How to Replace a Serpentine Belt
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
How to replace a serpentine belt on a VW Tiguan or any 2.0t CCTA/CBFA Volkswagen engine. The Audi 2.0t will be a similar process. This is a step by step DIY showing exactly how to remove and install a serpentine belt. If your serpentine belt is noisy, has a squeal, or is simply worn out, it may be time to replace it. Thanks to eBay Motors for helping me bring this DIY to you.

2 days ago, honda dealer charged $246 for labor and $106 for part. Learned my lesson
Did it in my driveway in about 20 minutes in the dark. Saved me $300 over the stealership which I absolutely couldn’t afford. Thank you so much!

I'm a 56 year old heart and lungs patient, your video gave me the confidence to fix my 1990 olds 98' belt! I am humbled by this mechanic and grateful for your straight on approach, looks like my 269,458 will roll on!
I really appreciate this. I'm only 16 but I really want to have the knowledge on stuff like this. Thank you- you made it really simple

Heck yes
Wow this was so helpful, my dealership was quoting $500 to replace the belt. I bought a replacement for $28 and a long ratchet for $35. It took about 40 minutes as it took me awhile to grasp how to get the belt around the furthest hub without taking the tire off, but it is within anyone's skill to do. I know mechanics need to make a living too, but I just don't see how a 900 percent mark-up is justifiable.

How did you go it without removing the tire ?
Our Passat belt snapped on road trip, quoted £571 to recover and fix......due to this video myself and my wife were able to do this on our own at the side of the road saving us hundreds of pounds......Truly the best and most honest mechanic on KZread (and perhaps the whole world) Big appreciation, wish more mechanics were like this 🙌🙌

This is a great video. I used a Allen wrench to secure tensioner. Note: The new belt is so tight that you need to release a lot more tension on belt. It takes a "newbie" about 20-30 minutes to do this job. HM makes it look easy but he also makes you comfortable that you can do it. Believe me, you can do it!
Just did this on my wife's 2017 Tiguan. Pulling the serpentine belt tensioner... Had to remove a plastic A/C bracket near the headlight and use a 3/8 ratchet with a 12 point 17MM socket and a jack handle to get JUST ENOUGH clearence to stick the allen key in there. Of course VW has a custom tool for this job... Also way easier to replace the belt with the passenger wheel liner off. Thanks Chuck!
Thanks for taking the time off to be well prepared for this demonstration. Your explanation and tools used help to build my confidence and ability in installing serpentine belts. I will be looking out for more of your videos.
You just saved me a ton of time trying to figure it out.. a million thanks!!!
Found this video today. Thank you for the tips to change this belt on my own.
Here 5 years later lol. So glad you mentioned the roller thing. Was about to install my belt and alternator. Just spun mine and they're so lose 😂. Definitely wouldn't have thought of that!
Great video man, the tight camera angles really help. Will have to use this week I finally decide to replace mine
Thank you... You saved me a lot of time, headache and money with this one!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Charles. I will do it on my MK4 Golf next week. Happy New Year.
Just did this and the alternator on my 2010 Cc thanks to your video! You're number 1
Gotta do this tomorrow morning. Thanks for the video, I hope my 2013 Tiguan S/E/L is as easy to do as you have it. I can't pull the wheel etc. but I think I can get to everything.
Dear humble mechanic, I appreciate you posting this video. I had a freak accident where a rat decided to take a snooze inside my engine bay and caught inside the serpentine belt. My serpentine belt jumped off its tracks after I decided to drive away. I guess the rat got scared and jumped inside the serpentine belt pulley system. Which caused my entire serpentine belt to jump off the pulley system and returned to its rubber band form. This happened on my 2017 Jetta. Unfortunately this year of Jetta does not have the metric bolt in the center of the pulley but separate on top. What's your video has seriously saved me. Thank you so much ❤️ I would have never gotten my car fixed if i would have taken it to the the dealer which is close now because of the Covid-19. I can appreciate this video very much.

Its easy though, the knob is on the driver's side, right near the front bumper. Open it, flush it, refill with new stuff.
Great vid! Hey Charles, are those tensioners adjustable? The reason I ask is, the wrench slipped on the pulley nut causing the tensioner to spring back forcefully and now the back plate won't align to get the allen key in. (The hole in the back plate looks to be about 30° out).
wow nice job
My dear alero has a dry belt and I’m mustering the courage to get this done. Looks easy, thank goodness. Not in the financial place to take to the mechanic
I am loving this!

Is it automatic belt tensioner? I think because of that pin you use it is. Thank you for the film, as always very detailed and informative.
I recently did a supercharger belt on a Audi S4 with 3.0T. It was tight but not a bad job. I couldnt believe how much the dealer wanted to replace just the belt without tensioner

They can be tricky when space is tight
I’ve found many of the 2.0TSI engines to have a supercharger like whine. Usually it is a bad roller bearing on the serpentine belt tensioner.
When purchasing a new belt i see this -> Service Tip: Always replace belts and tensioners together. Old tensioners will reduce a belt's lifespan, and can lead to issues such as overheating, a dead battery, diminished power steering, or poor air conditioning performance. I have never heard of this and would only replace the tensioner if it's bad following the advice of HumbleMechanic to test it. Is this just a way to have people buy more parts?
Any advice or pointers when replacing the drive belt tensioner? It's for a 2009 MKV GTi with the TSI engine. It makes a cricket noise when I accelerate with the a/c on.
I was about half way out of my like 2 mile driveway today and then one of my Tacoma’s 3 ran belts just snapped so that was fun

That lock pin is a great idea the one you're using because my neighbors did not have the right lock pin and they thought they need it the right lock pin and once we saw this video it was done deal they were struggling for over 2 hours and once we watch this video it was quick. Thank you man ‼️
Thanks
Wow I had no Idea how simple this was. I was expecting to have to get a mechanic to lift the engine out to change it but instead I did it myself in 5 minutes with a tire iron on my front street
Hi, I have a 2010 Tiguan S 4motion TS1 1.4 Petrol, is it much the same as this to do ? still a d.i.y job ? thanks for any info.
I'll check the drug on all pulleys before I put the belt, thank you. But do you need to clean the surface of pulleys with something? I sprayed some rusty bolts and other metal parts inside the engine bay with "Powerful Rust and Corrosion Protection" penetrant and lubricant (slightly, but still some probably got on those pulleys. Belt is off). It is Fluid Film. Probably now I need to clean all the pulleys (including a new accelerator pulley) with something? Or it is O'K and actually will be protecting them from possible rust?
Hey humblemechanic can you please help me out. I can’t seem to find a video on R32 specific belt removal. Do I have to remove the power steering pump bracket? That’s the only thing in the way from the belt coming off of the car. Could it possibly have been put on wrong?
Do you know how to remove the pulley itself? I’d like to replace both belt and pulley at the same time.
Thanks, I needed this because I need to change an alternator and it seems every video I see on that, the belt is already removed, so this fills in the gap for that.
Can get the tensioner to release enough to get the belt back on the alternator of a 2010 Mazda CX-9. Any ideas or tips to help. We did not use a tensioner lock pin.
Hi does this appt to VE Routan or Town and Country ? Is this vid about timing belt or belt for power steering alternator etc?
Thanks it looks easy for a dummy like me..
can you bypass the ac with a shorter belt? it's never worked in my car and I think the bearings in the pulley are on their way out. I've got an ea888 2.0 tsi
Is it hard to change the timing belt on a 2020 Tiguan ? , thinking about doing it myself or just might take it to my mechanic
You make this look so easy but I'd probably mess it up as I'm not very mechanically inclined lol. A mechanic told me its going to cost me $377 Canadian to replace mine in my 2000 vw beetle. He said there were cracks in it and should be replaced.
@HumbleMechanic
5 жыл бұрын
Ouch. That seems expensive but it varies. What engine in the beetle? The TDI is not fun. The rest aren’t too bad
I guess my mechanics messed up after changing alternator I was driving after mechanic and after like 10km I heard popping sounds as something was hitting something I stopped and one belt almost snapped and another one that is connected to alternator almost fell off
Ive tried changing 2 belts. Despite tensioner being released as far as possible both belts were a pain. On my Camry i just used old belt which appeared in good shape because I could not get new one on. On my sons VW i was able to force it on far enough that i bump started the car and it pulled it up into place. Why dont they give plenty of release so it goes right on. The vw tensioner had a physical stop and a pin. Yet I had to force that belt. Any way to pre stretch the belt or something?
Mines completely came off but i still made it home should i just put a new belt on and tension pulley
This was stupid hard to do on my 07 mini. I couldn’t release tension. Took me like 5 hrs. I ended up setting a block under the tensioner and lowering the car down onto it. There has got to be an easier way. A decent portion of that time was changing the friction wheel. Nightmare. The internet seems to think you can just push on it with a pry bar. I had to set my cars weight on it and bounce a little(no one was under it, obviously) to get it far enough back to lock.

what is the pin for? do you need to put one in while doing this?
So I can I personally do it from just the top of the car? or would it be safer to get under it?

This wouldn't work on a 2017 VW Golf would it? I don't see a place for the lock pin, unless the hole at the center pivot of the tensioner is that spot. I needed to know this, my belt came off last year and I could not figure out how to get it back on.
