    I don't know if it is as noticeable when lighting a cigarette, but when I use it to light my pipe, I get a foul petrol taste during the first several puffs. I do carry it if I'm likely to be smoking outdoors, but that odor and the constant refilling prevent it from being my primary source of ignition. It's a shame because it is so reliable and iconic. I also have the relatively' new "soft yellow" butane pipe insert from Zippo, which solves the taste problem but has other drawbacks like having to keep the button pressed, limited capacity (or it's leaking - I'm not sure), and non-adjustable flame on the pipe version. It gives you the classic ping at least.

  • @Ludwig_Cox
    @Ludwig_Cox6 күн бұрын

    @@SaxoGrammatic Zippos are not meant to be used to light pipes and cigars. Pipes and cigars should only be lit with a butane lighter or matches for the exact reasons you just described. Zippo butane inserts are meant for cigarettes, you could argue you can also use them for cigars but the constant button pressing to properly toast a cigar is NOT practical at all. Buy a proper soft flame pipe lighter for pipes and a torch flame butane lighter for cigars. Cheers Ludwig

    @@Ludwig_Cox Both the fluid Zippo and butane Zippos I use are intended specifically for pipes. The chimney opening is on the side to accommodate pipe lighting horizontally, and there's even a pipe emblem on the case. Lots of pipe smokers use both varieties, especially the classic with fluid. Some people apparently aren't sensitive to the petrol odor and some are. I'm in the latter group, but as I said, it's good for outdoor use despite the taste. That said, I plan to upgrade to an IM Corona or similar at some point. I've used matches but they're annoying if the moisture in the tobacco is less than ideal and you have to relight multiple times.

    I still have mine that I carried for over fifteen years until I quit smoking in 1987. It's a zodiac model that had the Cancer symbol, lol. I remember it got shot with a BB gun and the guts were stuck inside so I sent it in and they fixed it for free. What a great American product. But I must say watching you smoke almost made me sick, and you need to quit that nasty habit. I wish I'd never started. Note: One big drawback is over filling it and sticking it in your pants pocket and having it leak on your junk: Not pleasant.

    Zippo lighters have a pleasant scent of freedom and adventure. They smell of gasoline, of course, but very pleasant. Don't worry about it! There are also Zippo gas inserts, but in my opinion they are not "real Zippo".😉

    Don't waste time smelling unlit cigars. A fellow I met in Havana once told me that it's the equivalent of sitting in a stationary Ferrari making engine sounds with your mouth for all it will tell you about driving a Ferrari. Neither the car nor the cigar reveals a thing until you ignite.

    I collect Zippos over half a lifetime & will firmly state: They should be more accountable for the durability of their finishes & artworks. I really like durable, simple things, which is why I've been a fan of Zippo lighters since I was a child. I also have three, which would be enough for three lifetimes, I don't know how I will use them. :D However, it is not true that it is less harmful to the environment than a quality gas lighter. On the one hand, you throw away Zippo liquid cans, and on the other hand, this gasoline-based liquid is more harmful than burning gas.

  • @Ludwig_Cox
    @Ludwig_Cox6 күн бұрын

    I didn't say it was more environmental friendly then quality gas lighters. I said It is more environmental friendly then disposable gas lighters made out of plastic which it 100% is. Quality gas lighters also need butane that comes in butane bottles so it's exactly the same packaging as a can of zippo lighter fuel. To "make" butane gas you also need to drill in the earth so that comes with a multitude of problems for the environment. But I'm not an expert on this so I have no idea if burning zippo fuel is more environmental friendly then quality reusable gas lighters, but that's not what I said in the first place.

    I quit smoking about five years ago but I used to roll mine as well because of the huge price difference and the quality was so much better too. One thing I had started doing because of a friend showing me was purchasing some pipe tobacco that is fresh in the bins(not the prepackaged kind) and let it sit with the bag open for a day in order to dry out a bit since pipe tobacco is usually moist and doesn't burn well when rolled. Pipe tobacco is much more flavorful than other kinds so I liked mixing half and half when I rolled mine. The flavors to pick from varied from shop to shop and it was fun to visit different shops to see what they had to offer.

  • @Ludwig_Cox
    @Ludwig_Cox11 күн бұрын

    Yes i know in the US you can get those enormous bags filled with pipe tobacco for an insanely low price compared to cigarette tobacco because it's taxed less. Unfortunately we don't have that in Europe as far as I know but I'd also do that if I had the chance. Pipe tobacco in pouches is quite expensive here so it's not really an option although I have sometimes mixed flavoured pipe tobacco with shag because flavored cigarette tobacco is banned in the EU.

Definitely not, a small gust of wind will blow out that unprotected soft flame in a snap of a finger. No point in owning a St Dupont in a Smoking ban society. I don't want to be a prick but I think EDC-ing a zippo without smoking is a bit weird haha maybe if you get those butane torch flame inserts it makes sense.
