    I appreciate that you did this video. I've had a Ram since 2007, never really became a expert with it. I believe a more detailed vid is needed. The beginning wasn't really showing what the dial was doing as he was spinning the arrow. Which way was +/-? Details like that. What the weight does? Just more explanation for all the steps. I also thinks that the man who invented the tool should of been the person who explained how to use it. TY for finding the people who can explain things.

    I normally shoot every bare shaft through paper until I get a perfect bullet hole. Make a mark where the sweet spot is then I fletch each arrow accordingly. I usually don't get flyers or cull arrows.

    My understanding is on a compound, the arrow flexes vertically out of the bow. Therefore it makes sense to spine align in that axis. In this Vid they put the stiff and weak sides of the arrow (spine alignment) perpendicular to the flex out of the bow, so i wonder if my understanding of the flex out of the bow is incorrect

    I found out about the R.A.M Spine tester about 15 years ago, I went to there facility down in Moscow, Idaho and purchased it. I have been using it ever since with every arrow I build. This is a great tool, you can make a .003 arrow into a .001 arrow with a little patience. good video

    I don’t know how many people I’ve seen with flight problems over the years. I think some, most, shops just whack em off, stick screw-in insert in it and send them down the road. Might work but I’m betting those people aren’t getting the best flight. Building great arrows for a particular bow or setup can take a little extra time. And can improve accuracy etc. people, learn to build arrows.

    You can and you should do this without any tool. Just plug both ends of the shaft with round peace of electric tape and put in a container filled with water. Shaft would rotate by gravity and the spine would be at the bottom.

    I always thought from what ive seen anyway, shouldn’t the stiffest spine be facing up or down when on the string, so that the throat of the nock lines up with the stiff spot? The way he indexed the knocks it looked like the stiffest spine of the shaft would be running horizontal to the throat nock and have the stiff spot facing left at say 9oclock when the arrow is knocked on the bow….i gotta be missing something here. Also couldnt see close up that well when you did the initial batching as far as the dial and gauge goes

    The fact that Victory Arrows uses these machines tells me that the spine align on the arrow label should be accurate. I cut my arrows to 29 inches so if I cut 1.5 inches off each end should give me a straight arrow ?

  • @mab0852
    @mab0852 Жыл бұрын

    I always check both ends for runout and make my end cut(s) to cut off as much runout as possible whether that is from 1 or both ends equally or offset to get as straight as possible. That said, I do it opitically with my arrow spinner and a set of parallels. Really want a Ram tester to measure everything though. I was considering making one, but with all the extra features, pretty easy call to just buy it complete.

    Just picked one up from podium archer! BIG QUESTION: It appears to me that they oriented the stiffest part to be 90deg left or right? I thought in a more recent video with Nick from AAE, that he insisting nock tuning for spine stiffness usually results in the stiff and weak to be vertically oriented? Did your arrows end up having the stiffest up/down or left/right?? (I believe you used same arrows in all vids unless it was multiple batches)

    Wouldn't you want to check the straightness first and cut the arrow to length before marking everything else because wouldn't that also impact and potentially change the weak/strong side of the arrow and where you index your nock? I'm not asking to be snarky - that just makes more sense to me but if I'm wrong, correct my ignorance.

    Dynamic spine isn’t always same as static. Bareshaft each one then fletch accordingly

  • @caninphx

    @caninphx

    Жыл бұрын

    Or you can just buy firenocks tool for dynamic bend, or design a jig to compress the arrow with inserts /field tips installed from the ends. Rotate the arrow so the bend is upwardd mark it, fletch it there and voila never need to bareshaft again. If your handy you can do this on your lca bow press by marking two spots on the arms thta are the same position in each arm. Then use a ctr ounch/drill to make a indentation.Take a completely built arrow minus fletching install a field point I. The insert and put one loose on the back end. Put each field point in the indentation and close the press enough to bend the arrow a bit. The arrow will always bend the same way. Rotate the bend upward mark the shaft and voila you just made a jig that does nock tuning. This ram tool is however designed to check the stiffness/straightness of an arrow to an ASTM standard. I just buy march grade arrows and use one of my two methods above and voila. I don’t need a ram tester.

    Just another reason to buy Victory

  • @crabwalk1891
    @crabwalk189110 ай бұрын

    Sweet vid Dan, I guess I missed this when originally posted. So I have a great question about arrow straightness specifically, I’ve been shooting Victory VAP elites for 4 years, I’m a 4mm guy, I like that Victory “spine aligned” their arrows. I also like the GPI, I like you, have a short DL 27.5”, anyhow I started to realize that A regardless of where the actual spine was marked wasn’t always where the arrow from arrow to arrow wanted to be! So I question the validity of their spine marks and B I started to receive more and more that didn’t seem to spin true per dozen. I finally got frustrated mostly because I’m OCD, emailed Victory explaining and asking in a nice manner, essentially can I sent you 18 arrows that are way out of spec .001 straightness, this is out of approximately 5 dozen that I culled out, Victory wouldn’t even email me back after 2 attempts! So, screw them and bought a dozen black Eagle X-impacts, I got them, I was excited, pulled them out, straight to the Pine Ridge arrow spinner…. 5 arrows had excessive wobble! I was fuming! I called Black Eagle and Cory told me that they measure straightness from the inside diameter and spin testing them only shows the imperfection of the outside diameter and wasn’t a true detection of straightness considering there is no roller when the arrow is in flight, he went on to say spin test them on a known straight broadhead or filed point by spinning then like a top, which generally I do anyway after the arrow build is 100% complete. Have you even heard a comment from ANY of the companies like that? IE straightness measure in the inside diameter? Why the hell do we all spin test them???

    Did you ever find the answer to your question concerning the Black Eagles? What brand of arrows are you shooting now? I’m thinking about buying this tester as I am also OCD, but at the same time I don’t want to waste the time and money if I’m just going to end up chasing my own tail and accomplishing nothing!

  • @crabwalk1891

    @crabwalk1891

    Nope, I asked Dan and Josh Jones, no answer. I will say that I built 3 X-impacts, 1 of which has slight wobble, used Easton 4mm 55 grain titanium inserts, 125 grain field point, AAE max vanes (3 vane configuration) left helical, because my arrows clock left and they group really well out to 80 with field points and Exodus broadheads. Just for testing, perhaps they will be my arrow next year but this year I was already committed to VAP Elites, same Easton titanium insert, 125 Exodus heads, blazer vanes (3 fletch). Already tagged a cow and a bear, complete pass throughs. Total arrow weight 445. You can build a spine tester for 1/4 of the price of that thing or if you have time, nock tune the bareshafts through paper to find the spine, or at least where your bow setup prefers that shaft, mark and fletch. I used to do that but now I just shoot groups, if I have a consistent flyer arrow, clock the nock over to the next vane, rinse and repeat.

    I built something similar 10 years ago. I think you didn't show it's full potential. I keep track of all arrows i measure in an Excel spreadsheet. So i know which arrow tuned best for a bow (spine, weight, etc). I can compare different brand shaft just from measuring them and predict to half an inch what bareshaft would be best. Saves a lot of time and money! I can send not matching arrows back, no need for testing in real life. Because not every e.g. 500 spine arrow shaft is like another. One brands 500 spine is stiffer than others. Benefit: you can keep track of arrow quality. The first Gold Tip arrows manufactured in Mexico where horrible! You can also number your arrows and measure how they age over time. Important for me as an tournament shooter. Endless possibilities! Best regards from a viewer from Germany.

    OK. You can buy a $350 tool to tell you where your spine is on each arrow... or, buy a $10 flashlight and do the same thing using your eyes. Most carbon arrow manufacturers roll the carbon into a tube. This overlap creates the stiff spot in each arrow. The RAM tester identifies the spine so you can index it. However... you can also shine an LED flashlight INTO the carbon, and look into three shaft (obviously not directly INTO the light) and roll the carbon. You will see a spot where the carbon overlaps, which creates a very definitive line. This is the spine. Index your arrows accordingly to nock them in the same position on the arrow rest, they will group better together. You're still going to have a few that refuse to behave and group with the majority. You can try to nock tune them and get some improvements, or just make them practice shafts. Hope this helps someone.
