I haven’t ridden that trail in forever!
It’s still a great one!
I rode that trail for 15 years....thank you for making this and allowing me to relive some of my best memories Tim.
It's one of the good ones. Bits and pieces have changed, but all the features you remember are still there!
Makin me miss socal. Thank you!
Just doin' my job! Rock-it was one of the first trails I rode when I moved to SoCal... still a classic.
Why so much calculation and preparation while the shoes have only 2 rows of holes?
Personally, I like my shoes aligned with my cranks. Others prefer a slightly "toes out" approach as it feels natural. In both cases, the float in your pedals will help with any minor alignment changes that happen as you ride. As a baby, I had a bar between my feet to correct my foot alignment and point my toes straight, and I just prefer them to be pointing forward on the bike. It also helps to keep my heels from hitting the chain stays as I pedal.
Look up the guy that died on cactus from a mountain lion. It’s a good long time ago.
Yes. Mark Reynolds. I think about that every time we ride in Whiting.
Pretty cool! Where?
this was seen on a trail in SoCal called "Backdraft". apparently it's a good trail for foxy snacks.
Nice video! Love the initial vlog style and then the multi-shot POV. I've never liked single camera POV MTB riding.
Thanks! trying to find that balance between informative trail info, and some infotainment too@
Why would you want to align the shoes and cleats parallel when your toes usually point outwards while walking? You have to angle in the cleats accordingly to avoid your knees becoming twisted towards the inside while pedaling. That's what that tool is made for. Put the shoes on your feet, then step onto the tool with the cleats loosly fastened, position your feet in your natural standing/walking position, step out of the shoe, so the shoes stay in postiion, tighten the bolts on the cleats, and you're good.
30 years of riding, I like mine straight. No knee problems (knock on wood)! Certainly that tool lets you line up you shoes to your liking.
Great music!!
Did you find crossfire? We built like five bridges on that one.
I saw it on Trailforks but didn’t hit that one. Might need to meet up and get the mesa crew tour!
Ya bro come ride with us…the mesa crew
Nice edit, man! Love the font used on the trail name.
Thanks! Lots more to come!
I prefer a Santiago Oaks XC ride. Less hikers and more fun DH
Will be covering more trails at ‘Oaks soon.
@@RideOC my XC loop is Start Lot C Santiago Creek Trail to the dam Up Bobcat to Sage to Oak Trail Down Yucca, up Coachwhip Down Deer, up Anaheim Hills Down Bahram Ridge to Cactus Up Bumblebee and Mountain Goat Down Chutes Ridge On cooler days, I'll add Weir Canyon loop
@@cliffsangelsphotography great loop! might have to do that one soon
Dude it’s not 2005. WT pros and knowledgeable riders haven’t been running cleats that far forward for decades. Calf activation is a waste of energy and will just make you fatigue. If you want to get faster try this, slam you cleats all the way back and lower your seat accordingly to maintain a 20 degree bend in the knee.
Tubolito are great, but a set of RideNow costs half the price.
I’ll Have to check those out
Tubo’s are great!
A great trail to practice turning!
Thanks! It’s a ton of work for sure!
Great footage - I know what it takes to get the various camera angles/drone footage! I need to get back out to Oaks......I live right near Whiting/Luge
Been riding Whiting since before it was considered a "Park", back in the early 90s. "Cactus Run" as it was called back then had a considerable amount of cacti along its path. Over the years and as the trail has been rerouted, the cacti along its sides has been removed for safety reasons. I love seeing the ever changing trail each time I ride there.
Would have liked to have seen/ridden that - we started riding here in 2004.
Perfect mix of flow and chunk.
it's one of Laguna's best dh singletrack trails
sick video combos
Thanks very much! Lots more to come soon too!
I love your content!! New subscriber here
Cleeeeeeeet
Ehh? Fastest way is up Westridge...then you're there. Nice video tho 👍🏻
That’s the way up through the neighborhood, right?
@@RideOC yes, but your way is much more of a workout
NEW SUBSCRIBER !!! Fantastic video & edit !!! Awesome riding as well bro !!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Lots more coming - thanks very much for following
awesome edits Tim, keep em' coming, feels like I am back in So Cal !
Looks like a must-do trail next upon my next visit.
Definitely add it to your list. Proper chunder.
Can't say I have climbed every foot of Stair Steps, but back in the day, 1995-2000, it was something we did climb on the regular. And it was the first climb and soul crusher on the Rads Challenge annual throw down. DT
So cool - I’ve heard stories of that event.
Awesome tips! I usually pre-clean the inside of the caliper and the pistons with a childs toothbrush and alcohol. I didn't think about using a Qtip to apply fluid to the pistons, but lubing the pistons with appropriate brake fluid is the point. DT
Thank you sir. Q-Tips should be a vital addition to any toolbox. 🤣
Love some Whiting flow
I’ve always been curious. I know someone who crashed because of them. Not sure if it was because of a bad installation
hard to say. the assumption is that the grips move a ton and twist constantly. I like them set up in the most "softest" option meaning that they have the least amount of of resistance for the twisting motion, and they dont move easily at all. you really need to squeeze and twist to get them to move. but over a longer ride, I have no doubt that they're helping reduce hand fatigue and vibrations.
How are they suspension tho? All they do is rotate a bit which sounds totally sketch.
the suspension inserts keep lift the grip off of the bar and they do have a firm twist action. they are not loose and floppy, but the have a slight amount of "give" to them. the twisting action at the end of the video takes some force and squeezing to achieve - they don't move easily. they've worked for me!
Love REVGRIPS and stem too 🤘
all grips are for dampening. ill stick with raceface.
That’s true. Thanks for checking them out.
The grips will have play... Ok, f this I'm out. If I want less confidence I'll just make sure not to tighten the stem so it has a loose fit.
That’s not quite the same, but I get the hesitation. All I can say is that they work for me 🤷🏻♂️
Even check new hangers, they aren't all created perfectly.
A fine tip and one that always gets forgotten. Check those new hangers, too!
Looks like fun. Is there a Strava link to help me find the trail head?
it was great to get out into some new space! my guess is that the plan and goal (if I understand correctly) is to take load off of more highly used trails and put them into these unused zones. hopefully as that plan rolls out, we'll get monthly open access days. I think this was the first step in demonstrating the demand is there and that this plan is needed. Ride OC is not part of the team putting this plan together - that's just what I took from it. Stay tuned, there's more to come...
@@RideOC oh okay, so this was the soft open of a potential new trail system. Seems like a lot of work to invest and not have it accessible permanently
There's a couple of switchbacks that are off camber & are flow zappers.. they could use some berming up, but it somehow gets over looked every time when trail work gets down on this trail?? I am local and remember when this trail was much faster & funner before all the switchbacks were put in.
good question... Vista gets brushed back from time to time, but some of those corners could use some work!
Looks like a fantastic place to ride. I’ll look forward to trying it out.
And you should
Such a great day with the OC MTB community!
Yes it was!
Great memories of a fun morning!
Looking forward to the next one!
Nice! So, who crashed?
me... I crashed. lol.
Need to get one of these tools
Super helpful and easy. Thanks for this
Great info that everyone can use.
Great xc trails and slabs at the 50 yr zone
Whiting ranch is so 🤌
Such flow 🎉
My bikes are custom made for me by the manufacturer. I live in Northern California. Spesh is a NorCal company.😊
Custom Specialized- very nice!
@@RideOC if you whine and complain to the right people long enough, you might eventually get what you want, could be the moral of the story, lol.
@@RideOC this bike was made for you and me.
