I wanna give you a huge thank you. I am so thankfull for finding someone who explains theory so that it becomes understandable and the outcome is so powefull. I have been trying to grasp the theory behind passing chords and 2-5-1's for quite some time and never gotten a good explenation when asking my peers. You just cleared it all up. Thank you! 👏👏

An interesting variation is to go Am, then A7-D7-G (V/V and then V in G), cool effect as the A minor chord temporarily changes to major in a passing chord.

that 2-5-1, in your example, really opened up doors for me..i knew the sequence, but only ever used it as the basic progression i never thought of using it as a passing sequence

Why does the chord BEFORE the Secondary Dominant sound pleasing as well? - ie C before E7 to Am

Bc its major, can do voice leading smoothly to e7 and is basically almost the same chord as Am, both being diatonic also helps. Btw, playing F after that feels really nice too bc it presents a smooth resolution to the I chord and its also a third away from Am so they share 2 notes

That's just because when we say a Second chord, we mean a Major Second that 2 semi-tones away of tonic chord. Not a Minor Second that 1 semi-tone higher. A Minor Second is to dissonant interval for common use.

Oh, that’s easy, play the notes in the E major scale… 4 sharps E F# G# A B C# D# Scale degree 2 is an F sharp That’s the note and now the “quality“ or flavor of the chord is dependent upon what mode you are in - for most people it’s major or minor.
