    I find that markers and pens don't always write well on felt but you could try that with a sharpie. There are no hard and fast rules - just experiment and see what works for you!

    I need tl make a caterpillar shape with ridges along it for xmas ...its a bossety worm im trying to make cos the one on sale is a fake...and im not sure how to do the initial shape...im thinking use prefelt and string to tie the crinkles in the worm...like tie down so thay each bit blobs out and has a line acirss it if that makes sense.

    Hmm, I would probably go with all core wool myself. You could make the puffy bump parts first and then connect them all with a layer of core wool over top. Similarly, you could take these eggs and connect them together with a layer of core wool.

    Would it not be more time efficient to wet felt the ball then needle felt on a design? This method seems incredibly laborious especially if you want to make enough to go on a Christmas tree!!

  • @FeltedSky
    @FeltedSky9 ай бұрын

    I do not generally find wet felting to be a speedy process, but it is possible that it would be a little faster than needle felting the ball, and most especially if you wet felted your balls in the washing machine/dryer instead of by hand. Then it would definitely be faster. We do sell ornament balls now that are wet felted and this kit is getting redesigned in the next few weeks so that it has 4 of our pre-made balls instead of starting from scratch. Some people do want to know how to needle felt a ball and hone their sculpting skills this way. But most of us don't have the time for it, that is true!

    @@gaiaspirit5313 Have we already corresponded over email? The KZread videos show my old versions of the kits. The new versions are the only ones available now (since 2019). You can modify the new kits to make rectangular pictures by finding your own frame first, and cutting the linen backing to fit that frame before you begin. A few colors are different in the new kits vs. old kits. I left up these older tutorials because people still find them useful.

    What are the differences between the needles? This video was so relaxing and your skills are excellent!

  • @FeltedSky
    @FeltedSky Жыл бұрын

    There are different types and gauges (sizes) of needles. The barb (notch) placement can be different on the bottom of the needle or the shape at the bottom can be different (triangle - 3 sided vs. star - 4 sided). In this video, you want to start sculpting with the lower gauge (bigger) 36 triangle needle because you can get the shape finished faster. Then go to a higher gauge needle for the branches because you will get a smoother surface finish. Probably any size 38 or 40 would be fine for making the branches.

    I appreciate the tutorial and the time you tool to explain everything but oh my the left over visible poke holes are driving me nuts! 😬

  • @FeltedSky
    @FeltedSky2 жыл бұрын

    Do you already have the picture up off the mat? I find that my holes aren't as noticeable by the very end when the picture has been pulled up. (also, look at it from farther away, not close up!) There will always be some puncture holes showing but you can work on your technique to make them less noticeable. Very noticeable holes could also be a function of the needle you are using, or the combo of needle, type of wool and backing material. To have a smoother looking surface, the depth of your pokes and how close together your pokes are can also play a part. Very close together pokes at an even depth seems to help. I think this is only developed over time as you gain more practice and skill.

    Could one make the pre-felt with roving or other top coat wool they have? I suppose it is more time consuming but does it make a difference?

  • @FeltedSky
    @FeltedSky2 жыл бұрын

    Hi - yes, you could make your own prefelt. It is easiest with uniform batts but roving can also work it just takes longer to lay it out. You would want multiple layers to get a good thickness and it is best to crisscross the fibers - having the direction of the fibers in one layer at right angle to the next layer. That creates stronger prfelt/felt.

I do sell digital patterns of my current kits but I do not have the newer version of these trees up yet. I will try to get to that early in the new year.
