Lovely video. I get most of my craft supplies at three thrift stores in my area. You wouldn't believe the big bag of stuff I got today for $11. Two art/pattern books with tags on the back from a book store for $24.99 each, a 12 x 12 book of paper, lace, fabric, 9 stamps, thread, bias tape, a pack of fabric that goes in your printer and 3 vintage doilies.

Totally agree. I'm on disability so my income is limited. Anything I buy past paint and paper is very carefully considered. But I think it makes me depend on my eye and skills more, as well as making my work more unique.

The best cost saving tip I have is go to local thrift shops on a regular basis. They sell books for 3/$1.00 or I've hit sales where they are 10 cents each. That's when you can stock up on all kinds of books. You can also sign up for their reward cards. Then they send you coupons for money or a percentage off your next purchase. Love all your ideas Joie! I love your videos too.

I agree! I wanted some Mulberry paper and it’s very expensive so didn’t buy it. I looked at my local charity shop and there was a small journal filled with blank Mulberry paper as the pages. I felt like I won the lottery! 😊

I've noticed lately when I'm crafting, I use more and more junk mail for background substrates, letters, words and images. Plus, the books I've collected over the years. They really do make great tools to make your own ephemera. It certainly helps with creativity! This is such a great video and wonderful tips!

Good to see someone making these types of suggestions instead of using the department store or on-line sources to make journals or whatnot. I've been using food dies to dye my papers, just get a small spray bottle, fill with water, a couple drops of food die, and a few drops of alcohol (so it doesn't go bad) and you can spray whatever.

Hello Joie! The tip that resonated most with me the most is using children's art supplies. One of my favorites is $1 watercolors. I use them instead of dyes to make colored book pages or backgrounds. A new one that I'm delighted with is bingo markers. I purchased a package of 8 from Amazon for $9. Thank you for your inspirational videos 🌹

Yes, gotta love free and cheap, it's very satisfying! Yes buying in bulk helps, that's a good weight for die/silhouette cutting too. Oh those papers sound so cool 😎. I've just done a batch of dying and will bubble print when they're dry. 🙊 gratuitous crunch, love it. Digitals are very cost effective and no extra storage needed. Yes I bought a good brand trimmer and its awful 🙈. I think a guillotine would be more accurate? In printer settings you can put the exact measurements but nothing wrong with the odd cut off bits. I love my kids water soluble crayons too. New products are dangerous lol . Great tips😁.Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖

Joie, Loved this video! Great tips for getting the best out of our budgets. I've made some packing paper with the gold paint, and it is beautiful. I can't wait to try additional colors. Using watercolors has been fun, too. By no means am I an artist, however the watercolors play has been fun, and I really liked the outcome. Thank you for sharing with us!

Great video my friend. This will be especially helpful for newbies in the junk Journal World. I saw so many of my little elements from magazines and even from catalogs. When the paper is very flimsy I back it with my copy paper. I think the digitals that you got from Anthony look very helpful. I also find things on public domain sites that don't cost anything except the ink to print them. It takes a little more time but being retired I have lots of time and I enjoy the hunt

A few other things to look out for: greeting cards one has either received or found in a thrift store. Using a circle punch can crop images in interesting ways, for example. I just bought a 50s era greeting card with beautiful butterflies for 15 cents at a small town thrift store. Tags from clothing are often thick cardboard and have a prepunched hole. I cover with paint or ink or texturing materials. Product packaging can be cool. A friend gave the box a bar of Danish chocolate cake in with purple stylized foxes and octopi on it.

There are literally thousands and thousands of free images online, and tons of websites dedicated to sharing them. Because they are public domain images, it means anybody can use and print and copy them in any way for any purpose. It's where most Digi kit producers get their own images from. I'll search for free before buying a kit. Plus you can download and print ANY image you find online, (obviously not illegal images like child porn obviously! Not that we'd use that subject for a journal anyway, but I mentioned it before some bright spark pipped up with some comment to contradict me using the word ANY!!!) But, yes, you can print ANY image for making an item for yourself or for a friend, or just to practice with....even if it's private photos of someone's wedding or your next door neighbour's dog or work colleague's holiday snaps! It could be a branded product even! . People get very nervous about copyright issues, and the reason we are scared of anything is lack of information. Crafter's videos are full of comments from people talking about "what they've heard" or what their interpretation of copyright means, and people read it and pass on the same Chinese whispers as though they're "informed". They are not. You'll get people saying they've been a district attorney or criminal lawyer since they emerged from the womb....and???? Still means nothing! Ask any solicitor or lawyer how many cases of copyright issues they've either taken on, which will firstly be very few, and out of those how many were successful....and you'll get a big fat zero! Obviously I'm not talking about some cola manufacturer having an almost identical logo to Coca Cola and bottling their drink in identical bottles! That's a whole different ball game. But the key to those types of cases is PROFIT! And an element of fraud. . For your average crafter at home, even SELLING lots of handmade journals, no one would know if a digital image was bought and paid for in a Digi kit, or whether you printed the image straight off Pinterest! For example, the first journal card you held up, with the little sailor boy, I have that image in a beach Digi kit I bought from ArtyMaze (I think it was hers I bought, don't know now, got it years ago) but being that it's likely an old public domain image in the first place, no doubt it appears in multiple seller's Digi kits anyway! I could have it from store A and you could have it from store B. Store A may be 100% certain you didn't buy HER Digi kit from her store, but how can she then automatically leap to the conclusion that you obtained HER kit fraudulently? Public domain images are in the public domain for a reason, therefore many many artists the world over could include that same image in their kits! . Then you have to factor in what anybody stands to gain or lose by you adding that one image, on one journal card, in one 100-page journal that you've sold. Let's say you sell that journal for £100... technically then you've made £1 per page. If you had sneakily printed the image off the internet instead of buying it as part of a kit, then that one image only forms a small fraction of that page, so all you made from that image is pennies. Minus the cost of your time, your ink and paper and electric and glue... who's going to pay thousands to sue one person making some hobby money at home, for the 1p's worth of image you "stole"? Bearing in mind also that they don't "own" that image in the first place anyway! . For that reason, pretty much no images online are "off limits" when it comes to people crafting one-off items in their own home, it's only when big corporations can prove substantial loss of earnings through copycat logos etc that anybody would even think to sue someone for it. This goes for ALL those crafters who put their videos and photos of their projects over Facebook, Instagram, KZread and their own websites too. Many will say it's wrong to print this or that image, yet they have that exact image in multiple social media posts! Copyright is not limited to printed images, it's publishing in any form that makes it a copyright issue, yet how many KZreadrs are sued for images in their posts...🤔 Again, none! Because the main element of copyright lies in OWNERSHIP! Exactly like you suggesting this wild flower book or that botany illustrated guide etc. Some will say they won't even use book pages in journals for fear of copyright.....why not? You OWN the book right? You could roll the pages up into firelighters, wallpaper your lounge with them, or wipe your arse on them if you wish to! It's YOUR book. Same with wallpaper, napkins, wrapping paper, packaging - if you OWN the item, you can do what you like with it! And the same goes for these craft companies who say their products are "THEIRS" exclusively. No, Bud! If I buy a rubber stamp from a company I can stamp it on every item I make as many times as I wish to! I bought that stamp! What did they presume I was going to do with a rubber stamp if not stamp images with it??? 🙄 . And finally, most Etsy sellers have some vague jargon on each listing that by purchasing their Digi kit you agree to adhere to certain rules. Hate to break it to you sellers but that has zero weight to it and is embarrassing to include. Not knowing the ins and outs of copyright law is nothing to be ashamed of, trying to pretend you do by holding people to a contract by way of Etsy purchase is ridiculous. For example "you agree to print no more than 250 times for using in an item you intend to sell"..... ambiguous to say the least! Can't print the kit more than 250 times, or can't include the digitals in more than 250 items for sale? Can you print the kit 250 times, and then use a small piece of each page or one item of embellishments to spread the kit across thousands of made items for sale??? Which is it? 🤔 You can't sum up a legal contract in a couple of sentences because you devalue your own "contract" by leaving it so open to interpretation! . Lastly and most importantly, it's called COPYRIGHT for a reason. You cannot replicate the item and claim it as your own design! I heard of that napkin company saying someone decoupaging a tag with a napkin they sell, is against copyright? 🤣 How? They bought those napkins they can do what they want with them! They can't claim they MADE them, they can't claim they DESIGNED the image, they can't start producing their own napkins with that image on and pretending to be that brand....but they can do what they like with napkins they've bought! Even if they bought a job lot of 10,000 identical napkins and stuck them in 10,000 or more journals! . There's a whole ton more to copyright laws than I've briefly tickled on here, but that's the gist of it... It's not about products per se, but claiming somebody else's work originated from yourself. I mean otherwise, Edith Holden's descendents would have nailed all of our arses to a door, right? So don't let fear or intimidation make you feel you have to buy Digi kits in the first place. They're lovely to own and have someone who sourced them all into one kit for you, but don't be fooled into paying a fortune for a vintage kit mostly packed out with free images anyway! There's no end to free images available out there, and you don't have to have fancy software or a degree in digital design to tweak those images, from sizing, cropping, sepia effects, flipping an image back to front, adding text, printing at 30% opacity to print whole page background images that can be written over etc. . As said in the video...spend money on essentials or specials sure. But get creative for FREE where you can. Time spent on yourself is much more beneficial than money spent elsewhere! 😘 EDIT*** just read this back and wanted to clarify me saying YOU or THEY etc is not directed at "you" specifically 😊 nor anyone specific at all. Just wanted to make that clear. I was just adding the tip of "free images" to go with your tips....and addressing the dreaded issue of copyright those kinds of things stir up usually in comments. Especially for newbies with barely any supplies or knowing what they can or can't print. 😁

@@joiedefi thank you that's good! I tend to overexplain myself, but with typed comments you never know when someone will jump down your throat or take something the wrong way! Just this morning I typed a teeny comment on a newborn baby video, like, "aww what a beautiful baby boy"....and someone came at me with: "how f%cking dare you presume this baby's gender!" 😳 I mean seriously??? Even saying something nice is wrong these days! 😂 So yeah, when I explain something, in my mind I can imagine the potential replies I'll get, so try to take care of them while I'm at it, to prevent back and forth arguments and someone feeling offended over nothing! . Lately I'm much more drawn to channels like yours. People who are genuinely creative and turn nothing into something. When I first started crafting, particularly journals and that sort of thing, like most people I bought a whole ton of crap and thought I needed this or that tool or brand. Grabbing things because they were only a pound or two and were such a bargain! No, they were ugly, not a bargain! 😜 We've all done it though, right? And my philosophy is EXACTLY what yours is, spend as much as you want to....but ONLY on what you NEED and only after you've looked everywhere else to find the best VALUE for your money. Like you, I mainly buy bulk packs of base paper and card, and glue. I rarely buy anything else now. I get a thrill from finding a beautiful old book from a charity shop or a chunk of old crocheted lace or something. I've lost interest in a lot of crafters I watched initially, because they're not really "creating" things... they're more "assembling" ready made craft supplies, like a production line. With you, you take basics and actually create the designs and styles and decoration of the pieces. It's more organic, more artistic, and you're really putting something of yourself in things you make. I find that much more inspirational and motivational. Natasha from Treasure Books works the same way! I swear she could take roadkill and make it into something beautiful! It's a bit cliché to say, but for want of a better quip, you both "think outside the box" and I like that. . Btw... don't know if you know, but The British Library has a mountain of images free online. A couple of years back they made the decision to scan every single image in every single book they have....😳 I mean, not a small task at all! 🙄 So yeah, if you search The British Library, their images are all hosted on....oh bloody hell the word just sipped out my head.... I'm sure it starts with F. Anyway, this "F" website hosts all their images, and you can type in any search term to see what matches. They've scanned lots of whole book pages too, as well as the images. Tip: the F website has a search bar at the top.... BUT....there is a smaller search bar just above the actual British Library section, so search in that bar, that already has the British Library at the start of the search term. That way you'll stay searching within their images...which are shared freely! The F website hosts many image collections from a large range of sources, so if you search in the main bar at the top, it will match ALL images stored on their entire site, not just those within the British Library. Some of the other sources may NOT be free in that sense, although many are also. But I know the British Library's images definitely are. Hope that made sense! It's gonna wind me up now that I cannot think of the host site's name! I have to look now! 😂 And I know it's going to be such a simple name! But it just literally shot out of my head! I'll go look and when I find it I'll edit this to add the link for you. 😘 xxxxx ................. EDIT.............. Aaarrggghhh it's *FLICKR* how could I not think of that! Anyway here's a bit of info...... We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of. I have had nice home color ink jet printers when I was a graphic designer but as they've reached their end of lives, I've not replaced them, instead just getting a decent black laser. Ink jets are too expensive for my current needs and they're only getting more so as more move to subscription based functionality. For the money I'd spend printing stuff out, I can make judicious purchases of new or used print material. It's actually kind of amazing how much one can find when on a constant look out for stuff.
