Sharing the results of my guitar journey towards fast wrist picking and more. I'm inspired mainly by Paul Gilbert and Zakk Wylde, although I got into electric guitar thanks to Yngwie Malmsteen, Buckethead and some Steve Vai.

    4:40 well, you totally glossed over Guthrie Govan. He can actually play AND his explanations are known throughout the guitar community as nothing less than amazing. He British and his grasp of the English language and his understanding of how to play various techniques is up there. But the difference mostly, I believe, is Anton isn't gigging and isn't writing songs so.... he spends his time.... teaching. Anton is one of the best pickers there is. But I disagree with your assessment that Paul Gilbert can't teach and there are MANY great players who DO know how to teach. Ever hear of Frank Gambale?

  • @TruthSurge
    @TruthSurge2 ай бұрын

    ? You are saying Paul Gilbert doesn't know how to teach. Wow. He has so many YT vids explaining his picking methods and waaaaay back in the 80s he had those VHS videos where he broke down his methods/ideas slowly so you could try and understand. Maybe you learned easier from a fellow Russian?

    Thank you Magnus! Although I'd be happy for it to become a real product, It was mostly a proof of concept project. Since I have a simple FDM printer - the grills are not as sturdy as I'd like them to be, so I'm not comfortable with selling it as a good quality and reliable product. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't survive the shipping. Hopefully I'll come back to it one day and figure out how to mass produce such ventures, I believe there should be a way and I hope someone will figure it out before me :)

    This is without question the best demonstration of Zakk's technique. In the beginning, it is awkward to pick this way, when your use to being a upstroke picker. But he cracked the code on this, as it is just a matter of time with the metronome and repetitions to get up to speed and clear.

  • @DimaPavlenko
    @DimaPavlenko4 ай бұрын

    @@Cognitoman I got better in my opinion, but did several changes, in fact based on Paul's early "reverse picking grip". One of the changes is instead of pressing with the side of the thumb I just move it higher towards the knuckle, which simplified the grip, prevented fatigue/pain and prevented my bad habit of "clinging" the thumb to the strings. But this is just one of several modifications I made, compared to Anton's teaching flow, hopefully I'll find the time and energy to shoot an updated video.

    Some good stuff here but a lot of bullshit too. Plus I don’t like the whole cult thing of playing on a string until he approves before learning string crossing. That plus hiding technique is sketchy. Reminds me of the old Gracie jiu-jitsu days where they held back on what they showed their paying students. I have no problem with my students sharing what I teach them.

  • @DimaPavlenko
    @DimaPavlenko6 ай бұрын

    Most students there began from single string exercise as that's Anton's recommendation, that's how he structured his lessons. I don't recall Anton declining any question or video submission if someone chose a different own path. All of the lessons were readily available, so it could be that I represented the somewhat "Soviet" strict approach of following instructions. The string transitions are one of the marketing and selling points of Anton's school, which was smart in my opinion, yet I didn't feel he was withholding anything from his paying students. If it was an in-depth video with my own take on his technique I'd gladly explain it, as long as it really adds significant value on top of it.

  • @jambertin54

    Anton loves Paul Gilbert. That's how he developed his technique. To be able to play Gilbert's stuff. Anton focused on the mechanics behind the picking. Who could blame him? Paul Gilbert was all about shredding fast and being super precise. He's a great player to draw influence from. Also, I believe Anton took that picking info from Michael Angelo Batio "speed kills" DVD. You have to play slow the same way you play fast. That's the MAB way

    Are you still studying from Anton's school? Any progress? So far I haven't seen a student of Anton's actually achieve anything close to his level. Curious if his school works or he is just one of those one in a million guitar players.

  • @DimaPavlenko
    @DimaPavlenko6 ай бұрын

    Hey! Looks like you can start your own school lol amazing sweeps! I spent there a year only, once felt I've seen all variations of his answers on various topics I went on a journey to figure out my leftover problems. I'm in the progress of writing a script for a summary video with insights and progress, though due to my current workload and general chronic procrastination it will take me several months (at best lol). A lot of the insights came from the reverse pick grip + straight thumb short range picking that you seem to be utilizing as well, similar to Yngwie. I doubt there will be any student in the near future that would reach Anton in 100%. While he teaches his technique, he most likely put a lot more hours into it than humanely possible or his average 25-35 year old audience students can invest along everything else, so for that matter he is "just one in a million guitar players". You're right there almost aren't reviews, though I don't think I ever seen any proficient students in neither "wrist picking" oriented school, so I personally assume "success rate" is pretty low in all of them. The problem is there still aren't many alternatives to choose from. The only related "reviews" I can recall are: - Mikhail Popov - kzread.info/dash/bejne/m62kqMyjgpy-nbw.html though he was pretty proficient before the school from his words - Victor Sadovsky (Виктор Садовский) - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqSWuI9teNqvg84.html A guy has sort of a diary of his progress with Anton's technique, I don't think he's officially enrolled to the school. Most likely used pirated recordings from the school, since never references any other videos there are (like answers to other students by topic). Non of them go into extreme demonstrations/sweeps/string skipping, only the basic technique.

    @DimaPavlenko haha thanks. I can sweep but alternate picking at Anton's level is still just a dream for me. Looking forward to watching your next video when you can upload it. I agree though...I don't think any other players will reach Anton's level no matter how much they study his videos.

    You mentioned that you just want to be able to play things technically correct and you don't care about feel... Totally understand what you're saying. However, this is a massive part of what makes Paul Gilbert...Well, Paul Gilbert. He is the most passionate guitar player out there. To this day he is still excited by the most simple things, bending strings for example. Until you develop a true want for this, you will never truly be able to replicate PG!

    С техникой Зака к счастью не страдает. Игра от локтя (в отличии от запястья) на Лес Поле даже удобней в плане высоты струн и веса гитары - она стабилизирует сама себя даже если махать очень сильно. Осваивал её тоже на Лес Поле (тут видео 6 лет назад, примерно поняв основы : kzread.info/dash/bejne/e62Mw6-QpdbFaLA.html ). С ПШ запястьем было намного сложней и не советую Лес Пол на время обучения.

I've spent a lot of years playing 80's style shred like Lynch, Jake and DiMartini so trying to switch now to forearm picking just isnt working. Thanks for the incredible detailed explanation here, and using the wrist on some. I think I'll just learn to be comfortable . Thanks again, well done.
