Hi Joie, this was a great video. If only it had been around when I was starting out! My worst buy was the Crafter's Companion Ultimate Pro, I wanted to make gift boxes but soon discovered many videos showing one how to make them simply by cutting/scoring. I had all the add ons that one could buy for it... and they all got replaced by better tools. In the end I gave it away to someone who was just starting out so they could have a go without spending any money. My best buy has been my paper trimmer, it's robust and has a range of interchangeable blades that can do scoring, decorative edges, perforations etc. I wouldn't be without it.

This was very informative, thank you. I thought you were a seamstress because of the beautiful seams you sew on your artwork. I have owned four sewing machines in my lifetime. (actually made my wedding dress) I am without one because I handed mine down to my granddaughter. I just need a small one so that will be my next purchase. Continued joyful journal journeys for you! I so enjoy your presentation style. 🦋 🌸 🌻 🐦 🪴.

Good fabric scissors are super expensive, but they will last a lifetime if you keep them away from paper. Did you realize you can get a scoring blade for your Fiskars cutter? That would eliminate the need for your wooden score board, but it might not be as satisfying. Sometimes the sensory satisfaction makes a tool worth keeping. This is a great video, Joie. You are a natural teacher.

Hi Joie, Great video. Agree with all the tools as basics and or game changers. As a seamstress I would recommend a second hand sewing machine from a specialist dealer. They don’t cost much either and you can get a few lessons to get starting and they do repairs on the sewing machine if you need. Like you said, buy a mechanical one and you can’t go wrong and these are much longer lasting. The quality of the thread you use can make your life easy or difficult, the more expensive brands like guterman, are made of longer fibers and don’t break easily. The cheaper brands split, break and leave more fuzz inside your sewing machine, so you have to clean it. Oops, I could go on. I won’t, but a sewing machine is a spend and you can grow to love it, if it’s a good one or put it away and dread it, if it is disfunctional. Much love, Maud

Thank you. I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate and this was not only helpful, but validating. I have been a quilter for many, many years and have been adapting my tools to making journals and ephemera. Example: I've been using quilter's rulers and a rotary cutter. However, I just ordered a paper trimmer because I realized I need even better accuracy. And, I'm sure there are other comments, but fabric scissors and paper scissors need to be kept and used separately. Thank you again.

This is really good advice - I’ve been junk journalling for a while and I’ve bought some really faddy stuff that I’ve only used once or twice. I have a problematic relationship with using book pages (I do it, but it has to be something I have no emotional tie to, even though I’ve got a lot of gorgeous, slowly ageing books - I’ve even bought modern replacements for my favourites so I don’t damage them further!) . I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the Rupert Annual pages in your journal 😱. My parents bought it for me every year when I was a child, I bought my own when they said I was too old and now my husband buys it for me every year - some how the colours, pictures and rhymes have always sung out to me. I’m 70 this year, so that’s 69 Annuals tucked away safely from scissor wielding hands!

I have a mini guillotine paper trimmer that use often. But I found a Fiskars Procision Rotary Bypass Trimmer 12 inch at a Ross (discount store in the US) for only $20 ($14.17£)! One if the best buys I've found as I've not seen them less then around $89 & most list for more. Besides making junk journals I also create assemblage art & some mixed media. This paper cutter will cut through thin cardboard/chipboard, fabric, foam board & of course paper. But I have to say the best thing about it is it has a self sharpening blade!

Really handy video Joie, thank you. I'm guilty of impulse buying after watching videos! That needle is actually an upholstery needle. I got a set and find the 'circular ' needles brilliant for Coptic stitching. Paper blunts the blades so best having separate ones. I love my rotary trimmer for fabric. I'm ready to upgrade my sewing machine to make clothes but love sewing paper. Yes, that eyelet setter is fantastic lol same eyelets too! May i suggest food colouring for an incredibly cheap way to watercolour and dying papers as they're very concentrated. Thank you for your helpful advice. Have a great week 💖
