the environmental impact is MUCH higher than you imagine. its just the scale is small so you dont notice it as easily.

The interaction with the environment is huge. I‘m studying hydrology and depending on what type of water this is and how great the water abstraction is (by channeling the water in those pipes) you could kill all biodiversity and life around this or giving the environment a hard time in dry months.

Why didn’t you tip out the concrete from the tractor front bucket into the base using the hydraulics ?

I've landed on this by accident but I'm hooked! Whilst at Nottingham Trent Uni I was involved in a 2nd year project to develop a micro hydro scheme using a standard 3 phase motor as the generator. When we published our report we were asked for an extra copy as it turned out, in our presentation audience, was an engineer from the Intermediate Development Technology Group charity (who sponsored our project - now called Practical Action) and he was leaving a week later to put our ideas into practice in Nepal! Can't wait for the next part. Good luck! :)

The best thing about these various jobs/installations is that none of them are the same and the experience learnt will be essential for future jobs.

Speaking as someone who has watched your content from that first mix of cob, I am incredibly proud of where you're at now. Quality stuff Kris.

What a gifted craftsmen. Old world skills meets new world tools and materials.

Such hard work but it looks so satisfying as it progresses and comes together. It's a real credit to your own learned skills over the years that you're now attracting customers who wish to benefit from your craft.

I've only ever done 32mm Alkathene pipe runs, never realised those fittings came in such big sizes!

The Two of You bring us all back to a Time when building houses and sheds with local tradesmen was the norm. Everything was DIY. Our house was build from concrete AND Steel. Love the way you take pride in your work. Well done to you both.

Really surprised me how well that little gas powered winch did pulling that heavy pipe around. Anyway, looking great so far and looking forward to the rest of the build.

It's just a capstan winch, great force multiplier and very efficient. Definitely petrol. We British don't call it gas as gas is gas and petrol is wet

That's looking really great, Kris. Reminds me of the first professional job I did drywalling someone's bathroom. I had done loads of drywalling for myself, but once I took that leap into doing it for someone else, it took on a whole different feel. I started doing my best work. Pulling from all my years of experience. That little turbine house is going to look great. Can't wait for the next video.

In the future, may I suggest make the threaded rods slightly different lengths, with the longest in the middle? It would be a lot easier to align them by wiggling the top sleeper. Maybe something like 21-24-23-22 inches or whatever the appropriate length would be.

Drill the top and bottom sleeper and bolt down. Then drill the other holes though both sleepers and fit additional threaded bars from the middle out. Even better, cut threads on the ends of plain bars. You may well find that thick wall tubes work fine at less cost.

The way we build walls out of RR ties or landscape ties set the first tie then drive 1/2" rebar so it goes through the first tie then about two feet into the ground, then set the second tie and drive rebar through that one into the one below it, and keep doing that as the wall goes up. Predrill the holes so the rebar is a tight fit and there's no need for bolting them together. These guys do great work.

I absolutely love watching the work you do, Kris. Amazing stuff.

thats the part I do all this for really. I love to survey it, works it all out and then turn it on and it do what I expected. that gives me a real satisfaction. This system will be 1.5kw max and around 1kw average for 7-8 months a year.

@@KrisHarbour Glad you did your homework. The flow at the intake looked a bit low. You might need to keep wildlife out of the intake during the drier months, so they don't set up shop in there and block your penstock.

That's a great question. One reason folk sometimes think about micro hydro is the cost of bringing the grid supply to a remote location. That can cost a great deal of money. Micro-hydro does need regular maintenance, but it can be cost effective if you don't count your own time spent working on, and maintaining it, as an expense! I have a small waterfall, and looked at harnessing that for some micro hydro but when I worked out the cost of cables, pipes, and concrete, in addition to the cost of the turbine and generator, it put me off. I have to say, even though this system has a good head, the flow looked really poor. I'm sure Kris will have done his research at the site, though. Maybe it's only needed in winter when solar is less reliable?

The flow is seasonal and summer is the perfect time for installation. I’m sure Kris and the customer have historic flow info to base calculations on.

well if he doesnt have electricity, the payback is instant, if he is going to grid tie, it depends on how much he spent initially ....most time with hydro the ROI is less than solar......solar has a ROI of about 10 - 12 years since you only get electric from it during the day....hydro runs 24/7

Great stuff, I have always been thinking you could do with a dedicated counter weight for the back of the tractor for traction and stability. I made one out of a blue barrel filled with bricks and concrete with a built in hitch cast into it. I guess you wouldn't want to transport a weight like this to your away jobs - maybe a water based one that you could empty and refill?

Yeah. It's always much cheaper to let the customer pay for the water, and not have to pay for fuel to carry the weight to and from the job.

It's been a few years since I've been in the UK.. I was stationed there for 4 years ( 85'- 89' ) and I remember the locals always possessing outstanding workmanship, you guys are no different, from what I've seen so far..you're kickin ass !!! Keep it up fellas.. I can't wait to see the rest!!!!!

I hope you’ll talk about the wiring in a later video. Is voltage drop a significant issue? How far are you transmitting the electricity?

We want to put in our own microhydro system and haven't a fraction of the knowledge or experience you have, so the opportunity to watch you putting this in is phenomenal. Advanced Nutrition - Kris mentioned near the beginning that it is currently the dry/not-wet-very-often season. He anticipates a consistent 1KW output - maximum output of 1.5KW - for 7-8 months each year.

Hi Kris, not sure if you're already familiar with it, but in Slovenia we use a tool called a motika, which is a triangular spade with the head perpendicular to the wood, and it works wonders for digging and scraping soil with lots of rocks in it like streams. Great effort, well done.

@@Philrc Yes I guess they do, although funnily enough the triangle is flipped. The pointy triangle is really for stones, it saves a lot of energy and your back ;)

We have those here too but they're not the best for digging that type of ground which is mainly rock and stone.
