1 Day with Iraq’s Disappearing Religion | The Yazidis

Discovering an ancient religion in the mountains of Iraq. Sign up for my FREE book preview & you'll receive 3 crazy stories from my adventures to EVERY COUNTRY in the world. Check it out: lexielimitless.com/newsletter
I’ve found that the places around the world that people tend to fear the most are the ones we should spend the most time learning about. This area of Northern Iraq, also called Iraqi Kurdistan, is one of the most unique, off the beaten path places I encountered as I traveled to every country. Once you lean in past the modern tensions, everything from the people to the foods and the rich history leaves you wanting to discover more.
I recently had the opportunity to travel back to Iraq and explore this complex country deeper with my friend Drew Binsky and Thomas and Cory from Yes Theory. We were documenting our experiences for an epic Yes Theory video, you’ll be able to see our full adventure through Iraq on Yes Theory’s KZread Channel next year so don’t forget to subscribe and keep an eye out for that coming soon: / yestheory
The Yazidis are also known as the People of the Peacock Angel. Their way of life is rooted in ancient, indigenous Mesopotamian beliefs. Its estimated to be only 500,000 Yazidis living in Iraq today. To truly be a Yazidi, both of your parents must also be Yazidi. It is impossible to convert to Yazidism and Yazidis are not allowed to marry outside of the religion. This makes them an inherently peaceful people because the Yazidis aren’t invading forgein land to convert followers and wipe out people who don’t share the same beliefs. The holiest of all places for Yazidis is Lalish. They believe it is the Garden of Eden where Adam and humanity began making it the oldest place in the world. It is expected for every yazidi to make pilgrimage to Lalish at some point in their lives and be cleansed by the holy waters. The ground is so sacred here, it is forbidden to wear anything dirty ‘[[on your feet so the first thing we did when we arrived was remove our shoes…
Yazidism is an oral religion, passed down through word of mouth for generations. The Yazidis believe in 1 God who has created 7 angels to help guide humanity, the most important being Melek Tawus or the Peacock angel. Yazidis believe they are descendants from the first man, Adam, and that the Peacock Angel was present when Adam was still in the Garden of Eden. Malak Taus is a fallen angel, sent down to earth, to lead their people. A fallen angel has negative connotations in other religions, as the devil is also often perceived as an fallen angel. This cultural misunderstanding has given the title of “devil worshipers” to the Yazidis for centuries. This is also inaccurate because the Yazidis don’t actually have an all encompassing evil spirit in their mythology but regardless, this dispute has justified centuries of violence and forced conversions against the Yazidis.

I am Yazidi myself I fled from Shingal and now I live in Canada. I think since I have watched hundreds of videos about Yazidis but this is probably the first truthful and honest and amazing and definitely the best video I’ve seen talk about our religion and culture. Many would make videos say Yazidis are evil worshiper or that they are Kurds, Arabs, or Persians, that is just like helping ISIS with the annihilation of the Yazidis. You have only said the truth and that’s what makes you and this video special. Love you and love what you are doing. You are very inspiring and I really liked this video and all your other videos that I’ve watched. Love from a Yazidi to you and your colleagues. Peace and Long Live Ezidi, Kurmanji, Ezidxan. ❤️❤️🥰🙏🏼 only showing the truth and not mixing other misinformations about something makes someone love you. „We are the victims of terrorism, so don‘t stereotype us with terrorists“ I feel so bad for these people, they seem to have such a bright mindset and loving culture. And after all the issues they have to fight against the media, which keeps putting them all in one box sharing only the negativity about their cultures/countries.

Im kurdish, and yes, kurdish people fight for their lives, there are lots of people that hate us because they think were "Poor". Kurdistan has a very nice culture, but we have some problems here that make life harder for us. However, kurdistan is not down, i know out reigon is still not born to he a country, but there are still fun things to do here, such as: There are a ton of malls with a lot of different categories to buy. Plus, our villiages are absolutley amazing, things here are mostly homemade, and healthy. There is also something that had made our country even more popular and unique, and its our foods. The best meal you can ever get, is yaprax, kfta, kuba, and so on... Theyre absolutley AMAZING (they make me wanna fly LMAO) Well anyways, its not nice for us to be called "Poor" so please respect us more, however i know u mean no disrespection シ Have a good day, and stay safe❤

Wow... Yazidi people are so humble and they have so much similarities with southern Indian roots and culture. The peacock 🦚 is the vehicle of lord Kartikeya, also known as lord Murugan in south east asia, who is known as the son of Lord Shiva who was a feirce warrior and was primarily looking after the south direction. There are some old texts which talk about some sect of people migrating from Southern India to west and settled in parts of Turkey and Iraq ( may be called Mesopotamia and Babylon back then).

Not just Iraq, please include Iran too. Both were Zoroastrian and Yazidi countries. Both had fantastic empires. Unfortunately Islam and Christianity destroyed 90% of all ancient cultures and religions. Look at Afghanistan. No rights for women and Sharia laws are brutal. In Saudi Arabia, MBS is trying to reform. But his family members aren't allowing him to reform so fast. Overconservative orthodox mindset slows down pace of progress. In Iran alone, 75% Iranians consider themselves as Ex-Muslims or Atheists or spiritualists. Once you read Quran and Hadiths in your own language and not in Arabic and then try to find humanity, you wouldn't. Kafirs have no option but to suffer torture and die. Hence we see ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Taliban, etc. etc. etc. destroying freedom and peace of humans on this planet.

Yazidi religion is actually Hinduism (tamil culture) influenced by middle eastern culture. Snakes are a big part of hindu mysticism and peacocks are only found in indian subcontinent. And the angel seen here is wearing saree and lighting a peacock lamp which is Tamil tradition.

i did some research about them... Yazidis are Indo-Iranian People... Iranian and Indian people have a common ancestor.... This is why Yazidis have some similar culture like indian but it doesn't mean Yazidism is Hindusim... Yazidi is a Monotheism religion and it share some Abrahamic Prophets, as well as concept like Angel, Satan, Heaven, Hell etc.... Yazidi consider a muslim sufi named 'Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir'' as their Peacock Angel..

@@milliyetci5672 For non Hindus and many Hindus too ,think that Hinduism is polytheistic. But if you go and find the source of all creation it is Brahman. Yazidism is definitely influenced by the prophets in middle East. And about the Abrahamic teaching are derived from Zoroaster which in turn was derived from Hinduism. With time as new prophets and monks emerged they shaped the culture in a way that they thought were the best at those times. So nowadays yazidism may culturally be close to Zoroastrianism or Islam than Hinduism. You can see a similar change if you take the example of Buddhism . As It travelled from India to China and to Japan or from India to Sri Lanka. Now Buddhism in each of these countries are different.

Lovely place when I told my dad and brother I want to go Iraq. They looked at me like I lost my mind but just look at the people. They look so peaceful you can't judge a place just base on a few nut jobs. Thank you for this beautiful video I hope I can go one day soon.
