Under Par Acres is our family story about leaving everything behind to build 70 acres of raw land into a "dream golf homestead". We have completed construction and moved into our new farmhouse, and we are in the process of building out our backyard golf practice facilities. We built a DIY putting green, multiple tee boxes, a backyard golf bunker, and we are turning our 10 acre hay field into our very own driving range! We are videoing all of the projects we build, and also sharing #shorts of all the day to day work and fun we are having on our dream golf homestead!

When my local course switched over to Bermuda grass they kept the fairways in almost a swamp like condition for weeks.
That's what I've heard, Bermuda seed requires a ton of water to grow. With the extreme heat, I was pretty much doomed...
Tiff tuff sod and sprig it
I've thought about this and am going to look into it further for next year. For now, just going to mow it low and wait to get the Rye grass growing nicely this fall.
Maybe pre-germinating would have given you better results
Yeah, I definitely took a lot of short cuts on this project and it showed. Should have never thought that I could hand water this with extreme heats moving in, I think I was doomed before I started...
You family wants to put a putting green in our yard and they are worried it’s going to be hard to install. My dad does lots of concrete work so he has most of the equipment was it very hard for you to install and is their a company we should try to get it from.
My family dang autocorrect
It really wasn't that hard, other than having to move all the crushed gravel by hand. The biggest key is getting extremely detail oriented and not taking any short cuts. If you can get the materials directly to the build spot, you could probably build a small green in a long weekend. There's tons of professional companies you can go with, but it will cost 4 to 5 times more than DIY. If you are able to focus on the minute details and enjoy the work, I believe it's well worth it, but if not, I would definitely say to hire a professional who specializes in putting greens, and avoid local contractors who have no experience as I have heard and seen many horror stories of the final product.
Is there anything you would change about how you made this? Planning to use your how-to video as a guide to make my own, curious if after a few years you wish you’d have done something differently
One of the minor things I would change is I would have gone with 6 inch cups instead of 4 inch, and used a higher quality cup. I'm already seeing some cracking in a few of the cups I bought for cheap. If I had more budget room, I would have built a bigger green, used an underneath padding, and went with a higher quality tur with heavier face weight and longer fibers that require more infill. That would allow for better holding on longer shots. Good luck and let me know if you ever have any questions. Thanks!
Yes
Love ur vids😊
Thanks!
Way to go Wilson! Always gotta challenge yourself to keep growing and getting better. 🎉
Absolutely!
I'm a suburban dad, but you inspire me to move the family to the reservation and get my boys set up with a great practice facility.
I've lived in the city the majority of my life and this whole thing started as nothing more than a day dream about 7 years ago...
W swing
Hard work pays off and with a good mentality youll go far 💪
That's what I keep telling him, focus on the long haul, not the short run. If he develops a great short game and has a great attitude, the results will start to pour in as he grows.
My wife gave me the green light to make one of these! Love the video, very instructional. Anything you wish you would have done differently? Also, could you hit long shots into and it receive them halfway decently or would you have needed to add something below the turf? Either way this is awesome and my new guide for my own!
First piece of advise, start digging and building while you have the green light...🤣🤣 Seriously though, one of the minor things I would change is I would have gone with 6 inch cups instead of 4 inch, and used a higher quality cup. I'm already seeing some cracking in a few of the cups I bought for cheap. I can hit short chips, but from outside 20 yards it's nearly impossible to stop a ball on. If I had more budget room, I would have built a bigger green, used an underneath padding, and went with a higher quality tur with heavier face weight and longer fibers that require more infill. That would allow for better holding on longer shots. Good luck and reach out if you need any advice during the build! Thanks!
Good stuff Wilson
GO GET EM WILSON!!
😊
That's awesome good luck Wilson!
Bruh! Regulations state that putting greens are only supposed to be made of a 64/40 blend of grass stains and elephant grass and that astro grass stuff. Must also have at least one hill that is a ten foot regulation hill. The hole needs to be a three way split shot put that goes over the river. Don't forget to troll for more negative comments because that electrically charges your electric putter club thingy. Enjoy your new green! Oh, almost forgot, it's way too small.
Possibly the funniest comment I've ever received!!
Wait, so is it real grass or fake grass?
Nice but are you able to chip onto the green without it bouncing like it hit a cart path?
From inside about 20 yards I can hold chips, but outside 20 yards, it's like landing on concrete for sure! I would have had to gone much bigger and spent a lot more money if I wanted to hold longer shots.
I clicked thinking I was going to watch just a few seconds, and Sir, once I noticed you Really did all of this with just a few machinery, I stayed until the very end! After this, you can slap Mike Tyson, and you'll knock him out! LOL What a Very beautiful end result! You have a fan here!
Thanks a bunch! Glad to have you onboard!
What type of turf did y’all order for your putting surface? Wanting to do an artificial putting green that will give a consistent roll all year round.
Below is a link to what I used and I've been very happy with it! turffactorydirect.com/product/tfd-birdie-putt-elite/
Great idea. I'm gonna try this
Retired greenskeeper back again! Loved the video. Great work with the boys. A trick we used to use for the top soil is to dump a couple wheel barrel piles out around the area and then we dragged the leveling rake right over them with the mower. Had to make a bunch of passes but worked great. We even converted a couple hand leveling rake heads into mower attachments by drilling a couple holes and hooking it up with a chain. Can’t wait to see your Bermuda results!
Thanks! Yeah, next time, I'm definitely going to use the box blade to move it around, and build a drag to pull behind the zero turn. This turned out to be a ton of work and I was absolutely worn out when the weekend was done! Unfortunately, the weather that followed this was extreme heat and zero rain, so it has not taken. I tried watering a few times a day by hand, but with the heat the water would evaporate soon after. I'm going to just wait and go all in again in the spring on growing Rye and then will re evaluate for next summer.
Have you looked into a rock rake for your tractor? It should save a lot of time.
If I ever redo the yard again, I'll likely rent a rock picker and go all in. This was very helpful, but definitely left a lot of rocks. After the first rain, a lot of new rocks were uncovered. I've been told before though that no matter how many you clean up, more will just either grow or magically appear, and I'm now fully understanding the truth to that...🤣
tee boxes!!
this is sick
Awesome!!!👏
Thanks!!
You might want to screen that soil mix, way too much bark in the mix. It won’t help with smoothness later. Not being mean just trying to help.
Agreed! I likely won't use this mix anymore for the grass because it does have a high bark content. It's great for the garden though. From here out though, I should mainly just be top dressing with sand.
Please share info on your small tiller; looks like something I can use
It's just an Echo garden tiller. It works great on small tilling jobs! I primarily use it on my garden, but its good if I need to verticut a small part of the yard as well.
Good job.
the ending with you 3 hitting the ball together, man, thats a dads dream . awesome dude.
Thanks! Yeah, that's one of my favorite clips and has made some great pictures!
Absolutely love the content. Keep it up!
Appreciate it, and will do!
Gotta put a small par 4, could have 2nd tee box closer from a different angle and have a par 3 and 4
I've thought about building a three hole course with a par 4, 3, and then 5, but the maintenance required would be insane and I don't have the time or equipment to keep it up. That's the long term pipe dream though if this channel were to explode...
Y’all should do a what’s in the bag video soon! I would love that!
Yea
Love this! Son I do the same. Been wanting to put a little par 3 in recently!
even par?! what course did y’all play? that’s really good!
Stonebridge from the tips…I had it to two under but gave a few back coming in including a three putt bogey on 18. Are you playing on Monday?
@@UnderParAcres wow that’s very impressive! yes i will be playing in it!
@@RyderStewart77 We will see you Monday morning!!
I invested 15 minutes into the video only to find out he is using artificial turf. What a waste.
Love what you have done with your short game area. Do you know what variety of Bermuda seed you used? Was a hybrid bermuda not an option? Of course they come only in sod and sprigs. Look forward to seeing how it grows in. Great video.
I'll have to check and see what type of Burmuda it is. I didn't kill the native grass, just mowed it low. I figure the native grass will still grow and let us start chipping again faster, but the Bermuda should fill in all the bare spots and likely spread and take over. I'm going to start looking into weed control more seriously so that I can slowly transition this over to just Bermuda in the next year or two, and I'll do a Rye over seed every fall to make it look great every Masters week! Thanks for watching!
@@UnderParAcres That's Maya (Blackjack II) seed. I got the exact same 25 lb bag for my front and backyards.
I would love to be able to walk out my front yard to a nice par 3 in the morning haha
Man these kids are so lucky. I should’ve done this with my land instead of planting pines.
Go GETT'M dad. 👍🏽
YES A NEW EPISODE ON THE SERIES
How upset are you gunna be if you hit the drone?!
I've come very close multiple times for sure to hitting it with a golf shot! I actually just got it back from the shop though as I have had multiple "encounters" with trees...I probably won't hit any more golf balls at it at least for a little while...
STRONG showing Dad, but Wilson has earned a rematch, please post when you have a moment
where do u get all the balls
Anytime we play on a regular course, we collect every ball we find...
