10 "Average" Games Better Than Their Review Scores!

Ойындар

I was going through my collection in GameEye recently and noticed that a lot of the games I really enjoy are sitting at what I'd consider an 'Average' score from Metacritic - somewhere between a 60-80, a solid D or C student.
And it got me thinking that...man. These critics got it all wrong. Here's 10 games on 10 different consoles that are a far cry better than their review scores would indicate.
Let me know any average games you might be a fan of that you think the critics got it all wrong on!

Robotron does have twin stick functionality if you plug in a second controller. Its one of a handful of n64 games with dual analog support. It was wild to find that out as a huge n64 fan decades later

There are so many truly great 7/10 games, and like you say, a handful reviews that didn't rate a game can devestate a Metacritic score.

I also enjoyed TMNT Hyperstone Heist partly because this was either the 1st or 2nd Beat 'em Up game I've ever played in my life as a kid for the Sega Genesis (the other Beat ' em Up being Streets of Rage 2 of course.). This was before I was eventually introduced to Turtles in Time on the SNES but I still enjoy Hyperstone Heist regardless.

Scott and I are on opposite sides of the TMNT camp, although It's the difference of splitting hairs. He was a Genesis kid growing up and I was an SNES kid. Shocked that Hyperstone heist is ranked that low. The game for me that ranks of average that I can't understand is Days Gone. 71....geez but that might have been from it being a bit broken at launch.

I think Hyperstone Heist gets dinged more because Turtles in Time is probably the best beat em up on the SNES, while Hyperstone Heist has Streets of Rage II looming over it. Other than that, it's a solid TMNT game if taken on its own.

Ok, so it's been said: I had a Genesis, and personally I could not have been more disappointed with TMNT: THH. It just didn't have the scaling effects and other things that we 90s kids got addicted to in the arcades; this was one I could not see as anything but a cheap imitation of what my SNES friends had in their homes. Even today, it's like dude, why play a game that isn't as good? To each their own, but I've passed on that game for 30+ years and would tell new fans to do the same. It's Diet Coke compared to TIT's Coke Classic, IMO.

I don't agree that game review scores pair up perfectly with letter grades. I tend to think of 30/100 (or 3/10) as a failure, 40 as shaky but almost passable, and 50 as average.

TMNT Hyper Stone Heist deserves at least a 90 overall. It's way better than the TMNT Turtles in time on Snes. I'll give you main reasons why it's better. On the Genesis version you get different endings when you beat this on any difficulty setting. On Snes you have to beat the game on the hardest setting to see the ending, otherwise it says why not play on a harder difficulty setting when you beat the game on easy &b normal. Another reason why it's a lot better than the Snes are the controls &b the gameplay. This goes for every Genesis title that has a muti plat game with the Snes. The games play really smooth & precise accuracy. On the Snes games play awful with their controls if it's 3rd party games.

Nothing wrong with TMNT hyperstone heist, i only saw 90% scores here in the uk, whoever thinks its a bad game must be dumb. Easily as good as the super nintendo game and ive played both hundreds of times.

I don't know how people can hate hyperstone heist the one I hate is turtles in Time like hyperstone heist is the perfect Ninja turtle game that plays perfect it's got the right amount of levels whereas turtles in times way too long and way too hard unless you play it on easy no one wants to play 10 levels. Hyperstone heist only has five levels but there well balanced. it's an unpopular opinion I know. Not to mention turtles in time is just too long and it gets old

Star Fox 64... it's the best game on N64, none compare. All others were outclassed many times by their own series or genre (Golden Eye is slayed by modern FPS) ... only Star Fox 64 reigns supreme in its genre ... no other N64 game can even begin to compare. WAY Better than perceived by people. Star Fox 64. All the way #1 pick in this category. Suikoden 1 is the best in the series but sure 2 had cool graphics and the full advantage of knowing everything about the playsatation vs being a launch game development cycle in the 1st ... also = Final Fantasy 2 (famicom) is a true gem!

the reason turtles in time is better is the color palette... nowhere does the SNES dominate the Genesis more than in color palette. Period. Sound? YEs but it's not the domination that colo is. Some songs with bass and synth sound amazing on genesis challenging the fun of snes tunes... but colors its just SNES crushing its competitor

75+ is a very high rating, with 50 being average....all these 78/79 games are just universally acclaimed games...i enjoyed the video regardless, but the whole premise is just super flawed.

  • @SquarePegs

I don't necessarily agree with you. When you look at games like Sackboy - there's some 100's that spike it's rating, but the majority of reviews put it at a 70 or below with most saying how it's uninspired and not creative. Games like Baten Kaitos at a 78 had some high 80s scores, but most reviews drop it back down for the cardinal sin of apparently being a remake. They aren't universally lauded, which is why on a grading scale they come out as average or slightly above (D-C+ in terms of school grades). You don't have to agree, that's certainly in your purview, but this wasn't a half-assed idea - I dug in on each review and did my research. :)
