    nice find! I like all grand prix's from 69 to 77. 15 years ago i was visiting a friend in oklahoma and spotted a low milage 70 grand prix sj with a 455, had a for sale sign in the window. Bought it drove it back to WI and still have it today. New paint job last year.

    I am thinking that thermostat was stuck in the open position. That heater core removal is awesome!!! I have never removed one from under the hood. Everyone I ever did had to be removed from the passenger side interior. That said, I wonder still, how did it cool with all that rust? This car probably had more clogged arteries than I do!!

    A 351-400 modified would move that car just fine, the smog era 302 is all of like 135-40 horse and i agree it's not enough to move 4,000+ pounds around.

    Only in the 1979 model year. The 1977 and 78 were available with a 400. 351 M and 400 engines can be upgraded with aftermarket aluminum cylinder heads or the Australian 302/351 closed chamber cast iron heads if you can still find them. All had 2 barrel carbs from the factory . I have a 1979 that had a 351 M, I pulled it and installed an upgraded 429 from a 1971 Thunderbird and a C-6 transmission with a wide ratio gearset from an E4OD.

    Pull the motor, have the heads done with new valve seals. A better cam, and a different carburetor. That probably has a Motorcraft variable venturi 2 barrel. Those things were junk new. A Holly 2300 is a decent replacement. If you go much over 300 horsepower you're going to need to start thinking about that C4 trans.

  • @donreinke5863
    @donreinke58637 ай бұрын

    Those did not have the variable venturi carb, those would not appear until the early 80s, before Ford went to throttle body injection in 1983. Most of them ended up being removed and tossed. What they had was a Motorcraft model 2150 2 barrel, an upgraded version of the 2 barrel carb Ford had been using since the early 1960. .None came from the factory with a 4 barrel after 1976. 4 barrel manifolds are available from Edelbrock and other companies.

    @@donreinke5863 I had a 79 Grand Marquis with one from the factory. They were still pretty common when I was wrenching in the late 80s. The VV was a 2 barrel, btw.

    @@evolutionary-cul-de-sac That must have depended on the vehicle model or California emissions The 351 M equipped 79 Thunderbird I have came with a Motorcraft 2150, the tag number on the carb is correct for the vehicle I have an 82 Thunderbird here for a transmission rebuild, it has that god-awful 255 ci V-8 and it also has a 2150, which is carb tag correct. I used to see quite a few of those variable venturi carbs back in the day. When they screwed up we went to the wrecking yard and got a 2100 or 2150 to replace them with. We always selected the larger 1.21 or 1.23 venturi carbs rather than the 1.08s Holley also made a 500 cfm replacement 2 barrel carburetor with the Ford mounting flange, but they were more troublesome than the 2100/2150.

    Love this Gen T-bird. My 78 just had a huge tree branch fall and crush the trunk. She had a great running 351. Oh well, rear end is totaled now. Haven’t had the heart to get rid of it yet. Glad yours is shaping up to be a solid ride. You could have fun with a tricked out 351 in this. I wouldn’t go much larger than 400 v8. Keep some of your weight down. 460 is great, but space won’t make working on her as user friendly. And that 460 is heavy. But wouldn’t blame you if you did decide that route. Would definitely be fun

    The 1977-1979 Thunderbird is a personal luxury car, not a muscle car, though it can be turned into one. I would keep it as original as possible. If speed is what you want, get some ugly later model POS and build whatever you want out of it. The '77-'79 Thunderbird is one of my favorite 1970s cars. I was 18 when they came out. I like pretty much all of the '70s 2 door personal luxury cars with landau roofs and opera windows. Be aware that the Ford Duraspark ignition on these cars can be quite troublesome.

    1977 -1979 Fords did not have the 351 Cleveland which was discontinued after the 1974 model year. What they had was either a 351 Windsor or a 351 M, which was a tall block version of the Cleveland. The 351 M block was identical to the 400, but with a different crankshaft and pistons. The actual 351 Cleveland uses a small block transmission bellhousing while the 351 M and 400 use the 429/460 (385 series) bellhousing
