the first number doesnt matter as much. the 2nd number matters more. the engine is cold for a few seconds, its warm/hot 99 percent of the time so you want oil thats thick enough to protect when the engine is working hard

Stick with either 5w30 or 5w40, regardless if oem recommends 0w16/20, unless you live in Antarctica.

Between these two oil viscosities, the 0W 20 is the best choice, because it covers a lower range of colder temperatures. Of course, if you live in a relatively warm climate all year long, it doesn't matter which one you use at all.

In Gcc high temperature also Honda recommended in manual 0w-20… Is it worth!!!

If you are liveing in -35c weather then go for the 0w you´ll be good for -40c. As others have said....."go with the 30 or 40 depending on how hot it gets.

At freezing or above, you cant discern any difference between 0wXX or 5wXX. Now, at -20 and below, it starts to show up the 0wXX advantage.

I’ve never used 0W-20 on my 2016 KIA Forte LX 1.8L Sedan since the oil cap says that it uses 5W-20. I don’t live where there is extreme cold temperatures and always used and still use 5W-20. But if I was to live in an area where it snows then I can switch to 0W-20?

In your car, 0W-30 would be better.

modern car not more then 5 years old should use 0w20 (hybrids made in japan 0w16). If you run not hybrid and live in very hot temperatures like in Dubai, Morocco or in other desert, you should use something like SAE30 or SEA40. but if u live like Englishman or even cold like Russia, just use your manual advice and use modern 100% synthetic or full synthetic oils that is recommended by the manufacturer. It means almost nothing in comparison between those two oil grade - 0w20 and 5w20. You can look in chart about viscosity in different temps and grade, it calls "SAE J300". The most influence think of friction in engine is your maintenance of oil changes. Oil change each 5k miles, should decrease wear of engine dramatically in few times even, not like changing oil each 10k miles. All oils are from same company, difference is some additives. I can say only one think - there is no real truth. All oils lubricates (API certificated). Keep eye on the oil temperature sometimes, and everything will be fine. Even today in modern cars oil is cooled with the antifreeze in the oil cooler. If you not rising with it none stop for 30 mins or more, its same to use anything manufacturer is offered and you have nothing to think of, but only service it each 5k miles. and your engine will be smooth and fine.

Usually the question is between 0W-20 and 5W-30. Once a year oil change, even 14-16 months with extended oil and filter should not cause a real time problem in your case Car companies created these very thin oils to help achieve CAFE standards..

Just be clear, no engineer at any car company calls for cars to use these new lightweight oils. This is EPA mandates for fuel economy. Take any car produced by any manufacturer and look at main bearing or other clearances between lubricated parts. They have not changed in 10 -20 years, yet recommended oils have been thinned out TWICE. Look at any SAE oil chart, the highest recommended outdoor temperature to use 20 weight oil is 68F!!!

"In this video we have taken an indepth look" No, in my opinion there is no in depth here when just same info is repeated throughout the whole video. It is like comparing shoes by size as the only difference between them! One is 9 and the other one is 9.5. But that one use leather and the other rubber makes a big difference that we don't care about. Like if one oil ILSAC GF-6 vs ILSAC GF-5 (as the old images show us). Just to look at shoe size or oil viscosity that is as close as it can be gives us no depth of anything. That they had different viscosity or shoe size that we can already see on the numbers 0w vs 5w or 9 vs 9.5.💕 But it were nice rendering of engines anyway. 😉

I would use the manufacturer recommended oil in FULL SYNTHETIC and add some Lucas oil additive. The full synthetic high mileage oil is good to use every other oil change as well. My engines run forever in honest truth. I use the full synthetic with Seafoam in my gas tank and never had engine problems for decades what so ever.

It could be better to switch to 5w-30 or 0W-30, but make sure you use high mileage oil as they have a lot more swelling additives, which means these additives will make the engine seals inside swell and prevent or reduce oil leaks and reduce oil burning. This is what I’d done to my 08 Lancer and 05 Pilot, and they don’t burn oil as much as they used to anymore.

You can switch to 5w-30 high mileage, it might slow the oil burn. Add NO oil additives. With your next car, go no thinner than 5w-20. 0w-20 is too thin.

Reason your oil is burning, you probably have bad pistons rings or you not changing your oil frequently. I highly recommend you use high mileage synthetic oil to help slow down oil consumption and change the oil and filter 3k-5k miles. High mileage oil is more thicker at operating temperatures than regular oil, use the viscosity your owners manual recommend you.

Use the oil viscosity your car calls for. I recommend you use Castrol Edge or Valvoline extended protection or Toyota genuine oil. If you don't live in temperatures over 100 degrees you'll be fine.

My 2014 truck calls for 0w-20 but it burns oil . What the next thicker oil ? Any help please

You probably have bad pistons rings or you not changing your oil regularly. If you have a higher mileage engine I recommend you using a high mileage oil or good brand oil.

Using a higher viscosity could damage the engine because the oil won't flow as it should in its hydraulic functions within the engine. If your engine cooling system is working, the 0w-20 is fine. If your engine is overheating, thicker oil won't help cool it.

@@tomasnokechtesledger1786 the oil of 0w flows better than 10w, 15w, 20w at freezing. Its adherence to parts is not wholly a function of viscosity. Cold cranking relies on residual film until thd oil begins to flow Those that have the more viscous behavior at higher, operating, temps will not flow through the hydraulics as well as the lowers and would behave out of spec. and damage/ruin the engine. The oil recommendations are for proper operation, not to meet a government standard(CorporateAverageFuelEconomy) once the vehicle reaches the consumer. That is why VVT, etc was designed to meet the average. If you want to run 20w-50 in your 0w or 5w engine go ahead and report back how it works out. I will stick to the OEM recommendations.

I took my car to a different shop that wasn't Dodge due to them veing 3weeks backed up and they put 5w20 in my car when my 2.0 Dart takes SAE 0w20. Will that mess up my engine? I'm extremely pissed because I told them my car is full synthetic and I normally pay $92 w/tire rotation at my dealer where I got it from.

Will have no ill effect whatsoever. Although machined clearances have gotten smaller in modern engines, the 5w20 is also most commonly a full synthetic and your engine will have no qualms at all with it.

Thanks for the response yall. I was actually going to Houston with 99+ temps. They told me it was a misprint due to them getting a new label printer so I was 0w20. I just wanted to make sure because I've had my baby for 7yrs and only had to fix the normal wear and tear being the only owner.

If a truck used 5w20 but I want to put 0w20 full synthetic, will it be ok on my truck?

If its running fine in 5w20, yes. But I doubt you or the engine would feel any difference, when above freezing temperatures. If it ran only in conventionals, it will get a very mild cleaning effect from the pure synthetic.

If it's winter, and it gets well below freezing then I say go for it. If I had more intervals per year on my vehicles, I'd mess with the first number every time and probably never use the first number recommendation. 5w-30 recommendation right before winter I would switch to 0w-30, and then with spring and an end to freezing temps, I'd switch right into 10w-30. If I could guarantee I was starting my car in my heated garage everytime in the winter, and leaving it parked outside no longer than a couple hours (depending on exactly how cold it is) before I got back in it and drove it again, then I would run 10w-30 in it over the winter. If I put 7500 miles on it from June 15 to August 30, when it does not generally drop below 60 degrees overnight (save for a cold front of a storm moving through) and easily reaches 90-100 degrees many days, I would even take a go with SAE30 for that period. My vehicles don't have much trade-in value left as they're too old, and so it wouldn't be a very expensive lesson for me. The manual recommendations were written to cover as many of the foreseeable driving conditions as possible. Before synthetics we're as popular as they are now, every manufacturer had ambient temperature guidelines. Now days, I am seeing manuals that have one recommendation and no consideration of ambient temperatures. I think synthetics are so good with heat stability, and flow at low temperatures, all they have to do is determine the performance in a lab, and if they can rest on consumers using synthetics (i.e. GM6094M), they can make one recommendation for everyone from Maine to Florida and we the consumers can rest confident that the many considerations the maker had to score will give us a good balance of wear protection, performance, and longevity. All we have to do is follow the specs, check things under the hood periodically between intervals, and get the intervals done.

To make a 0w oil it has to start with better base stocks.

My 2021 4 cyl car calls for 0w20 oil. But I accidentally bought 5w20 and didn't notice until I had drained the engine. We've got some cold weather coming in tomorrow... down to 5°F overnight. The car is garaged so not that cold when I start it in the morning. Will I damage the engine running the higher viscosity until the next oil change?

The 0W-20 operates within the 5W-20 oils range but not the other way around. You can use a 0W-20 in place of 5W-20, but not the other way around as the 5W-20 will have greater resistance to flow upon startup preventing it from getting to moving parts. Beyond that...your call.

You have nothing to fear. Carmakers recommend 0w-20 because it is thinner and provides a tiny, tiny (but not real-world noticeable) increase in fuel economy. This helps carmakers reach fuel economy goals, at the expense of engine longevity. You want my advice? Stick with 5w-20. That 0w-20 stuff is too thin, it's not enough protection for a stressed, high-temp engine over the long term.....
