Soviet Lens Reviews

Hey everyone, I'm Alex, an amateur photographer from Perth, Western Australia. This channel is dedicated to exploring a world of lost treasures - the world of Soviet lenses. We'll take a look beyond the Helios-44 and back to a time where the latest & greatest optics didn't worry about milliseconds of faster autofocus. A time of post-war reprisals, mathematical genius, and Soviet ingenuity.

What is the max ISO the VIVO x100 Pro can shoot in in lowlight video? Like for example on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra I in the main camera app, Pro modus (4k & 1080p) I can go up to ISO 32.000 with Auto exposure and manual shutter can go to 1/8 sec. Am still doubting if I want to make the jump to the Vivo x100 Pro as I am planning to shoot video often in lowlight, (dynamic range isn't off such big importance for me, but the max ISO/exposure in lowlight video is.) Thx in advance.

😋 Alex, thanks for the review! 👍 I found it after I purchased this lens yesterday. Have you tried measuring its radiation level with a dosimeter? They say that lanthanum was used in its glass, but it seems that its radiation is purely nominal. It would be interesting to know. And it wouldn’t hurt to measure Era 6M for radiation level. There is no reliable information on that, so you have a first hand in this pile of cards! ❤️👍😅 Good luck! PS: a T-shirt with the Soviet quality mark is a bomb! 😋

Definitely not one to jump on. Get a Takumar 50/1.4 for a tenth the price. Maybe less, if you're lucky. Got an SMC version for about 80 money. One of the sharpest versions they made, and my sharpest lens by far. Even wide open, it would put up a battle for that Era stopped down. It's my only Japanese lens in a wave of Soviet lenses. But one that gets almost as much love as my Helios.

Soviet lenses were assembled with a hammer and obscene words. Because of this, there are so many defective products. The longer you use the lens, the more defects you find. It's good that you don't disassemble them for spare parts. But I also partly like them. It is relatively inexpensive. And a lot of types of Soviet lenses. I'm sure they were all copied from one or more other lenses.

@@SovietLensReviews Here are the lens differences: 1. Arsat H 1: 2 50mm has a rubberized focus ring, MS Helios-81H 2/50 has a metal focus ring 2. Arsat H 1: 2 50mm is an AI lens for Nikon cameras. MS Helios-81H 2/50 is something remotely reminiscent of an AI lens. 3. The lenses have different diaphragm blacking. At Arsat H 1: 2 50mm aperture blades are blackened much better than MS Helios-81H 2/50. Diaphragm blackening affects the reflection of light when shooting on closed diaphragms. 4. Different years of release. Logical that the lenses Arsat H 1: 2 50mm newer, which increases the chances of their normal preservation.

I have both tair 11a in mint condition and jupiter 37a mc slightly used but serviced. Prefer 37a most of the time. It’s smaller, sharper, and consistent across the frame. But i see someone may prefer tair for a portrait work for its wider aperture and creamy bokeh although jupiter has wonderfull bokeh even with its f3.5 aperture. Not much difference. Jupiter is a Sonar evolved design lens.

The old school single coatings are a double edged sword. I think they add boatloads of character on the silver Mir-1 37mm. On the other hand, I think the biotar optical design is particularly vulnerable to veiling flare and so that coating is not so fun on the helios 44. Likewise on the Helios 40, which has the worst contrast and flare resistance of any lens I've ever used and would really benefit from multicoating (the new production ones have it... for $600)

Just bought one in a market for €10 - used it on my Sony A7iii with an Urth M42 / E adapter and it's fantastic. The 12 aperture blades give images the nicest bokeh. It will be a permanent fixture in my camera bag. I think the f3.5 aperture puts off the 'wide open' shooters but that's not a problem for how I shoot pics. Didn't get a hood with it, so I'll be searching for one of those now.

I serviced many samples of this lens and what impresses is how thin the glass elements are and there is just 5 of them. If you realize that less glass is better, Pentax did a masterful job designing this entry level lens. The design and mechanics of this F2 is fantastic, helicoids and apertures run reliably smooth after 40+ years of use. Of all entry level nifty 50s, this one ranks HIGH in my book.

Hey, mate! Love your channel, and great review. I live in Vietnam and because of the old Comintern connection, there's plenty of cheap old Soviet glass here. I'm thinking of dropping for a MIR 20M, and I know you did a review on this one, but can't find it on your channel now. Did you take it down? Or am I hallucinating...Also, do you know of anyone who's done a DIY YT vid on how to declick this one? (I mean apart from sending it it Ironglass, there has to be an easy way...maybe?). my 'Soviet lens lady' also has a copy of your 20-N- and I like that it has that screw on from filter thing. The price difference is like $US25 between it and the 20M. Which would you recommend? Again thanks for your informative channel- and thanks for getting me addicted, too (I think).

@@SovietLensReviews I just found your review I thought was on the 20M, but actually it was on the 47K. My bad, sorry! I think it was the little kit of 3 filters that confused me. Ah, incidentally, my supplier can declick the 20M, but said it's better not to, coz it will affect the resale vale. Next mission- find someone who can replace the glass in the UV filter with a decent circle of 4-6stop ND glass. That'll fix my video needs. Cheers again, mate!.

What would you recommend for my case or how do I figure out what works best without buying a million different adapters? • @SovietLensReviews

Hey, I would say then, maybe try buying a PK to Fuji X adapter and just hoping it works. As long as the adapter that this lens first goes on doesn't have a metal ring like a normal M42-??? Adapter, then you're good. It's not easy to tell though.
