10 Best Child Bike Seats (We Tested them ALL!)

We've tested just about every child bike seat out there with our own babies, toddlers, and kids. Here are the 10 best child bike seats, broken down by FRONT mounted and REAR mounted.

CHILD BIKES SEATS - REAR
(1) Bellelli Pepe
amzn.to/4cOWNNj
With tons of ventilation, high sideboards for better containment, and a sliding footrest height adjustment, the Pepe is both comfy and safe.
The Pepe is unique because it has shoulder straps that can be moved low enough to securely accommodate a 12-month old. Additionally, with three shoulder strap height adjustments, there’s plenty of room for growth.
(2) Burley Dash
snp.link/4fb8c2f7
Durable and well-designed for a very fair price point, the Dash bike seats have two unique features that set them apart from the competition. 1) Rear Storage Pocket 2) The 5 point harness system adjusts to allow you to place the buckle lower or higher on your child’s chest according to your preference.
(3) Topeak BabySeat II (Rack mount only)
amzn.to/36lvTeI
If you know that your bike doesn’t work with a frame mounted seat and you need a rack mounted seat, the Topeak BabySeat II is the ONLY seat we know of that actually comes with a rack.
(4) Thule Yepp Maxi
amzn.to/3pfLR2m
Made from Crocs-like seat material with 56 ventilation holes in the back of the seat!
The foam material of the shoulder pads is slightly grippy and helps keep them in place.
(5) Hamax Caress
amzn.to/38vAwW7
Our favorite feature is the shoulder straps which can be set by sliding the entire back of the seat up and down. If you have a 12 month old or a petite toddler, the Hamax is a great choice if you prefer a rear mounted seat.
One thing to note about the Hamax is that the shoulder straps are set more narrowly than every other seat we’ve tested, which makes it less comfortable for kids 4 and older.
(6) Thule RideAlong (Frame mount only)
amzn.to/3VYwb6z
The Thule RideAlong is their most high-end, cream-of-the-crop seat. The harness is the standout feature for the RideAlong. The wide, sturdy back-pack style straps stay in place better than any other straps we’ve tested, and are insanely easy to adjust.
The blue color coding system of the Thule RideAlong makes this seat pretty fool proof. Anything on the seat that can be adjusted is blue.
The RideAlong Mini is the front-mounted version of this seat, and it’s just as awesome.
BABY BIKE SEATS - FRONT
(7) Peg Perego Orion
amzn.to/3UawBW6
While not as high-quality as the other seats we recommend, we really appreciate its unique mounting system that works for bikes with little or no room on the headset for a mounting bracket.
(8) Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini
amzn.to/3xxIe0w
Weather resistant foam core and a soft, dense foam seat cushion, the Mini is expertly crafted and also the lightest seat we’ve tested!
We love the Mini’s unique two-handed, child-proof magnetic safety buckle. It’s completely impossible for a toddler to undo on their own and clicks in place heartily.
(9) Mac Ride and Kids Ride ShotGun
amzn.to/3sXf1VJ
amzn.to/36jIoaz
Consisting of just a saddle and a footrest, these seats take up very little space on the bike. One of the major advantages of these seats is that you can ride with your child in front of you until they are 4 or 5, while standard front mounted seats max out around 3 years old.
Be aware you always need to check for compatibility with your own bike before you purchase any child or baby bike seat.
0:29 Rear Mounted Seats
0:39 Bellelli Pepe - Best on a Budget
1:24 Burley Dash - Unique Harness and a Storage Pocket!
2:10 Topeak BabySeat II - Comes with a rack! (Rack mount only)
2:46 Thule Yepp Maxi - Fantastic Ventilation!
3:28 Hamax Caress - Great Fit for the Youngest Riders
4:15 Thule RideAlong - Best Shoulder Straps and Overall Easiest to Use (Frame mount only)
5:20 Front Mounted Seats
5:34 Peg Perego Orion - Best on a Budget AND Most Likely to Fit Your Bike
6:12 Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini - Most Lightweight and Easy to Use
7:04 Mac Ride and Kids Ride ShotGun

Great! Thanks for the amazing review. It really helps a lot? I'm not sure I will be able to see/touch first hand the seats (I'd probably have to purchase online) so I would like to ask you about the Caress and Ride Along. Are the bottom padding removable in both? (In the ridealong it looks like it's a whole piece with the back padding). How would you compare the reclining features of the two and the head/helmet recess? My main concern with my actual (cheap) baby bike seat is the wobbling head of my daughter when falling asleep and I would like to eliminate the problem (hamax looks easier and smoother to recline looking at your videos but also shorter and less spacious for the head). Judging from your reviews the hamax looks super comfortable and easy to use but those tight belts on the neck sure look bad. Plus the fact the adjusting the height "opens" the back of the seat (short child always exposed to air flow while taller one not?!?!). My daughter is just turning 2 (she's a little bigger then average, nothing outrageous haha) and I would like to have a seat that does a proper job both immediately then in the next future (I would when she gets to big to just switch to the trailer)... Sorry for the huge message but your in depth reviews answer questions that later turn into more questions hahaha

The seat padding on the RideAlong is removable, the Hamax is not. If you are planning on using the seat longer term, the RideAlong is a better bet given the more narrow placement of the Hamax straps. We have individual video reviews for both of these, as well as full written reviews on our website. Those will both provide significantly more information. www.twowheelingtots.com/thule-ridealong-child-bike-seat-review/ www.twowheelingtots.com/hamax-caress-rear-bike-seat-review/

If you have a "men's style" bike with a flat top bar, it honestly can be pretty difficult! Getting on or off next to a wall or bench where you can lean the seat against it is what we usually do. Another great method is to load up next to a curb so you are several inches higher than normal. That makes it much easier to swing your leg over.

Seeing those big kids in the front seats gives me anxiety 😆 They are used in the Netherlands from the age the child can sit on his own (around 5 months I think?), some of the babies in it are tiny. The oldest in it are usually maybe 12-18 months? And then move to the rear seat 😂 Of course children up to 3 fit in the front seat, but it's mostly used for babies. I'm a childminder of a 12 month old, and I'm looking into rear seats. I find the front seat annoying anyway, I have to make quite a bit of speed to get on the seat with enough balance (at least that's what it has felt like for me, but I've only used them on the bikes of the parents I mind, so it's not my own, which also doesn't help probably).

You can read our full review of that seat here: www.twowheelingtots.com/weeride-kangaroo-bike-seat-review/

@@Twowheelingtotsbikes Thanks for that, and aware that US hasn't got a standard for front seats. But EU, Australia etc do, and just thought safety would be the first thing you would test. And even if not experts, a seat with very little protection or restraints, though great fun, would clearly be compromising safety. Hence why it wont meet standards. There is a definitely a market for the Mac Rides and KRS, but it isnt the same as the other baby / child seats you review and just felt the safety angle should have been a focus. Thanks for reply anyway

I know some can fit on ebikes. Here some (well known) brands in my country (Netherlands): Bobike, Yepp, Urban Iki, Qibbel Air. Not all of their seats will fit, but most rear seats of these brands seem to? As far as I can tell from their websites. I don't know, I've just bought an ebike, and am now searching the internet which brand I'll choose. I'm going to be buying it second hand probably, they are used so much here, it's quite easy to find a seat that still looks decent (especially with the well known ones bobike and yepp). Good luck!

I'd be careful with the statement that Thule is the best company you can invest in. I've bought their most expensive trailer and it started falling apart within 1year, with stuff like brake screws falling off, never glued properly in the factory. It's been 4 weeks of the warranty processing and will take at least 6 more. Absolutely outrageous for a company charging such prices for their products. Also bear in mind the prices of the spare parts are insane,

We appreciate you sharing your experience! We have tested and owned many, many Thule products over the years and have never had an issue similar to this. That said, no product or manufacturing process is perfect, so it sounds like you got a real doozy. We're sorry it's such a pain!! Is this the Thule Chariot Sport you're referring to?

@@Twowheelingtotsbikes Yeah, I've just learned that after 5 weeks since the case started they are only picking it up from a shop, so in total I'll be at least 7-8 weeks without it. For no reason. Had I known it I'd fix it myself.

Yeah, that sounds a bit ridiculous. Sounds like they should just replace it so you don't miss more riding time. It's expensive enough that you certainly can't just go out and by another trailer to tide you over until this one is fixed. :-(

@@Twowheelingtotsbikes exactly and that wouldn't be even that bad.. if not the fact that this chariot is the only place where my toddler sleeps during the day, so we struggle everyday without it. I've had other products from Thule before, they are ok but not really standing out. Chariot has a good competition too. And so have the bike seats. Having seen the attitude of their customer service, I'll think twice before buying anything from them
