Animated villains are great. They give conflict for our heroes and watching their ludicrous plans out before us is always a treat. But what if those villains we always thought were evil were actually more in the right than we thought? Many villains are actually misunderstood and chastised by society, resulting in characters who can get a bit extreme. Take Hades for example, from Hercules. He ended up getting a really lame job despite him being a god. Everyone else gets to live on Olympus but Hades lives out his life in the underworld with the dead. Poor guy. Lotso from Toy Story 3 was just looking out for the other toys while Sid in the first film had no idea he was inflicting any harm. To him, the toys were just plastic. Plus his upbringing was definitely questionable. Syndrome from the Incredibles just wanted everyone to have superpowers after being shut down by the lead character while Maleficent just wanted to be included. Gaston from Beauty and the Beast actually just wanted to marry Belle and when she was taken, brought a mob together to get her back. Sure, he was a giant tool, but at least he wasn’t holding a girl against her will and throwing violent tantrums. Hook from Peter Pan was totally in the right if you think about it too, as he lost his hand to the boy who steals children from their home and brings them to Neverland. Ursula was exiled in the Little Mermaid and went full angry mode when her pet eels died. Understandable.

    I have to agree. While some of the motivations were somewhat understandable, they don’t justify a majority of the villains’ actions. Example; king and queen have a baby and don’t invite the suspicious queen for most likely their daughter’s safety, so I guess it’s okay to kill the baby!

Its just for their own cause. So because you dont agree with sea monsters you okay the taking of mens souls so a sea monster csn have a voice or the kidnapping of children because hook stole goods as a pirate ? I mean the big picture is at the end of the spectrum there is good and there is bad. No one is perfect. Thats the most beautiful part about disney. Sad that people dont see this.

    To counter your counter argument, what family man would harm an innocent woman just for release? Even if he did crush her, there was no guarantee that Syndrome would release him, and all that would be left would be her blood on his hands. So, Syndrome took it as a giant bluff as later stated on in the movie. Also, if Syndrome really did want to call off the missiles, he said, and I quote, "Too late", which could be taken as he really couldn't call them back after he had launched them.

    Let's not forget that he allowed missiles to destroy a plane knowing their were children inside, and showed no remorse or guilt in the end. Although he ultimately wanted revenge against Bob, this shows that he is willing to hurt those closer to him just to see him suffer. What I actually find very interesting about this particular comparison is the way analysts try to name beast as a hero. He wasn't. He was a fundamentally bad character who eventually realized it and tried to change. In the beginning of the movie, Gaston and the Beast could be mirrors of one another--but as Beast learns to control his temper, learns better manners, and starts appreciating Belle for her unique personality, Gaston grows even more selfish, more controlling, and less caring. It's a story of growth with both characters starting in a gray area and using Belle as a springboard to move in opposite directions.

  • @maythesciencebewithyou

    @maythesciencebewithyou

    The difference between Gaston and the beast is simple. The beast got punished for his misbehaviour when he was young. Gaston however was always treated like the greatest guy ever by almost all villagers, his ego grew and grew. The final straw was that the Beast got the girl, while Gaston didn't. So Gaston was furious and had a reason to show his cruel side. The beauty and the beast is infact a horrible story with a bad message, especially for girls. Many girls have this, I can change the asshole to be better attitude and thus go for the asshole thinking that there is something good in him, and only they are special and can safe him. And by doing so often breaking the heart of another boy who always was nice. The good boy warns the girl and tells her that the guy is an asshole, but the girl gets mad at the boy, calls him the bad guy for doing so and says the asshole is a misunderstood boy with a good heart. Something which might let the originally good boy get bitter and turn into an asshole himself. Girls will never admit that they are responsible for turning many good boys into assholes. If she is lucky then the asshole will become less of an asshole, but in reality he'll still be an asshole and she won't recognize it, because once in a while he'll throw in something nice to all the yelling and denigrating of her.

    Interesting, but most of these definitely don't sound like good justifications for their behavior. Many of these seem like simple motives for their behavior, not justifications. This video also seems to teach that "The ends justify the means", which, especially when you consider some of the things these villians did to "justify the ends", that's quite a horrifying prospect. Even a good intention, like for example, getting money for an operation, does not exactly justify armed robbery, kidnapping, extortion, and reckless driving.

    I think one of the biggest differences between Gaston and Adam (Beast) is that while they both started off pretty awful, the Beast learned from mistakes and tried to improve himself. Perhaps Monsieur Gaston wasn’t given such an opportunity, but I think the big thing that makes them foils is that despite reflected situations, they reacted differently. Gaston continued to pressure Belle into marrying him (to the point of taking her father hostage), but the Beast, after some failed attempts at the demand thing, became more gentle, considerate, and selfless, to the point of letting Belle return to the village despite her being likely his only chance at love and lifting the curse. Also, he actually tried to pay attention to and support her interests, such as reading.

    Pirates actually had a pretty strict code of conduct. To be caught singing and not working was usually punished swiftly. It could even be that Hook had seen him singing and goofing off constantly so, better to get rid of the dead weight that would be doing nothing productive for the ship, whilst eating and drinking their supplies.

    Right? I love how the perfectly ordinary event of hunting becomes an act of villainy just because of perspective. Obi Wan's statements about reality depending on point of view have never seemed more true than this particular place. And before anyone starts arguing that "only bucks are hunted, Bambi's mother should never have been shot, blah de blah" ... there are specific seasons for does. So let's put some perspective on this. Of course it's a terrifying experience for Bambi, but that doesn't mean the hunter is in the wrong.

Most of them have a motivation for their actions, but they aren't always justifiable in the greater greater scheme of things. Being wronged in some of these ways doesn't justify the actions the villains took.

    Hades in Mythology is a pretty sympathetic dude. God of the Underworld sounds like a powerful position but considering Elysium (Greek heaven) and Tartarus are pretty self contained, he was basically the godly equivalent of the low pay rent-a-cop security guard working the literal graveyard shift. The one time he caused any kind of actual drama was basically he was tired of being alone and wanted a wife. Sure his methods sucked, but considering the time they were actually pretty tame compared to the antics his brothers pulled. Then when Christians make movies about him, they equate him with their immortal being who rules the netherworld. Only problem is Hades isn't evil, and compared to most Greek gods, is actually pretty damn chill. No where near the Prince of Lies and Evil Incarnate.

    Are you kidding? Watch the movie from his perspective. He's the strongest and greatest man in town, and this clearly odd and strange woman who no one else in the village thinks is okay, is the apple of his eye. Sure he forces himself into her life, but he's THAT GUY, the one who thinks everyone knows him, and even when he's offered other girls, he's still pouting for Belle. He actually likes her. Also, an old man who tinkers in his home just outside of town, with the strange girl who... reads... *shutters *, is going on about his daughter being taken by some beast and can only be seen through this magic mirror. You telling me back then, that didn't sound insane? But Gaston doesn't believe a bit of it and sees that if Belle is gone and there is a beast(which no one believes for a moment) leads them to kill this monster that clearly kidnapped the girl he's been pining for. Even from the father's perspective, his daughter is still a captive being held against her will and urges him to help her. This story is all about perspective. And from any perspective, Gaston is a tragic hero in a world of misunderstandings.

Hades is basically trapped in the Underworld only able to come up to Olympus for official business while his brothers Zeus and Poseidon are free to roam the surface, it's also not a nice place except in a small part that's reserved for heroes only. Also Hera was the antagonist in the original myth, driving him mad to kill his family.

    Syndrome actually made it a point to say that he did NOT have the best intentions for giving everyone 'powers'. Syndrome: "Everyone can be a hero. EVERYONE! Can be super! And when everyones' super..." *chuckles* "...no one will be..."

  • @pedreiva

    @pedreiva

    I actually think that in itself is a good intention. That way, nobody would have to feel the heartbreak he felt being denied the sidekick job. People also wouldn't need help from others. He was effectively giving equality to everybody in the world. Too bad his actions were the furthest from good they could get. His plan also would have helped supers since they could then use their abilities again without worrying about the law since everybody has some form of power.

    +JudgeGrimm, So, equality, that is concieved through elevating the ones with less power, to the levels of those, who have more power (and, actually, shove it into your face, in Syndrome's case) is a bad thing? I mean yeah, it's a totaly different thing, when it's about superpowers and not racial segregation, right?

  • @VeaFlea

    ace0071000 i mean in the incredible universe there is already super power equality. The government is regulating supers and their families so nobody is just going around doing heroics or showing off their powers. Syndrome is the one who's about to tip the balance of power in favor of the 1 percent who can actually afford his inventions

    My favorite is Hades. He was seriously shafted by the other Olympians (he was actually the eldest in Greek mythology, but was relegated to the Underworld, which was one of the more terrible jobs. Plus, he knows how to shift a situation to his advantage, such as utilizing Hercules' feelings for Meg to undermine him. In addition, he actually sticks to his deals. Example: He promised that if anything happened to Meg, Hercules would get his strength back, and when Meg was injured, Hercules DID regain his strength.

    The one thing we can criticize about the Hercules film is that Hades is not supposed to be evil. It seems to be a popular thing to depict Hades as being the bad guy for some reason.

    TellmeNinetails Oh, he doesn't. They hate him, it seems against the rules, and I think a god would prefer to be in the company of family than dead spirits his brothers forced him to look after. I hate that Hades is the villain. I also hate how Ares is the villain in Wonder Woman when the _founder_ of the Amazons was his daughter, but that's a rant for another video.
