Followed your methods last year and my first year stand reached almost 4 feet. Thank you for working this hard to help all of us!

Got some switch from the vendor you mentioned...ended up with a field that was half switch and half foxtail. There had never been foxtail in this field prior to the planting. Looks like I got a batch he didn't reject. His brassica seed on the other hand was excellent.
Perfect timing! Just what I was hoping you would cover. I’m eager for switch!

Great insight Jeff
what are the steps to follow to correct when switch is not thick enough - from all videos combined I am guessing I would mow to max height of mower and add more switch seed to standing patch????
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
5 ай бұрын
It may be thick enough, but depressed by weeds. On an older stand like that...1.5 pints of 2-4D per acre for broadleafs. Or 5-7 ounces per acre of quincloric. Always Simaxine prior to spring greenuo. I would then add switch after the simazine and after the 2-4D,, if actually needed.
I watch all your video's, for the past few years. I feel now, I finally know everything! lol
Another good one jeff can't wait for next season!!🏹🦌
My best stand ever was that area you told me to drag the bare dirt from past food plot, seed and crush with the packer max followed by simazine. That was may 18th planted. No weeds and 3 foot of growth. My first stand to fully make it.
Just got all the dead ash logs out of my thicket last wknd. Now on to burning all the brush. Will follow up with hinging some maples in there and this spring going to plant white pine in the maple tops.
Jeff, do you have any videos or instructions on how to convert a field of Golden rod to switchgrass?

I was thinking about doing the Egyptian wheat with switchgrass lol thanks for the information
@icehog2367

It works perfectly fine, no issue with planting them together.
I understand not adding food to screening. What if I’m screening a logged area of tree tops. Just adding to the bedding, and add food there? I’m not going there. It’s adding food to bedding. And it’s diverse. Am I wrong? Over thinking???
I tried the Egyptian wheat this past year. I'm sure it has its place but I'll most likely not use it again at my farm. The stalks were too thick and I didn't put cross overs in until it was late so the deer didn't like trying to cross it into the food at all. It really hurt my farm this year as far as hunting the late season. I've got a bunch of cave in rock established and I frost seeded some Shawnee late Oct so I'm anxious to see how it does. Thanks Jeff
Screen, screen, screen. Great video Sir.
Do you have a video or suggestion for 2nd year stand of switch that had some weed competition its 1st year,milk weed cats tail and I have no way of cutting it can I burn it? Thanks for all your video and help
I got stung with bad seed, contaminated seed a few years back exactly like you said. A couple dollars a pound more for quality is cheap insurance.
Jeff, will switchgrass tolerate moist bottom land? Not standing water but, definitely damp most of the year.
Morning Jeff.. another great video!! I have a well developed switchgrass area, about 4 acres total, that borders my road on the south and my linear food plot and woods on the north... my problem is that this year ( and other times over the years), a early, heavy(8-10”) wet snow, with no thawing has left the switchgrass packed down for the winter!! The food plot has been completely expose since December 10th or so... any ideas on a short/long term fix!?? Thanks
Foxtail didn’t come from switchgrass seed
Would you make a video explaining how you take care of switchgrass suck as mowing, burning etc.. and how would you add browse pockets into it for bedding? And would you ever recommend planting a multi acre field of switchgrass?
So educational

Thanks again !!! One of the biggest takeaways I’ve been learning over the past few years while trying to take in as much content as possible is........ To act and do something and be willing to fail and learn pick yourself back up and try again’!!!!!!! I can be the smartest book / KZread / podcast listener out there However if I am not willing to try and fail sometimes I will never succeed!!!! “Better to fail trying then succeed at nothing “ Love the content Jeff !!!!!!!!
Thanks Jeff! Frost seeded my powerline alone my north border last fall. Also Forestry mulched some popple. Cant wait for spring. Do you think thick stands of hazel brush will work for a base stand of cover if i use your method of diversity pocketing it out as if it were pure switchgrass or a pure stand of conifers?
After the switch is established say 2nd spring and years after what do you do to the old standing switch do you mow it every spring or just let it go
What is the name of the the seed and where you get? Thank you advance
I am looking at hanging a few stands in a fairly thick wooded area. How do I go about cutting out some shooting lanes without loosing too much cover. These stands would be near active trails. Thanks!!! Your videos are great! I hunt in South Carolina so your videos are getting around!

Great video. Do you know if the spray enlist can be used prior to germination of the switch grass?
So, it sounds like switchgrass along timber edges or tree lines isn’t a good idea because of the shade factor. Am I right?
I'm guessing that you didn't have lack of precipitation on your list because most whitetail properties are back east where there is plenty of snow and rain. I studied and followed your frostseeding switchgrass plan verbatim, but nothing grew, apparently because we don't get much spring or summer rain here in Central Wyoming. Going to try drought tolerant conifers next, but that's going to be expensive.
We had one planting get choked out by an invasive grass. We timed the spraying pretty well but the un wanted grass came in strong. What should we do with it this year? Mow?
Can you put a link somewhere that we could access your supplier of switchgrass seed? Thanks Jeff

When you broadcasted late spring how did the seed stratify?
Thanks for another good video Jeff. I was wondering if switch grass grows well in wetter lower areas?
@alexpinnow6509
3 жыл бұрын
From what I've read this is possible, I have a similar case trying to stabilize river banks. Kill kill kill weeds and it should go well. Read a study stating that prolonged wet periods is similar to a freeze and thaw cycle promoting stratification and germination
Would love to get a stand established. How does it grow on heavier wetter soils?
Good morning Jeff With the snow we have in southwest Wi, what is your advice if there is still snow in March with regard to Simazine. How long does Simazine stays active in the soil? I can only surmise a delay in germination. thanks for the videos
My first year switchgrass seemed to get out competed last year. Mowed it at the end of summer. Would you recommend frost seeding over it this spring?
You nailed it on the head! I had a switchgrass planting that failed and foxtail took off in it as think as thick can be, how do you do that? Crazy how relevant your videos are to what happens to me. Thanks for the info, looking for a better switchgrass see supplier, too bad northwoods is sold out.
What would you suggest for converting brome terraces into switch grass?
Will the switch grow well if no competition right where the switch is planted, but is located just next to wooded area where it will get less sunlight when the leaves are on the trees?
Hey Jeff is the north woods heavy duty screening as good as switchgrass
If there is ample moisture, then the frost/thaw isn't needed to stratify the seed?
What setting do u use on earthway seeder for 8-10lbs/acre applications for switchgrass?
How much do you value golden rod .. as a natural cover etc .. I usually leave some .. on edges is that good Thx nick
Jeff - I just gained access to a 4 acre hilltop pasture over the winter here in SW Wisconsin. Being that the pasture grass needs to be killed off this year am I correct to say it would be wise to establish switch next spring? Or, can I spray and till in May and try to establish this year yet? Thanks
My local co-op only had simazine in a solid form that you would spread with a seedar, have you had experience with this type before? If so how many pounds per acre should I use? Thank you!
You can only do the 2-4d and gly mix the first year?
Will switch grow well in wet almost swampy like areas?
What's the best food plot to use in southern Minnesota
I am in the process of buying a property and there are a couple areas of old pasture and another area with Alfalfa growing. Is it too late establish switchgrass in those areas this year?
I have the same Hand Seeder your using in the Video... what is your setting for the Switchgrass...thnx..
Are you mowing the switchgrass yearly? Every couple of years? Or not at all?
Think that’s what happened frost seeding on snow/ice may have washed off during thaw cause everything Jeff instructed me to do regarding my foodplot worked out great except the switchgrass but before I chalk it up as a failure need to check it out once snow is gone it’s been just about a year since frost seeding time will tell thanks again Jeff for the great information
Is there any good nurse crop for switch?
I over planted switchgrass and it’s stunted, it didn’t get over 18 inches high.

So is it safe to mow switchgrass when it is dormant? Before green up?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
3 жыл бұрын
I would wait until after green up...no need to mow pre green up. Typically in May when it is still short enough to mow with a small mower or tractor.
I'm confused of the statement "deer don't wanna bed in switch" I'm pretty sure your other videos say plant at 7#s for bedding.

Nope, that is when it germinates but you should frost seed it. Hit it with grass suppression at first thaw to prevent early weed grass germination. Watch Jeff’s other videos on the process.
