I got CHILLS listening to this. I was attending a predominantly whytt boarding school in Sedona, AZ in 1968. I would turn 16 in 25 days. The day MLK was assassinated I was w/a teacher and other students shopping in town. In a aisle across from where I shopped I heard a stock boy say “I’m glad they got that nigger!” I’ve never before dreaded the vulnerability of being Black. I hurried back to the van that had brought us into town . I was so shaken I felt a lump in my throat and tightness in my chest. I think that was the day I learned fear could cause me to lose my breath. I could feel my own urine burning inside me. Imagine rushing to safety only to being surrounded by the same people whose people wished death upon my people. And, yet, I couldn’t say anything to anyone. My eyes welled up w/tears I could not shed (frozen in fear)….I forced myself to learn a hatred I’d never been taught/grown up with…..
