Thx for the video. Going to try this on my 17 Crosstrek whose belt broke during a deep freeze. It looked like you left the tensioner looser than it was when the first belt was installed (I didn’t see you turn it back counterclockwise to re-tension). Is it self-tensioning in that case? I’m concerned that if I start the engine and the belt is too loose it’ll cause mayhem or just ruin the new belt.

It is a self tensioning unit. The slack look is from the tensioner pushing against the belt. The belt does not allow the tensioner to go all the way, like it does when there is no belt. This tensioner is designed to actually being tightened when you push to release the belt and never actually loosening anything except the tensioner's internal spring. Ultimately, as long as the belt is tight and tensioner is in that "loose" looking position so it continues to put pressure on the belt when the car is on, you are fine. Good luck.

@@FiveThousandYT thanks so much. Made sense once I actually got under the hood. Turns out my tension pulley had bit the dust which chewed up my serpentine belt. $70, 5-minute fix that would’ve cost hundreds at the shop. Thanks again!

@@chriskaprys Aw man. That sucks to hear but also good to hear you got it taken care of before serious engine damage happened. Something else I would recommend, if you have time and if you haven't already, take the belt off again and by hand spin all of the pulleys. Make sure all pulleys spin freely without any gritty or grinding sounds. Followed by feeling the outside of the pulleys that are suppose to be smooth (idler pulley) and check for any imperfections (usually rust or dirt build up). Obviously we don't want you to run into this issue again. I recommend it because it is quick and easy to do and idler pulleys (the ones that are connected directly to the engine and don't actually run anything) are known to go bad. I had one idler pulley start getting gritty sounding and replacing it was super easy.

@@FiveThousandYT indeed. In fact I also did that before replacing the belt, as per your recommendation in the video. Everything (except crank) turned smoothly and was free of dirt. Thanks for the great advice!

Would this installation process be the same if replacing a damaged belt due to it fraying while in rotation? Should there be any timing of the pullies before installing the new belt in that situation? I already had a mouse nimble on my 2017 Forester belt and had to get the car towed! Now I keep a spare belt in the car just in case it happens again while I'm in the middle of nowhere.

Sorry for the delayed response. Process would be the same unless you have something else damaged. This belt is for accessories (alternator, A/C, and crank), nothing timing related. If you had the car towed, would the car not start at all? You most likely have something else wrong. On the other hand, if the accessory belt popped and you were driving with no belt it would mean your battery wasn't charging so you ended up with a dead battery. I digress though. My suggestion at this point is because you had fraying going on to check, to the best of your ability, for any loose pieces that may be stuck behind each of the pulls. With the car off, when the belt is off try to spin each pulley by hand and make sure it doesn't sound like a grinding or like something is wedged behind it slowing it down. The only one you shouldn't be able to turn is the crank. Other than that you should be good. Don't over think it and be mindful of how the belt is routed through all the pulleys. Good luck.

Sorry, I do not have that information. You might try taking a piece of string and running it around the 2 pulleys (plus the tensioner), then measure the length of the string, and try to find the closest matching length from another vehicle.
