    Finally a video that explains everything I have told multiple shops and spent thousands of dollars fixing things that weren't broken. I know you probably won't even see this but I wanted to thank you. I have an 04 Hummer H2 with the same exact noise. I have spent the last year in and out of shops and now it's to the point of leaking pretty bad too. I am getting ready to drain and replace the fluid just to see if it gets me a few more months. I kinda doubt it, but worth a shot. Again, thank you for helping this old lady figure it out on her own.

    good video. it helped me alot. i had to do the job by myself though. Wifey helped me get the new unit out of the back of my other truck. that was about it. I tried but could not get her under the truck I was fixing. You definitely want to make sure you have the gear ratio that matches the rear differential. The only thing I might add is to remove the fill plug while draining. The old fluid comes out faster and it makes sure you get all of the old fluid out. Also 1/2 inch drive impact swivel sockets on an extension with an impact wrench gets those big mount bolts out pretty quick. and one last thing. kelvenguard's idea about removing the steering box bolts instead of the centerlink worked very well for me.

    Thank you so much for this video. It was the single reason I was able to do this job myself and not spend more money then I would’ve been able to. Just one point I wanted to make to maybe help others whom come across this video. Your initial assumptions that you did not have to take off that steering center link to get the diff out from under the truck was actually CORRECT. The steering center link does not have to be removed to get the front diff out. Once the diff is unbolted all you have to do is while you’re lowering the diff with the jack just turn it slightly up (clock wise) so that the part of the diff that connects to the drive shaft (u joint) is now facing up and then pull the diff slightly towards the passenger side of the vehicle. It easily clears the center link once you start to bring it down towards you and it comes right out. Do the opposite for installing the new one. Should’ve listened to your gut instinct! Ha ha. Regardless thanks again. You really helped me out big time. 👏

    Ok so my 2004 Escalade has the exact same issue , while driving and giving it gas it whines louder and let off it almost completely goes away , you can still hear it slightly but you give it gas it gets loud and kinda Grindy, I decided to change the fluid and the old fluid was brown and as thin as water ! Metal shavings on the plug too , was this indeed your issue and did swapping another diff solve your problem ? I’m picking up a front AWD diff today for 200 with 160k on it my Escalade has 246k I really hope this fixes it . How many miles did your original front diff go out at? How many miles does the new used one have on it? The gear oil in the new one was just as black as the first one. How do you know the new one didn't have any bearing issues? You could of bought a new reman one for not much more money with a warranty.

  • @RadFabz

    @RadFabz

    I think the original went bad at about 150k miles. I'm not sure about the miles on the new/used diff but I bought it from a friend that runs a parts yard,he gave me a good deal and warranty. I'm sure the old one was just the bearing but I have replaced those in the past and it didn't fix it, so this time I just went with changing the whole diff. It was much faster ,easier,and the cost of the new diff wasnt too bad compared to the profit I made on the sale of the vehicle . The new/used diff could have had a bearing issue as well,that's just the chance we take using used parts. Luckily it was good to go. No sounds or grinding. Thank you for watching the video and thanks for the comment. If you see that I'm doing something wrong or something that would have made the job easier,please comment.
