Our Midlife Van - Our Midlife Adventures
We retired in 2021 and began traveling in and out of our camper van. From Cruising, and international travel, to camping in the US, Mexico, and Canada, join us on Our Midlife Adventures.
We bought a Promaster Van in February 2019 while Robin was going through chemo for her second breast cancer. We slowly built out the van and completed the build for $7k.
We are Rich and Robin a California couple that met in high school and married 7 years later. We grew up in Northern California moved to Southern California and raised our 3 children. After being married 35 years we recently retired and started traveling in our van and abroad. We love sharing our travels to encourage others to get outside and explore the world and new experiences. We love outdoor adventure & travel! From hiking in the mountains, scuba diving, snorkeling, and camping beachside along the Pacific Coast and throughout the Baja Peninsula.

Going into Mexicali are there Sentri lanes? I’m stoked for my 1st winter in Baja. I love the videos and I can’t wait to go off road in my Revel. Thanks for the info Dave
Thanks for watching! Going into Mexico no. But coming back we always take the Sentri lane in Mexicali to Calexico. Most the time about 10 minutes. One time it was about a 20+ minute back up. You’ll have a great time especially in your Regal.
Great video, thanks. I'm about to go on holidays with this Van. Could you tell me how big is the storage room in the back? We're travelling only in 2 people and we're scared we're taking too many or big luggages with us. You would be a great help :)
We had 2 carry ons and 2 backpacks and there was still some room in the back. There is storage on the right, water and left, propane. So the middle is the storage area under the bed.
can you view what gowild flights are available before buying it? the gowild tab is always greyed out with me. I really would like to know if my use case is viable
Unfortunately no. Only Go Wild Pass holders can see availability. What flight are you looking for?
@@OurMidlifeVan thanks. Between Sacramento and Detroit. Or Sacramento and Chicago. As I was looking yesterday (Thursday) I was thinking a Friday night flight may be too popular for go wild pass. I called customer service about it no answer. And their chat service had me waiting for an hour no person came. Just a robot asking if I was still there every 15 minutes

Haven’t used one but I guess t depends on how heavy the anchor is.
It is pronounced 'Holyhead,' similar to 'Hollybush,' except you replace the word 'Bush' with 'head.'

Thanks. This video was from our cruise last July. The weather was perfect when we were there the 11th of July. When we visited before in October it was much cooler and we got a little rain. We have a couple of videos of what we did on those days.
How was the weather? I’m doing a Norwegian fjords tour in a couple weeks with a stop in Kiel. Wondering if I can wear shorts comfortably.

@@OurMidlifeVan my point was about 50% of the population of Belfast doesn't like the term British Isles and it's something that the Irish take offence over as it labels the Island or Ireland as British. Is it safe to say you had a positive experience with indie camper? I have read many bad reviews.
This was our first time renting with Indie Camper and have rented now a total of 3 times in Europe from 3 different locations. We have had positive experience every time. As always we test out all the systems before we leave and on the last can we rented the water was not working. Turned out the water pump needed to be replaced and they had in fixed in less than a half hour and we were on the road. We also have purchased the extra insurance every time just in case and thankfully have never needed the insurance.

Do not rent from indie camper! This is a scam company! They have rented us a car with engine issue, which we had to return 10 days earlier then anticipated as we could not drive it anymore and it was diagnosed with an engine issue by a mechanic partnered with indiecamper. Out of 7 days that we had car, we wasted 4 spending in mechanic shops trying to fix it as they requested us to do. They did not gave us any replacement and we were left in Europe with no van, no hotel reservations. Almost two months later still trying to get my money back.
What indie camper location did you rent from?
Rented in Bordeaux France and were supposed to return in Barcelona. But after struggling with the engine issue, we had to return it in Lisbon. Do not rent from them! The worst experience and ruined vacation
Sorry you had issues. We have rented in Europe 3 times without issues thankfully.
I guess you got lucky. If a car doesn’t have an issue that may be ok. And things happen, cars can get issues, but how they handle issues is awful. I can’t even get my money back, never mind the time we spent trying to resolve the issue - starting from going to about 8 different shop wasting our vacation time to the financial burden. We had to book hotels, airbnbs, train and bus tickets last minute which cost us a fortune.
Great video - thanks for providing the insight into Admiral's Club. Most of all, thank you for saving me $79. I was going to get a one-day pass but I think I can easily find a decent meal (and some good wine) for less.

Hoping to do my first trip to the UK late 2025. I have never really considered a cruise vs flying. Do you prefer going by cruise? For us, it will be a family of 4. I'm really interested in train travel around the UK. Just something we don't have much of in the US.
We really enjoyed cruising in Europe as we were able to visit 18 ports in 10 countries. This gives us a little taste of a lot of different places to see where we want to visit again in the future. We took our first cruise 8 years ago and went from Barcelona and we did 3 stops in Italy. We fell in love with Italy and have been back 3 times now. Two of those times we spent some time traveling around in a campervan. Hope you make it to the UK in 2025. Safe Travels.
@OurMidlifeVan my wife is literally on a plane to Italy right now. I stayed back with our youngest soon but hope to visit the UK next year. I never considered a cruise but I would take the cost of hotels away plus the transportation between counties. How many total days is the cruise?

Great video! I was on the Regal the year it set sail....2015 I think. Then I was on it again in Februay 2024.....going back for another cruise in December 2024. Love this ship!

Ya and unfortunately the 7 day cancelation rule won’t help us with the domestic Go Wild Flight tickets.

Sorry it didn’t work out for you. We flew 30 times in the pass. Has been great for us so far.
Indie Campers is a total ripoff. I rented a van from them in May 2024 and bought the Premium Protection plan for $199. I had a small accident which dented the top of van. A local repairman gave an estimate of $300. Turns out the premium plan only covers about 30% of the van. The top and bottom areas aren't covered. They charged my credit card over $3,800 for damages. Then they lied about letting me have the local repairman do the work. Do not rent from Indie Campers.
Sorry you had an issue. Yes the told us the insurance doesn’t cover the top and bottom. Most RV rentals don’t as they don’t want you going off road or under low parking garages extra.

Did you ask about upgrading the day of or before? Also did you book your flight though the airlines or Expedia?
We book directly through American Airlines and they emailed us a couple days before regarding the upgrade.
You never go into the water?

I bought two 1-day passes for the admiral's lounge for my wife and her best friend that was traveling with her. They were denied access at the lounge counter in Charlotte, N.C. due to the lounge "undergoing some construction" while others were being admitted to the lounge with no issues. Found out after researching further that 1-day passes have the lowest priority for lounge access and the policy is if the Admiral's lounge has any construction going on at all 1-day pass holders are automatically denied access. That is messed up because the 1-day passes expire after 1 year and are non-refundable.
That is horrible. I would want my money back if the pass was denied. Or dispute the charge with your credit card company.

I have to say I associate the steps in front of the cathedral with the video for Sandstorm by Darude - a popular track in the late 1990s early 2000s when I visited Helsinki for the first time.
