My name is Briana and I am a licenced cosmetologist, loctician and educator. I made this channel for my clients and it has turned into an educational spot to learn the method that I created for locking up and maintaining dreadlocks, dreads and locs on smoother hair textures that won't lock up simply by twisting the hair. My videos are casual, It's just me being me, playing with hair. Hopefully, you will learn something new and have fun trying different things, letting go of a need for perfection or control. Thanks for watching! You can also find me and my work on IG briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy @bhivesalon_va and @bholder_va

Gorgeous set! I love hearing everyone's stories, reasons and what their dreads mean to them. It's crazy how dreadlocks are such a deeply unique and personal thing for so many of us yet they are also a huge unifier! Every time I see another person with them it's like we have an instant connection. 💜
Love the love that have gone into these locs ❤ They look great too

Thank you. My psoriasis has actually prevented me from starting my locs, as I'm afraid it will be harder to manage and remove with locs. Hopefully my change in diet will correct this and my journey can start soon. Much love
@@deionsandals423 I have two clients that are confirmed psoriasis. They have to wash more often than my other clients, more like every one to two weeks. One of them uses medicated shampoo from the doctor and the other one just uses Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle. I have noticed that when they are drinking more often, the psoriasis gets worse. The one who uses the Trader Joe's shampoo also takes a supplement that he heard about from Joe Rogan and that seems to have helped immensely. Your diet will definitely affect as well. If you were eating inflammatory foods, that you are sensitive to, gluten, dairy, soy, etc. it will make it worse. But also just getting a variety of vegetables and fruits creates some more diverse gut biome. Good luck! ❤️
@@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy Thank you for that insight, it is greatly appreciated!

Interesting. So, I've commented a few times and asked questions. I just noticed i have a patch of sticky hair on the top back of my head. Quick reminder of my hair: 3 weeks no comb, caucasian , loose curl/wavy, grown for 6 years. I've been using dollylocks shampoo maybe thats whats causing this sticky patch on my hair? I was washing twice per week with it. Should i just go back to just water?
Hmmm I don't know much about their products other than I tell my own clients to never ever use the locking spray or pepper. The shampoo should be simple unless it's got an ingredient that helps hair lock up. That's pretty weird. I use Trader Joe's tea tree single and I've never once had any kind of issue with it so that's the only one I can truly support.
It could also be your skin not getting washed out of the tradition area mixing with the shampoo and creating a gum. That happens sometimes. You've watched my washing video?
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy yeah but my hair isn't dreaded yet it's still in the beginning stage. Maybe I'll just switch to shampoo once per week but still wet every 3rd day. I'll go to trader Joe's and look for it
@@kileNoe what are you replying to when you said "yeah but my hair isn't locked up yet"?
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy maybe me saying that wasn't necessary. I'm just going to focus on scrubbing that area better Thank you for your insights and taking the time to talk
Hope he's making some goooooood money to make that sacrifice.
I hope so too! ✨🙏✨

Cutting my dreads to accommodate coworkers who profile? Couldn't be me.
I guess he felt he had no other choice. I know that he spent some time thinking about it and I really told him that there had to be another way but this was his decision and I have to respect it. There is a time and place for everything. 🤷♀️
@@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy the time and place to be your authentic self is all the time my dear. You're right about respect he willingly made that decision and subconsciously understood the perception. That is why I try not to project my sentiments of what dreads mean on to other people. It is still a "protest". I say go ahead and dread me, dreadfully". Because if you do I know the type of person I'm dealing with. But not all of us are willing to become outcasts
That right there! I feel you. This is why I do hair and live the way I live. No one will ever tell me how I can and cannot look and I will never do that to anyone else. ✨🙏✨

Awe. I'm not sure what that means
Ugh, well that's crappy :( He looked amazing with his dreads but he still looks great with his mohawk! I'm thankful I work for a small company that really has no policies when it comes to appearance. It's crazy because maintained dreads look both neat AND professional although apparently not all see it that way.
It really Is discriminatory and just straight colonialism at its core. Thank you for your positivity.
That’s a shame,his dreads were awesome,not fair in this day n age,blessings ✌️🙏🏻❤️
Thank you. I agree! It's so sad
Sad :( He looked so good with them!
I know right? 😢 I'm sure he'll get them again someday.
Is that his real hair or no? The part you pulling out?
Absolutely. I would say that 99.9% of anything you'll see on my page is the clients real hair.
HB 1514/SB 50 is a law in VA and protects against any discrimination based on hairstyles especially protective hairstyles which locks could easily be classified as. This man probably has/had a case to bring his employer to court over discrimination due to the implications of being passed over or not considered for positions due to hairstyle. Sad reason to feel forced to take this step, especially knowing personally how hard that decision is to make and how attached people become to locks specifically. Heart goes out to this guy.
Thank you for sharing. I told him that I believed he had a case but he felt that he didn't have a good one or any other options. I feel very bad about it. I do know that you can relate. 😔. I need to dig up your footage somehow. It's on other peoples phones 😢
It's like a mangy dog that was not looked after, that hair is disgusting

That will be really cool! I hope you do 🤗
This is great, I'm going to share this with my clients if you don't mind?
yes please feel free to share anything that you feel can help them :)
So i hope you dont mind me asking so many questions but as a brand new natural former (6 years growing my hair, type 3a , waist length) when should i expect to have to seperate my hair? Its only been 4 days no comb and i can see some changes , obviously nothing crazy. Seperating and wetting hair frequency is what im most curious about.
I wish I was better equipped to answer this question. When it comes to free form, it is a broad range of preferences. Some people believe that no separation is best because what nature gives them is what they need. Others separate after locs start to form on their own. Some separate as soon as the individuals start to show. If it were me, that's how I would do free form. I would see how my hair wanted to divide. Then I would feel around at the root or in the mirror to make sure the layout made sense with my natural swirl and cowlick pattern. Then I would take each clump section and do the root rubbing technique (see video) to hold a solid base. I would separate them every night at bedtime (see video) and I would wash every week with clarifying or tea tree shampoo and only condition the very ends to make sure they stay healthy and lock up last.
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy yeah I would want to seperate them. Thank you for all the information!
I do doordash so i spend a lot of time outside 😎
You're lucky
Thank you so much for this family amazing
You are so welcome
Look filthy……wash 2-3times a month!!
Do you have any tips or product suggestions that would help with scalp psoriasis and locs please?
I do have clients that have psoriasis. One medicates for it, washes frequently, and keeps her locs short. Another controls his by washing less, avoiding alcohol, drinking green vitamins, and moisturizing his scalp after washing with Pravana Intensive Leave-In Spray. So, it's different for everyone. I always recommend going to the doctor.
@@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy thank you xx Last time I went to the doctors for it they gave me a medicated shampoo but it made my hair fall out in clumps 🙁 so I was thinking of trying more natural remedies to ease the flare ups
Oh no! Don't do that again! My client uses Trader Joe's tea tree tingle shampoo
Very well said!!! Great demonstration!❤❤❤
Thanks so much! 💗
Wow! This is inspiring! You did a beautiful job. Mine are nothing close to being as matted and i really just didn't think i had any options but to shave...i think my biggest issue is the uncertainty of knowing WHEN to let them go...
How do you feel about natural form dreads? Just letting your hair dread. I recently discovered soaring eagle thru all of my research before deciding to go natural. I was on the fence but i do feel like natural is my preference. I dont want to make my hair dread i want to let it dread
A little about my hair: I've been growing it for 6 years. It's very long dry almost down to my waist. It's curly and course I'm a white male. Maybe around a 3a type. I've been wanting some sort of style and I've always been a fan of dreads. However i never knew it was a natural formation when you don't brush or comb. Now I'm dedicated to see how my hair forms without combing. I used to come everyday. So that's my story if anything goes horribly wrong I'll take a drive up to you to get it sorted out. I'm not too far just a couple hours haha
I love it. Natural is always preferred.
Haha that sounds like an awesome plan.
@@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy yep I'm In raleigh NC!
@@kileNoe Do it! There are a bunch of videos on youtube of others who have freeformed and I always find their dreads to have the most personality and the coolest look. Mine were formed by crochet - I have very thick long hair and now, after the fact, I wish I had known a little more about freeform because I def would have tried it! Good luck on your journey my friend!
I want to keep my 5yr dreads SO badly, but with no maintenance in 8mo plus depression and 2 long hospital stays my beautiful locs are suffering...i have no choice but to shave my head and its causing me panic attacks just thinking of losing them...I can't find ANYONE to help me fix them
I'm so sorry to hear that. It could be that it's time to let the energy of this set go so you can step into a new phase of your life. Orrr... you can travel and let someone put them back together for you. Getting a good at home routine would help a lot after that but I understand it's hard when you're going through stuff. Self care really is where we need to turn in those times tho. Loving yourself and doing the basic care things are sometimes huge accomplishments on bad days. Good luck friend. @@henessy.-.45 have you watched my other videos about how to separate matted locs?
Is this needed? I mean can’t he wash and twist them on his own? They look really good. Not sure I have the patience for freeform
He does wash in his own. You can see, in the video, that there are some spots that need more work with scrubbing and that's not something he has the energy to do so he likes to have me do it for him. These are definitely not free form. He has gotten maintenance on average for every 2-3 months for almost 10 years now.

Oh youre in VA. Im in raleigh NC. I have really long hair, no trim in 6 years. I wanna do something with it. Ive always liked that "viking" dreaded look. Idk if it would fit me tho. As of now i have no style tho just tied back
It's always worth a try if you feel called to do it. I have a video about dread shrinkage that should watch. It's important that you get trims. That video will show you why. Good luck!
So, you just save me my hairline and I think you so much. I am a Caucasian. I’ve had dreads for about 18 months now and I combined my dreads in the front together on the left side of my hairline so I had about three it took me about an hour to split them, but I finally did, I had no idea that had a mind of their own. I was terrified as I was slowly pulling them eventually I realize that they were around each other and I got them out. I crocheted them back into their own area and I’m so grateful for you beyond my wildest dreams.

I'm about to blunt all my ends. They're 10 years old and I'm having too much breakage.
Generally, in older Dreads, breakage is caused from weak spots that happened during different growth, phases, or maintenance phases. The way they were started, if there was any interlocking, if there wasn't a lot of back combing done, if they were made too hard too fast, blah blah blah… Those can all create weak spots. Maybe that's what your breakage is from?
What's wrong with blunted ends?
This video is for people who want to keep their ends soft and they keep trying to blunt.
@@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy, sorry I should have worded my question better, i was trying to ask what are the negative aspects of blunted ends?
I can't think of any negative aspects of blunted ends. I love them. Some people say it's more manicured or masculine looking. I think it's finished looking. It's a matter of taste. No functional benefits to having loose ends tho.
Please share how to clean up with the hook on the ends. Nice and slow and close up. Please sister!
