The Jackaroo 4WD & Camping Channel
The channel is for owners of the Isuzu Trooper and its many variants. However, we cover a lot of other 4WD topics around camping, fitting out your vehicle and other technical subjects.
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between 1981 and 2002. In the Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally as a Trooper but it also received several other names. These include the Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SSangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
This channel is not monetised and it is entirely funded by Patreon and Buy Me a Coffee subscribers and me. I now have some merchandise available for Patreons and BMaC (coming soon). The Patreon page raises funds to make content, please support me if you can by clicking the banners.

Is there anyone in Queensland that fully understands these Engines.
big job mate
With you on that Dave, motivation is tough to find when the temperature drops.
Should move to queensland Dave!
A bit cold for me mate....lol Seriously I would move up there tomorrow, sick of this cold weather
plate the exhaust for egr when assembling
Hi mate, I could do but I haven't really had any issues with the EGR or with sooting up etc. I'll have a think about that one. Thanks mate
Nice find Dave.
Hello, the problem is that it does not start and I put spray through the intake, it starts failing and more than 2000 rpm, otherwise the engine stops, what should I do? ...thank you
You will need to identify what the issue is being caused by. Have you made any changes lately such as an engine service?
There was a bit of caked sludge in the ports. Was that predominantly in the intake ports possibly a result of oil through the EGR?
I ran the engine without a catch can for about 18 months. I am not convinced that it was as bad as it looks in the video. However, it needed a good clean out.
Thanks for having the proverbials to expose them.
Sorry Ben but I was supposed to email you before I launched the video, I forgot
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel You don't need to worry about that. Things change with time and show their true colours.
good stuff mate lots of those that do this and hard to get money back and cost you post to send it back
Thanks for your support. Luckily, eBay has given me a free return label and will repay me. They will also recover their loses from the seller.

Look for SX7660 Idler Arm
Thanks for the tip. Will do
Hi Dave … not directly connected to this chapter, I have a 4 Jx1 here in the UK.. I am looking for a replacement Aircon condenser. Not able to locate one anywhere. Do you have any advice please..
Have you thought about asking to see if anyone has one on the FB groups and asking them to post it to the UK?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel No Dave, I hadn’t thought of that…thank you, I’ll take a look. Get well soon 💪
I'll be getting pneumonia at this rate" - be careful Dave. Glad you stopped when you did. Looking forward to seeing that head off. Its a peak inside a 4JX1 that is non existent in youtube land!
Thanks for your concern Ben, I am a lot better now, got my taste and smell back. Well on the mend, which is just as well because my idler and relay arm are coming today. I am 99% certain that the issue is a head gasket so I am also looking forward to removing the head. I will film this too.

@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel I just filled the Jack from near empty and it took 71.3L. When I looked up the specs, they say it has a capacity of 85L - any ideas whats going on with this discrepancy? I'd believe 75L, but not 85L

Bummer! Can you still get OEM radiators for the Jackaroo?
Never tried, imagine they are expensive.
I only buy those solid 100% Alloy Radiators off eBay for about $200, as they never leak.
Unfortunately, my last radiator was an all alloy one from eBay and I bought this as an upmarket brand from Sparesbox, both leaked. The eBay guy wouldn't entertain a new one so, hopefully, the difference is that Sparesbox will.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Gee thats very unlucky. I've bought more than 20 of those Alloy Radiators and never had obe leak
As I thought, it does not contain lubricant, it will keep the bearing seal moist so, yes it helps there but it is not lubricant.
nothing on the modern car is easy now mate not like the old 70s models, ive tried many times trying to start or undo a nut and another mechanic comes along and gets it started straight away ha ha it all depends on what side of the mouth you hold your tong i always say and dont blame you for not going out in the rain mate good luck with it he should of got a jackaroo

So 5w30 or 5w40 in the 4jx1 is my question.
You have to be joking?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel No joking, every 5k I use ANY 5lt on special 10or15w40 in winter and 20or25w50or60 in summer Had car since new Oct 2000, oil comes out clean, starts easily and always good oil pressure even when idling hot in summer, NO JOKING :)
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel For my next oil change I will be using 5w40 as that is what I have, I was admonished quite severely on a certain 4jx1 f/book page just for asking if I could use 10w40 that the parts supplier gave me. I was new to the 4jx1 community and didn't need to be talked to like that.
In Adelaide winter I use any on special 5 ltr 10 or 15w/40 and change every 5000, both filters every 10,000. In summer, any on special 5 ltr 20w50 or 25w60 and change every 5000 both filters every 10,000. 5 litres only comes up to ADD mark on stick. Have had my 4JX1 since new 2000 now 380kms.
Why do you think you know better than Isuzu themselves?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Original owner since new Oct 2000. Isuzu says do valve clearance every 40k that was 340k/22 years ago. Engine STILL cranks evenly, good compression, good power, good economy 11L/100. Isuzu say change secondary eng filter every 20k and main 10k, I do both every 10k. Isuzu say change oil every 10k/6 months, I do mine every 5k/3 months. 5 litres of ON SPECIAL oil V 7 lt expensive oil every 10, I'll stick with 5 k change :) No eng warning lights, good oil pressure, easy starts cold or hot - even with glow plugs disconnected since new. Isuzu say change coolant 50/50 every 40k ? and use pressure cap, I use pure 100% concentrated coolant change every 5-7 years and vented unpressurized cap since new - all ORIGINAL hoses & original radiators with no leaks or loss of coolant. 40 degree stop/start traffic - temp STAYS at approx 1/3. REPAIRS since new besides regular maintenance :- Transmission rebuild approx 120k/2004 following long heavy open road tow in o/drive. Injector & sleeve seals - twice by myself Injector loom & rail pressure sensor - twice by myself. Throttle position sensor - twice by myself. RPCV strip & clean - twice by myself. Brake pads front & rear 3x by myself since new. New CHINESE turbo 370k by myself - approx $200 ebay plus 2 hours work :) SO FAR car is unmodified, original, reliable, one owner, daily driver & continuing. Must just be luck rather than judgement :)
Wow, that was quite a change. Congrats on the 500 subs, well deserved! Now, a question about oils. Is there a difference between oils marked for diesels and those without. Should I be getting a diesel specific oil for the 4JX1?
I would imagine that it is something to do with catalytic converters and the DPF but I'll look into it.
From what I can find, it appears that using Gasoline Engine Oil has the wrong additives for the increased friction and cleaning (detergent) requirements of a diesel engine. It appears that you can use diesel oil in a petrol engine but not the other way around.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Thanks Dave.
great content man good job
5 likes is better than 1, 2, 3, or 4 but it still isn't that many. I have been convinced to try one more Jackaroo Video so I will do that, see description for details.
Please could you do a 4JX1 video on the wiring loom from the injectors back to the infamous connector that collects oil from the rocker cover . Covering the resistance in Ohms on each of the wires and the continuity. Perhaps making up a bespoke loom soldering up the ends of the wires to stop the capillary action ??
Only thing Elon is possible of is spreading lies and trying to look rich while blowing away someone else's money. Yes i am salty.
The EV's we have are only First Viable Commercial Products. If these companies were not arm twisted by law makers most would have stayed ICE a lot longer. Now look at the mess there all in.
You don't want a four by electric. Hell no. Too heavy. But, they less likely to slip, can place torque on demand axle to rubber. Gas cars get stuck cause the tires can't go that slow. There's no range you can carry hundreds miles fuel. Ok now... You do WANT to build a...off roadish, van!! Converted. With electric. Maybe hybrid too. Solar panels. Well i don't off road. But. With solar, hybrid, you could go FOREVER. food permitting. As long as you can charge fast enough. Anyways I'm not gonna lie. Imagine having so much extra cash this is the type of crap you worry about. I'm trying to SURVIVE. NOT DESTROY NATURE FOR FUN BOOMER.
Don't forget the technology is very new, new battery and motor tech is coming up all the time. Internal combustion WILL be phased out, like it or not, and the future is amazing!
Then say goodbye to 4WD adventures, please tell us all about this new battery tech that is 'happening all the time'? Because since Lithium batteries which have been around since their invention in the 1970s, I haven't seen anything apart from an increase in Cell sizes. If 54 years is what we are calling new technology, then goodness help us. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7215417/ The first lithium battery was developed in the 1970s by a team of scientists led by Michael Stanley Whittingham at Exxon. They created a rechargeable lithium battery that used a lithium metal anode and a titanium disulphide cathode. This battery was the first to use lithium ions to facilitate the flow of electrical charge, which is the fundamental principle behind modern lithium-ion batteries. However, this early battery had some limitations, including the use of lithium metal, which is highly reactive and prone to explosions. Additionally, the battery was not commercially viable due to its high-cost and limited energy density. The development of the first commercially viable lithium-ion battery is credited to Akira Yoshino, a Japanese chemist who worked at Asahi Kasei. In 1985, Yoshino created a battery that used a carbonaceous anode instead of lithium metal, which greatly improved the safety and stability of the battery. This design was later commercialised by Sony in 1991. I did see a video regarding solid-state batteries (Sodium) and that was posted 7 months ago. I don't see any solid-state batteries at this time, so, where are they?
Spot on!!! Great research Dave. Keep it coming! You present info so clearly mate. Thank you!!
Good thing with the recovery gear and winch. You painted a pretty good picture without the video Dave! Could have called me, except my "4wd on demand" is flashing the "Check" light and can't get to 4ws and I was away in SA :)
Thanks, Ben, it's good to know help is always available. With the on demand does it have shift on the fly still?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Not sure Dave. I cannot get 4WD when I push the button. Haven't tried moving the transfer case into low either (I don't think I can as I expect it is locked out when not in 4WD)
You did the best thing with those young kids. Hopefully they rethink their behaviour after the police arrested them. Please let us know which camera model you are now using (the second one).
Thanks, Ben, I just thought about the poor person who lost their car that day. Having had a car stolen in the UK, I didn't want it back but I got it back. Yes, the second one not because it is better but it had the cheaper hard-wire kit and I already had that one installed. That said, the third camera said it was 4K but I could only get it to 2K.
You'll have to give us the story with the dash cams...maybe some lessons there for all of us?

Hi , Sir i'm from the Philippines i have an issue w/ my trooper 4jx1, it could not build a high pressure from (HPOP) high pressure oil pump so the engine doesnt start. Sir i am asking a favor from you to help me with my problem. Thank You Very Much .
Hi, do you have access to a Tech 2? If you think the HPOP is faulty, then you'll need to change it. However, you need to use the correct oil in the engine or it won't work. In the Philippines, you must use 5W-30 Oil only. If you have any other oil in the engine, then drain it and put 5W-30 in there. Furthermore, I would check the RPCV function, this regulates the High-Pressure oil and if it is stuck, it can cause issues. Do not replace it with a Cheap Chinese RPCV, it will fail. The other component is the ORPS which sends the oil rail pressure to the ECU which in turn controls the pressure via the RPCV. RPCV is the Rail Pressure Control Valve. ORPS is Oil Rail Pressure Sensor. Moreover, check your high-pressure oil pipe for leaks and check that the Oil Rail isn't leaking at the ends. I hope this helps.
I was on the floor with the first upload's audio. I was thinking, hey this is a brilliant comedy! You moved to Berwick - I was worried you had moves miles away. Those bloody oil filters! A mate's got a merc - oil filter at the top, easily accessible.
Lol, I am now at the other end of Thomson's Road more or less, nearer to your house than before.
The small filter is for the injection circuit, the long one for the engine lubrication circuit. I find the small one easier done of you run the left hand front wheel up onto a block of wood or ramp about a foot high. Then work from underneath.
@@nigelmchugh5541Thanks, will give that a try.
@@BenMitro clean around the small filter before loosening it, brake cleaner and an airline. You do not want any dirt getting into that circuit. I prefer to change the oil and both filters, give it a short drive, then change the diesel filter. If you change everything at once, and it dosent start you have two potential problems to choose from......
good stuff mate
Sorry about the audio and video
That worked out well despite the recording. Two things, how much for the injector repair kit and tell us what the vehicle feels like now.
Oh, congrats on settling in to the new place.
Not quite an injector repair kit, I'm keen to get hold of one of those. We have several spare injectors; however, I've changed three in 5 years, so we will have to repair some soon. Although Rob hasn't had to change any yet. The vehicle feels a lot smoother, it wouldn't even get up the slight slope without low range. Now it's running well again.
Thanks, still unloading boxes but getting there.

I did respond to this, don't know why it isn't here. They have Secop compressors
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Thanks. There is one on sale from this Saturday the 16th but it looks totally different. It has a plastic shell and there is no mention of compressor type. Looks identical to the Kings 75l.
How long and wide is it?
I don't know sorry, I'll measure mine once I get the boxes out of my car.
I had to replace mine the part from a ford 7.3 powerstroke diesel fitted and ran fine no modifications needed, hard finding these from isuzu or aftermarket
They aren't that difficult to find but it is good information knowing that the Power stroke version works okay. You can buy these from any Caterpillar dealer for around $700, Holden can also get them but you'll pay a premium, around $900 and they'll likely buy them from Caterpillar anyway. You should be able to buy them from Ramin Auto Spares in Dubai, not sure of cost. As they are a Caterpillar part anyway, I sourced one at a truck dealer in Dandenong and they had one in stock.
