Layered in 100Lbs of Cereal Rye last night just before the Rain. Thank you so much Jeff! Our family wouldn't have found the 110 acre property of our dreams with 2 acres of Food plot planted without you sharing your knowledge!

I learned my lesson in October of 2014 about the benefits of using a lifeline. My top stick ladder strap had been chewed by a squirrel but on my climb up in the dark that morning I did not notice it. I did the moment it broke and I fell 23' to the hard ground. I crushed my upper right humorous which eventually required 4 surgeries including a reverse replacement of that shoulder. My L4, L5 were fractured as well as 5 places in my pelvis. I learned a tough lesson. I'm 64 now and still hunt regularly but always with a lifeline. The sad thing is that most people that know what I went through still don't use them.

I should add that I have permanent nerve damage that makes the skin of my right leg numb from crotch to toes. Safety first!

As a hunter in his 30s, it's surprising to me how many people do not use safety lines when climbing trees. I expect the older baby boomer generation hunters to be the ones who don't use them but even guys younger than me are not. It's not even terribly expensive. You just need a few ropes, and the knowledge to tie two knots - a knot to secure the rope to the tree, and a prussik. I'm using a saddle for the first time this year and my linesman or tether are on the tree at all times.

I like using screw in steps for handholds too up there instead of trying to bear hug the tree w one arm as yer getting on and off the strand. And yes, ALWAYS STEP DOWN onto the platform! Good luck everyone! ☘️

Jeff- I’m going out for my first whitetail hunt this October, and I can’t tell you how much farther ahead I’ll be because of the knowledge and wisdom I glean from your videos. I still have a lot of learning to do the hard way, but I’m so excited to continue my family legacy and be the next man up in conserving our land and the flora & fauna on it. Great tips Jeff. Safety and ease in and out are key. At 56, I am not as limber as I once was and took way too many risks when younger. Didn’t know you were a banker, retiring 9/30 from my banking career and looking forward to a LOT of deer hunts this fall! Good hunting everyone!

Thank you jeff some more great advice. A 30 year bow hunter here ive learned a ton. None more important then safety ropes and harnesses. Those are new to me in the last 15 years. Won’t climb or let my kids climb without them.

Have you made any videos just on tree stand safety, that is, proper harness applications and how to put it on correctly, proper tree stand installation, proper ladder install, life line install and use, etc ? A playlist on this I think would be very helpful to all tree stand bowhunters old and new as well as experienced hunters. There's is that "oh yeah, I forgot about that" moment most of us have at times.

I’m 61 and just started using life lines, after using them for a season I’ll never set up a stand without them. It’s such a piece of mind. I never used them until my grandson’s started hunting with me because I was worried about them.I’ve always hunted very high 25+ feet high too. Looking back it’s crazy that I wasn’t using them before this.

Thank you for putting this out! i am actually going to hang my first stand ever today. I have a general area I am looking at that is about a 40-50 yard strip of woods between a large overgrown field full of old Christmas trees and golden rod above and a small almost 1 lane country road on the down hill side. There are trails running both horizontal to the topography and perpendicular to where they cross the road. I am having trouble deciding whether I should put the stand close to the road (archery only) or put it up closer to the field. Down by the road I would have the least impact while walking in but the stand could be visible to someone driving through.

Having 'tried' and failed to get myself into stands because the steps were too far apart or the seat was too high from the last step, I concur. It is much easier to get into a stand when the ladder/steps are 90 degree and a couple feet above the seat. Thanks!

Def like to step down or even with my stand. Good point. Im not as limber as I was and why risk a slip and fall….even though Im tethered….falling hurts when that safety vest stops your fall. I use a mobile run and gun stand now…..so I dont have a safety line….i just tie to the tree and move my tether as I go up. But I do use a safety line on stationary stands.

I usually put stands in evergreens, natural cover, lots of branches to use for bow holders, arm rests, feels like a nest

Yes, I just put one up in a white pine. It is the best stand concealment I have ever had.

Would you mind detailing the equipment? Im thinking of adding 2 lock ons to my sets. Never used ladders or ladder sticks. Last time i used one it was screw in steps!!! Can you set up and hang that set by yourself? I live in pretty hard to access mountains so the ability to not need 4 people to put up a ladder stand is big. Also comfort factor? This is more of a travel corridor question, but if you have a travel corridor several hundred yards long on a single property 1. Do you place multiple stands along it for different situations? 2. Terrain depending, what is the closest you would put one stand to another?

I now have life lines on all my Treestands and thanks to seeing the Family Traditions on WHS several are FT’s. My problem was that I fell stepping into the stand 10/19 when the sawed off limb I was holding to broke. Fortunately, I only broke my femur and my hip. (Not dead and not paralyzed) I am so grateful and killed a deer out of same stand last year. It’s ok to be stupid as long as we don’t stay stupid. Thanks Jeff and keep the videos coming. I fell 28 feet 10/21/07. To many injuries to talk about. Cause of fall , unknown? Trauma center 27 days and nights. Helicopter ride 16,800. I’m still taking strong meds because of chronic pain issues. I still hunt but I’m harnessed up al time. To God be the glory I’m still living for his cause:

First of all, you must have had speech lessons because I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say…”um” in the 100+ videos that I’ve ever watched! 👍 Also you should SERIOUSLY consider starting a hunting show on the Outdoor Channel because I think it would quickly become the #1 show! Why? Because it would be a “how to” show instead of just the same ‘ol thing! First Sunday in Novemeber 1995 a hunter fell from a stand in the woods about 1/4 mile from our house. When he fell he broke his neck he didn't have a life line. no one knew where he was hunting that afternoon. his truck was hidden in brushy area. I had heard a gun shot later that night thought it was odd to hear a shot so late. I didn't know he was missing until the next day

You are always talking about water holes. I have 2 streams running through my 35 acres. Do I really need water holes with all this water access??

I think that is a good question. There are a lot of variables, doe density, available water, and temperature of the particular day are just a few things to consider 🤷‍♂️ im no pro however that's some things that I would take into consideration. Shoot straight or, shoot often. 👍

While putting up my ladder or climbing sticks. I keep my stand pretty well away on the ground as I go up to tighten the straps at the top of the ladder/sticks. If i would happen to fall, I surely do NOT want to land on a rigid metal stand.

Philip if you are wearing a linemans belt when you do that, you shouldn't fall period. It is a little more hassle when setting up steps but I use a linemans belt when setting up climbing sticks and if I slip or something breaks I am not going to fall.

@@BooneDownSouth good call. I used to but, got away from it because it's more to carry. I should get back to it. My wife shouldn't have to take care of my crippled ass because I'm too lazy to carry a piece of safety equipment if, id fall.

Question, I use a 3 man blind for me and my son. We always wondered if it be a good idea to sleep in blind until legal hunt time. Yes I know scents of all sorts along with sounds of sleep can spook a deer. But I've heard good results on people who have. What are your thoughts? Thx

I mean you could do that if you wanted😂but no need as long as u are quiet getting in and you get in there before daylight I know it’s hard with a kid because sometimes they can be a little loud but as long as ur quiet and ur access is good there is no need to sleep in the blind👌

I do not remove it...just drill into the corn in the same location the following year...

I should have used lifelines I fell 20 ft to bum of tree stand crushed 3 vertebra two back surgery’s 7 screws 2 pins and a cage around all vertebra tried pills hooked on pain pills hydrocodone strong as they make,tried morphine in comb ended had to implant pain pump works sometime most time not

On private land do you remove all your Hang On stands & Ladders yearly ?

I won't get in a stand without a Lifeline, I was lucky a couple of years ago, my foot slipped and the lifeline kept me from falling twenty feet.

Would you use a lifeline with a climbing stand?

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I'm about 16' on one stand but it's dense brush. If I go any higher it blocks my shot, but I thought it was too low and I'm too obvious. I may re- adjust or find a different tree. I appreciate your reply. The content is extremely valuable. Learning years of experience in a short time is priceless.

To Jeff: Why not sight from your stand? I’m up there attaching a safety strap and can sight my mock scrape/water hole (if I have one there) or any other obvious marker (bush, tree, etc.). I take a photo with my iPhone, use my range finder, then mark up my photo with 20-30-40 yard distances that I can reference either before climbing the stand or while up there. That way I’m dialed in when ready to shoot. The other way is to mark the distance points with orange tape.

My girlfriend went with me to set up what she calls my " tree seats " I laughed and said , no honey, they're tree STANDS . " but you're supposed to SIT in it , right ? "
