confederate States of America existed as a country. Both caused a war the moment they were "born," were at war the entire time they existed, and ceased to exist when they were crushed. Poor Biafra.

Vermont didn't want to join the US originally and instead attempted to join Canada because of the close ties it had to Quebec since Vermont used to be a French colony, even today there are places in Vermont where french is used in daily life but French remains the second most spoken language in Vermont.

Hungrians didn't want Austro-Hungrian Empire. They were occupied by the Austrians, and fought for their independence. It was half-succesful. They stuck in a dual-monarchy and then WWI came and you know the rest of the story

Well hungary alone was multinational, in 17 century they got beaten up by ottomans, only northen part survived (slovakia). Slovakia was then connected to austria and so the hungary, few centuries later austria made the deal with hungary called austrio-hungarian settlement, also there has been historical part called bohemia which is czech republic today so no, it was not combination of two countries
