Hello Pam I learn so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing all this information. question: when you mount paper on panel, do you treat the surface to protect it in any way? Isn't there the possibility of the work tearing,etc.? Is there a varnish or spray medium that could coat the entire surface when finished?

Hi Pamela, thank you so much for your videos. I feel like you teach me some new things every time I watch one. I have been a professional painter for about 30 years, but, there is always something new to learn. I mostly paint on stretched canvas and recently watched your videos on working on paper.(I just bought some on amazon). I have a carpenter who can build me what you call "cradle" frames for the pieces, and get the birch wood. If I build a piece (like you did) at 48 x 48, do you typically use a 1/4 inch piece of wood (depth) or a half inch. I am wondering because of the weight and the fact that the larger you go, the more chance to warp. Of course he would put the framing (around the back) as well. Do you ever paint the sides of your pieces for galleries? I notice you left that with the wood on it, rather than painting.

Thanks so much for this helpful video! Do you recommend sealing the wood panels (with gloss medium or GAC 100) before adhering the paper? I've heard that chemicals in the wood can leach into the paper over time and discolor it. Also, do you varnish/seal the paper piece before or after adhering it and if so, what do you use for that?

You don't paint the panel with GAC 100 ? I thought you said to do that in another video but maybe that was someone else.

Don't you get PVA squeezing out on the sides when you brayer it? If I don't use enough glue (to the point where its oozes a little, I get gaps along the edges where there is missing glue.

The boards must be really heavy. How much to ship? Do you ever make your own cradled panels?

Hi Pamela, Thank you for showing this, and for answering my question on "Instagram". Wondering why you don't coat the back of the paper/painting, to seal it and then let dry, both, board and painting and then add the "glue" layer. This was the way I was taught, I found after awhile I would sometimes get bubbles even after weighing it down and waiting overnight. Hence the sealing first. It mostly happens on very large pieces. Also, is there a reason you don't "seal" the back of your panels....here again I had troubles, they didn't come up for about 4 years, my panels started coming apart, (the frame work). My painting friends all said that they "seal" the back and sides with an acrylic varnish they buy at the hardware store, just wondering. My panels were custom made and also from "Amerstand". May also just be our area, Seattle, very moist, but the paintings were stored at room temp for the most part. LOVE your work and enjoy learning from these videos. Hope to take the course someday. Thank you also for your hard work in making these.

Francesca - these are all really great questions! I did at first try putting the Lineco glue on the back of the painting and was kind of shocked to see how much the paper expanded- to the point where the lines and shapes of the four sheets of paper did not line up anymore. I didn’t think of letting the glue dry - I just adhered it to the wet glue on the panel and then had to paint a little more to make everything line up. After I saw how much the Arches oil paper expanded, I didn’t think that could be very good for a cam/oil painting! I’m not sure about sealing the wood on the back- it sounds like a good idea to me but I have not heard this before so I will try and find more info on this- thank you for mentioning it 😉 Thanks so much for commenting here and yes I’d love to “meet you” in the class someday! Catherine - I have someone’s had them made locally by a cabinet maker and they are Baltic birch 1/8” tops and please check my resources section at www.artandsuccess.com for the other panels I use 😊

You could, but the wood panel doesn’t need the paper. I work in paper today save space 😄

Hi Mo - great question - I usually keep it rather simple as I like the look of the raw wood. I rub some plain cold wax medium - about two coat - letting it dry in between, and then leave it! If I have lots of paint on the cradle, I will sand it off and paint either acrylic or cwm/oils on the sides. :) Best, Pam

Hey there-I don’t usually bug too much because I already add Galkyd gel to my paint which leads to a satin shine -if you let your final coat of cold wax medium dry, just use a cotton cloth and buff til you get the desired shine 😉

great video, thankyou! I'll be doing this soon, as my oil paintings on paper are almost dry! Is the cradle you use sealed with a wood sealer? I often wonder if thats necessary? Im also wanting to try to paint straight onto wood panel. Do you know what are the best products to seal the wood panel and then prime for oil painting? thanks a million

So yes it is good to seal the wooden panel with two coats of acrylic gloss medium. Good to gesso before working with oils! 😊😊

oh my god after searching and searching I finally have a video that answers the exact question I had. Thank you very informative and easy to follow. Question: can I use this same technique with random paper or magazine cut outs on wood panel and then paint over it and do we have to lay another layer of medium over it to protect it?

I would experiment with this-the paper I am demonstrating is 140lb arches like paper with a liquid adhesive. Magazine paper is ver thin so I don’t think you can expect the very same results 😉

@@PamelaCaughey what about when artist add magazine cut outs to their art board and then paint over. I’ve seen stuff like that. Is this the same technique (I could be wrong maybe it’s thicker paper like the one you’ve used)

Hi just popping in here to say the process you're describing is called collage. You can use gel medium as a glue to add paper pieces to your wood panel. Using a clear coat with a UV protectant as a final coat is recommended to help prevent fading, but some collage artists just leave the plain paper with no finishing coat.

Hi Mark - thank you for stopping by and for your question (along with RuttRho's!). So, as time goes by, the cradled panels tend to build up! They take more room to store. So, in addition to the storage issue, it is a bit of a different experience working on Arches Oil paper that I continue to enjoy. Thus, I can run through a lot of paper, choose the ones I feel are worthy of being mounted on panel, and store the unmounted works in a flat file drawer. This saves me space and allows me to "edit" to create a more cohesive group if working toward an exhibition, etc. !!! Best, Pam ;)

@@zazzyman HI Mark - these are great questions too, thanks! So first, I use a nice strong tape, really just masking tape, and tape (in this case) all four sheets on the backside. I've tried less tacky tape like artist tape, painter's blue tape, etc but when the paint got heavy on the papers, they started to come undone so stronger tape is best (and masking tape is more tacky for sure - yet releases nicely from the Arches oil paper). With Arches oil paper, I've found it to be excellent with regard to holding lots of wet oil/cold wax - and no I don't treat it with anything - it has never been necessary. Perhaps when I work on paper, they are more quickly done and not as many layers, but I don't use a lot of gamsol at all either - it is mostly just cold wax and oils. However, I do plan on starting several paintings on paper using drippy paint, which has more gamsol content. :) Best, Pam

RuttRho I won’t speak for Pam, but for me it’s cost. Not only from a money point, but the cost of space, working on paper takes up less studio space. As I’m not a experienced as Pam, working on paper also allows me to crop my work. And an added bonus the first few layers tend to setup quicker on oil paper, compared to a panel.
