    Andy Serkis was originally hired to be just the voice of Gollum. He ended up being way more than that. They put him in a "gimp suit" and had him act along with Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, so that they would have a real Gollum to act against. (Turns out that he is an accomplished rock climber, which was also useful.) Over time, he became so useful that they redesigned the original Gollum animation to look more like Andy's features. This happened long after they had already started the animation process, so a lot of the original animation was thrown out and replaced by a more "Andy-centric" Gollum character. The few scenes of Gollum in FOTR are of the original animation, chosen so that the viewer doesn't notice the change. And that amazing dialogue scene between Smeagol and Gollum was acted in ONE TAKE, with Andy switching between Smeagol and Gollum on the fly! An amazing performance.

    The wizards each had a different role in the fight against Sauron. The gray wizard was a poor traveller who stirred courage, comforted the weak, and assisted the lowly. He was always very powerful, but retained his power to be a friend, not a leader. The white wizard was the leader in the fight against Sauron. Saruman definitely fails at this, so after Gandalf dies to fulfill his role as the gray wizard, he is sent back to do the work Saruman neglected. He is not "more powerful" but can now use his full power since he is the leader of the fight against evil.

    30:32 Why did Theoden not kill Grima? There were plot reasons, but I think there was a practical reason as well. Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon and understood the feudal system. A medieval fief runs on trust, the lord must be seen to keep faith with his men. Grima had served Theoden for many years, and may once have been a loyal man of Rohan. The most he could be accused of was giving Theoden bad advice. If Theoden had killed Grima in hot blood after his years of service without any public evidence of crimes, he could lose the loyalty of his men. They might become concerned he could treat them the same way.

    It's not really explained in the movies, but in the books (especially The Hobbit), hobbits have a natural ability to move quickly and quietly, and thus evade detection. Being small and plain helps in this. Knowing this about them helps to clarify certain aspects of their adventures.

    "So is he... even more powerful now?" in reference to Gandalf. Sort of. Olorin is Gandalf's Maiar name. He's a being even more ancient than Arda (the world). He was sent to Middle Earth from Valinor (home of the "gods") in order to help steer the course of events and help against Sauron. He feared Sauron and deferred to Saruman's wisdom, not wanting the task given to him. He faced his death with the Balrog, another Maiar who served Morgoth's cause along with Sauron, and he was victorious before dying. He wasn't directly more powerful when he returned, but you could say facing his fears both of a foe on Sauron's level as well as death, and then having communion with the divine, meant that he was far more confident and bold when he was returned to his body, which unleashed his full power/potential. Power scaling in lotr is kind of weird and subtle, but Gandalf is likely the strongest character fighting for the light.

    I guess I’ll be the first one to say - the actor that played Aragorn broke his toes when he kicked the helmet. They repeated the shot over and over because they were trying to get the helmet to be kicked as close to the camera as possible and on the last try it happened and that’s why his scream was so real. Another cool thing - When Sméagol is talking to his other personality, his eyes change depending on who’s in control. Sméagol has larger pupils and Gollum has smaller ones

    30:36 I think Aragorn wanted to save Theoden the dark stain of him suddenly being 'alive' again and then having so many people witness him slaughter someone in broad daylight. It wouldn't have looked good on his part to have done it right there and then. Remember, Aragorn is older than Theoden and probably wanted to save him from committing such an act. It's totally justifiable ofcourse.

    So this is a story not highlighted in most comments but the Dwarves and the Ents are kind of brothers and sisters on thier own right. Aule created the Dwarves so he can teach them smithing and crafts and were adopted by Eru Illuvatar as his own, but then after knowing this Yavanna, Valar of the Trees and Forest, wife of Aule pleaded to Eru Illuvatar for permission to give life to her trees to they can protect themselves against the axes of the Dwarves.

    This will help make sense of the movies. Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”

    The part about the dead marshes includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & Thranduil’s father Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[Elwë], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And Lùthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff. One thing to add though is this scene resembles a lot from the other battle Tolkien was involved in called The Battle Of Somme. Look into it and tell me your thoughts.

    Part 1 So, I'm not sure you really wanted an explanation, but Gandalf isn't a man, and can't really die, at least not in the same way that we would think about it. It's very complicated. Oh, boy! I'll try and give you a shorter version of this with out going too much into the weeds, but it's still likely to not make much sense. Also, keep in mind that I haven't read any of the books. I've just seen the movies, and have been watching videos here on KZread in attempt to figure it out myself, but I'm still learning. Tolkien spent like 50 years creating this world and was still doing so when he died, so he never really finished. Sometimes he changed stuff years later, so there's sometimes more than one way he described things at different times that are conflicting, and people argue over which is accurate, etc. Then after he died, his son spent his whole life up until his own death a couple years ago studying his father's notes and explaining it to the rest of us. So, it's a whole thing, but he, and now a lot of other people, take it all very seriously. There is a definite structure to how things work that is extremely detailed. He was very disciplined and consistent about it, despite sometimes changing his mind. He portrayed life, death, and the afterlife in his own way, that is sometimes reflective of how we do, but also very different than how our society normally thinks about it, and the rules are not the same for everyone. The afterlife is kind of complicated, and I'm not going to try and explain it now, but just for example, the way things work for Elves isn't the same as for men. (Just to explain why I keep using man/men, Tolkien never uses the word human, and he's a language expert, he's very particular of the words he uses because that's his thing. Even though it's basically the same thing, human is a word related to us, to our reality, but his world is something of it's own. In his world, there exists a race, or species, called Men, but they are also their own thing. They are not humans, they are not us, just as his world is not the same as ours.) There's also a hierarchy of different level of "gods" if you will. Probably not the right word to describe it, but you get the picture. It's also complicated, but the brief breakdown is that Eru Illuvatar is basically the real main God god. He is the supreme being that is the real creator of existence and all life, and father of all. He lives alone in a place called the timeless halls, which is some where outside and beyond the universe. Or something like that, I don't know. You could kind of think of it as heaven, but there are also other places in the universe that are kind of like heaven. Eru Illuvatar doesn't leave there. He just kind of hangs out watching over his children, I guess. (To Be Continued)

  • @richiecabral3602

    @richiecabral3602

    Part 2 First, Eru Illuvatar creates his first children, the Ainur. They are something like immortal spirits? The Ainur are broken up into two groups, the Valar and the Maiar. The Valar are basically like a level of lesser gods and goddesses below Eru Illuvatar. The Maiar are one level below them, like demi-gods, or angels and demons maybe, and they serve the Valar. I'm not going to get too into it for the sake of simplicity, but Eru Illuvatar and his Ainur create the universe, and then later, the Valar create Arda, which is the name of the planet where Middle Earth exists. It's not Earth as we know it, it's Arda, and Middle Earth is basically just a continent on Arda. To the west of Middle Earth, across the sea, is another small island like continent called Valinor. That's where the Valar and Maiar live, and later the Valar invited the Elves to live there with them. That's a whole other story I'm not going to really get into, but the Elves were the first of Eru Illuvatar's children that he created himself and placed in Middle Earth. Some went to Valinor, later some went back, it's a whole long thing, but in the movies, when the Elves talk about going to the undying lands, they're talking about going back to Valinor, which could also be considered to be like a heaven. So, before Sauron, there was his master. The first dark lord. Melkor, and then later his name changed to Morgoth, was originally one of, and the most powerful of the Valar. You can kind of think of him as a rebel angel like Satan. He created evil and discord and introduced it to the universe. Then the rest of the Valar kicked him out of the Valar for being a dick. Later after he sort of paid some penance, they eventually let him come to Valinor, but he was still a dick, and got kicked out again. Morgoth was the original dark lord that wanted to take control of Middle Earth. Suaron was one of his many Maiar, that was kind of like his second in command. The Balrog, the fiery devil monster that Gandalf fought, was also one of his Maiar. There were others. There were a few different wars that the Valar fought against Morgoth, and every time they did, they caused a lot of damage to Middle Earth because I guess when gods go to war, they fuck some shit up in the process. So, the Valar decided it wasn't a good idea to keep doing that. So, instead they just decided to hang out in Valinor, and kind of do nothing about Morgoth. So the Elves and Men were left to deal with him. Again a much longer story. The Valar wanted to help them, but technically, they weren't allowed to. Elves and Men, like the Ainur, were the sole creation of Eru Illuvatar. He gave Dwarves, and whatever else, life too, but they were sort of created by the Valar, or whatever, first before he got involved. I don't know exactly. Like I said, it gets confusing, but even though everyone is technically the children of Eru Illuvatar, as his sole creation, Elves and Men were given the self reliance to determine their own fate for themselves, and apparently big Daddy doesn't like it when anyone fucks with his children. So, even if they were trying to help, the Valar were not supposed to get too involved, but it's really kind of unclear to me where the line was, or what would happen to them if they crossed it. The Valar did invite the Elves to live with them in Valinor. Morgoth also definitely fucked with them, but I don't know that Eru Illuvatar ever did anything about it. So, I'm not sure what would really happen if you broke the rules, but the Valar seemed like they were worried about pissing off big daddy. They did still help, but they would find ways of doing it on the down low, so it wasn't so obvious. (To Be Continued)

    @richiecabral3602

    Part 3 Anyways, Morgoth was eventually defeated, and Sauron went into hiding, would pop up here and there, but was biding his time to gather together the power to finish his master's work. One of the things the Valar did to help, was to send the Estari, or wizards to Middle Earth. They were Maiar just like Sauron was, so the Valar were concerned about them falling into the same fate of becoming power hungry and wanting to take control over Elves and Men for their own purposes. So, they were stripped of some of their "powers", let's call it that for now, and they were made to embody old men. Their purpose was to aid Elves and Men by providing counsel, educate, and when needed use what limited powers they had left, but they were not allowed to take a position of leadership or control over Elves or Men. Essentially, they were supposed to assume a position of assistance without straight out telling them what to do, or just doing it for them. Depending on which version Tolkien wrote at two different times, there were 4 or 5 wizards. The movies make it seem like theirs some kind of hierarchy to their colors, or that different colors mean different things, but from what I've seen, the colors of the wizards are kind of arbitrary. The first to be sent was either one, or two, blue wizard/s. We don't really know much of anything about them. So, to understand what I mean by that, basically all of the lore of Tolkien's world is explained to us from the point of view of the Elves. It's their history of Middle Earth because they were the first of Eru Illuvatar's children to be placed on Middle Earth, are sort of immortal, or at least live incredibly long lifes, so have been around the longest, they had a relationship with, and some of them lived with the Valar in Valinor, learned from them, etc. So, I guess Tolkien felt they were the best able to keep track of the history, but they didn't know everything, and basically we only know whatever they knew. So, basically after arriving in Middle Earth, the blue wizard/s, just fucked off, maybe went into the far east where Elves never went, and did whatever. There was a brown wizard, but he wasn't too into doing what he was supposed to be doing. He sometimes got involved in whatever was going on, but mainly he just liked being away from it all. So, he mainly hung out in the forests communing with the plants and animals, or whatever. So, for a long time, the only wizards that were actually doing what they were sent for was Sarumon and Gandalf. Sarumon was good originally, they both worked together when needed, but Sarumon kind of became the lead wizard, but only really because Gandalf never really was ambitious enough to want to, even when Saruman wanted him to be. They both existed on Middle Earth serving their purpose though, for one or two thousand years (which sounds like a long time for a Man, but isn't as long a time for an Elf, and probably ain't shit for a Maiar), but while Saruman maybe spent his time involved with established powers, Gandalf chose to also just wander around, explore Middle Earth, learn more about it, meet different people, establish relationships, educate, and get involved more in that way. And, we know that in the end, Saruman who had served his purpose for so long, slowly grew power hungry, even baited his time to outpower Sauron, and flipped to the dark side, so to speak, and ultimately became the very thing he wasn't supposed to be. In the end, Gandalf was the only wizard that did exactly what he was supposed to, and fulfilled the purpose of the Estari. (To Be Continued)

    Part 4 So super long way around the barn, my point is that Gandalf is not a "man". He's a Maiar. He's an immortal spirits. He can't die like a man would die. His embodiment on Middle Earth that he had been existing as could die, but then as a Maiar, he'd just go back to Valinor, or I guess maybe elsewhere that I don't know in the universe, where he'd still exist in another form. The Valar, or maybe even Eru Illuvatar himself can just send him back to Middle Earth if they want to, and in any form they want to. I don't know how it's explained in the books, but prior to being made an Estari, he already existed as a Maiar, and he was probably capable of so much more than we know of him. They could level him up when they send him back, but other than just a real easy visual representation of change, and equality or superiority to Saruman, I don't think it mattered that he was grey and became white. I don't know of it would've mattered if he was purple short of narrative technique. (The End)

    It's a free "country," @@Eowyn187... However, JRR Tolkien allowed these 2 villains to live much longer than we might like, cuz their characters have important roles still to play! I won't say what, cuz "spoilers"!!!

    You clearly have not read the books, or even seen ROTK film,@@Eowyn187... He does something no one else can do, just like Gollum does near the end.

    @@fredkrissman6527 Also, one of the main "hidden" messages that Tolkien put in his work is that are the little acts of pity and mercy we do everyday (like Bilbo sparing Gollum's life, or Aragorn leaving Grima alive) that really, in the end, change/save the world. Nobody should give death carelessly, as Gandalf warned Frodo in the first movie!
