Karen was a great singer, but she lacks the feeling and sense of youthful longing in the original. Shelley will openly admit she didn't consider herself a great singer, but she sure is great on Johnny Angel.

she's not singing live that's the 45 version or the recorded version. But she is obviously too thinand how she has that energy. I don't know why people weren't more firm with her but nobody knew at the time how to treat this and now she's dead sadly.

She was one of the best. When I think of those classic silky smooth voices, I instantly think of Doris Day and Karen Carpenter. Sometimes you’re just born with the gift. When you have it, you have it. Karen had it. She went well before her time, just tragic. But think of how much she gave to the world in her short time here.

In a way I wish it was someone else who died of anorexia. Because it was Karen Carpenter, a kind woman who sang nice songs with a sweet voice, and this connotation has stuck with anorexia to the present. That it's a tragedy that occurs to young women too pure for this world. You can see it on people's social media accounts, it's an image anorexics still gravitate toward. Maybe if it was someone else there wouldn't be this "allure", for lack of a better word. I can only speak as an outsider.

Richard Carpenter was a very sick man at this time and could not make the appearance. Notice the substitute at the piano keyboard. Richard was hooked on drugs and in rehab I believe. Karen told the TV host that Richard could not be there because he had the FLU. Go TONY PELUSO on lead guitar !

No. I much prefer Shelley's. It is what I have known since I was 7 years old in 1962. "And just to be clear" (as many politicians often say), I am very open minded to Karen's version. I listened to it a few times so I would get accustomed to it. Nope. Shelley gets my vote. Besides, the visual of Shelley singing it on The Donna Reed Show CANNOT be beat. One comment about Karen Carpenter: Yes, I agree with many people that her voice is great. However, sometimes, including with Johnny Angel, I am not so fond of her phrasing.

Unforgivable of Richard dragging her around to all these shows instead of committing her to some sort of rehab hospital.

  • @sureshmukhi2316

Why are you blaming Richard? Karen herself didn't believe she had a problem. If he "forced" her to get treatment, I bet you would say he was being a toxic macho big brother.
