CommonwealthVintageDancers
The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers reconstruct, teach and perform American ballroom dance of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We focus on the Federal, Civil War, Gilded Age, Ragtime and Roaring Twenties Eras. In addition to performing the dances of these periods, we host public balls, dance classes and multi-day workshops for a thriving community of historical dance enthusiasts.
We are located in the Boston area. See our website at www.vintagedancers.org or contact us at [email protected].

A great and moving dance and, as a chance to appreciate traditional costumes, beautiful icing on the video cake that is!
At first I was thinking “‘Gothic’…? But the dancers’ outfits are far too modern for the Gothic era!” (Either the medieval period or the late 18th-early 19th C era of Gothic romances.) Then the penny dropped: It’s the arches the gentlemen form! That’s a very pretty dance, and must have been popular due to its simplicity.
What is the name of the music used for this dance?
How did "Swing four half round and back" turn into moulinets?
I was looking for references of how crinoline affects dancing and this was far and away the most useful one! Thank you so so much for the upload <3
What is thos music and by whowm please foe the quasuddo
Beautiful ❤
I was looking at a site about this and weasel can be a reference to a suit and pop could mean to pawn something... trading in the suit could fit with the dance really although some people think it's about spending all your money on dessert and drinking alcohol and then having to pawn your suit. tuppenny rice and treacle are ingredients for rice pudding idk hopefully it is an "eat drink and be merry" thing without all the pawning the suit stuff
Where did you get the dresses?
What the hell is this?
came for the swoosh ad was not disappointed
I recognized the second tune from the 1985 miniseries, "North and South".
Is this before or after the masked orgy??
That was fun - thank you! Love the costumes too... :-)
Comedy
Does anyone know what this song is called?
would love to take classes
Apparently it was all the rage in mid 19th century.
I can't get 10 people to show up for my birthday party with free beer and ribs... They found enough people to do a period costume dance to a childrens rhyme.
could be a recommendation for having obscure interests... people with weird interests can be counted on to show up
Thanks so much for recording and sharing this! I just learned how Pop Goes the Weasel took the country by storm - and that there was a dance to it! I was wondering what that dance could possibly look like, and then your video took care of that question :)
Same here.
Can you tell me please what is the first tune called? Thanks
How long did it take to learn all of these dances?
One step is a ballroom dance popular in social dancing at the beginning of the 20th century. Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances with one man and woman, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world.
I love these
oh wow
silly...dull like the folks dancing them
Aww... poor thing.
I have no idea what is going on but I’ll be there
What's the first song? It's so cute!
Could you please tell me what's the music of the first dance? Many thanks!
i remember caricatures about hoopskirts and the women`s ignorance of the "naughty sights" they offered while women moved around their daily lives. I also always wondered why it was so popular for men to sit at the edges of the rooms and watch the dancefloor. I had a somewhat hard time to imagine the whole thing, never having worn a hoopskirt myself, but with the way you can literally see the lace edges of these ladies`s bloomers during some of the more active dances, it all becomes too clear. ;)
@1:50 Chopin sits in the corner....
cwvd, still exist...2020?
The deep blue gown is especially effervescent!
I do not think that word means what you think it does.
Love the video! What are the names of the individual dances?
in these times of corona virus, O am crying for the past.
So, you long for the time of the deadliest war in U.S. history? Adjusted to current population, the death toll could be as high as 10 million people.
No.. BUt with this virus about, i really miss dancing cheek to cheek
How do you find dances like this and are they open to anyone?
this is so nice, im obsessed with 19th century dancing and love stories
superbe !
Gorgeous outfits and demonstration! Watching this, I can really imagine how much fun this would have been at a country dance when it first came out.
I came here to see what the 1860 Japanese embassy found funny.
Oh? I'm intrigued. I know you said this 4 years ago, but I'm very interested.

Without regard for political affiliations, the next time we have a “lame duck”, I want this example of dance and music played as background for political ads. Great vid.👍
