    Great insights- this type of tech is great when it works - I think I’ll set my dream boat at an older X-50 - a bit less tech to wrong - and if it does go wrong I can easily fix with reefing lines .

    Not to change the subject completely, but have you had nearly as many concerns with in-mast furling? The worry with in-mast is a jammed sail with no ability to drop in heavy weather. Great video BTW...

  • @MustadMarine
    @MustadMarine2 ай бұрын

    Thanks! Yeah, in mast systems have their pros and cons, of course. The reason for this video is the particular nature of the "FurlerBoom" and how impractical it is for cruising/racing. My client did a two-handed race to Hawaii and almost lost the gooseneck pin which would have been a disastrous nightmare. As it was, the pin bent as it was backing out, so they had to tie down the boom and finish the race under jib. Imagine a 300-400# boom loaded with a mainsail smashing about!

    @@MustadMarine Yeah, seems almost worth ripping all of them out. If a sailboat is going to live for 30 years through various hands, that system will make it through 0% of the time! I am planning on a boat for coastal sailing and then perhaps blue water. The coast part will likely be me singlehanding with guests helping 5% - would you suggest sticking w/ slab or in-mast (which seems more single-handing friendly)? Most new boats are in-mast these days, so there must be something there. Great videoa in your channel!

    Thanks for posting Arnstein! Would a one way valve on the wet exhaust system be advisable to install to alleviate the backflow to the genset?

  • @MustadMarine
    @MustadMarine3 ай бұрын

    I think the designer probably thought that backpressure from the genset (not running) would be enough to mitigate exhaust flow from the engine up the vertical hose up to the water separator. That may still be correct, after all the boat had run many years in its current configuration. However, when the water separator blew open and any potential backpressure was lost, the amount of exhaust gas and water going vertical was considerable (when engine revved up). So even with two exhaust exits -- port and starboard -- the engine exhaust system still had enough resistance for the flow to move vertically toward the genset (And what about genset running and engine turned off?). I am of the school that thinks each machinery (and bilge pump) should have its own exhaust port, never shared. Cheers!

    Excellent tips on the PSS shaft bearing install, maintenance and troubleshooting. I had the same issue when we hauled out for a prop shaft change and the yard (almost) forgot to burp the PSS. Great content depth. Thx for posting.

  • @MustadMarine

    Ahoy! I think something let go internally and poked a hole in the gearbox, which sounded very rough afterwards. It was replaced. A strange problem indeed.

    It has been my privilege and honor to visit while I was a soldier most of the allied cemeteries along the coasts of Italy and France, and in the interiors in Luxembourg, and I was honored to have been selected to participate in the 40th anniversary of the D-Day (Normandy) landings when President Reagan and other heads of state took part. I have two relatives who are among the dead of World War II; both were (or would have been had I yet been born) uncles -- one is buried in Luxembourg; I easily located his headstone. The other's remains could not be identified; he died among the last U.S. casualties in the Pacific Theater on the Island of Okinawa -- his grave is unmarked, but I hope to at least visit the area before I die. The graves of all those who fought and died for freedom, and continue to do so today, are monuments that can never be surpassed in importance and honor: they mark the best our kind has ever produced. Given the miserable state in which we currently find the western world -- with students taught to hate their own people and histories -- I find it particularly shameful to be alive now. Fortunately, I'm an old man and won't have to see these things much longer. But I am and will always be proud to be an American, a citizen of the Free World, and a U.S. military veteran. Thank you, all who sacrificed your health and your lives for us in past wars -- and especially, my father, who nearly died in the Pacific War. Thank you, to all those brave young people with whom I served in Viet Nam and other places, and who suffered and died, especially my brother who was killed at age 21. Thank you, my allied brethren. And thank you, those who continue to serve today (in spite of the worst political and military leadership in our history). You gave us freedom, though we have failed to live up to your sacrifices; but you were and are the stuff of which honor is made. -- An Old Man

    Lady Astor who is mentioned in the second verse of the d-day dodgers song was an American born British politician who was the first female member of the UK Parliament. She was known for her antisemitic and nazi sympathies. She is reputed to have said that the soldiers fighting in Anzio were dodging the D-Day landings in France. Hence the song, The D-day Dodgers. Churchill and Lady Astor didn't se eye to eye. She once said to him. 'If I were your wife I would poison your coffee'. Churchill replied 'Nancy if you were my wife, I would drink it'.

He came away from it with shrapnel still in his body 38 years later...

    This Pink Floyd song about Anzio is very powerful. Roger Waters’ father was killed there. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3-Jtc5tXaqxp7Q.html ‘When the Tigers Broke Free’ (was originally ‘Anzio 44’. It was just before dawn One miserable morning in black 'forty four When the forward commander Was told to sit tight When he asked that his men be withdrawn And the Generals gave thanks As the other ranks held back The enemy tanks for a while And the Anzio bridgehead Was held for the price Of a few hundred ordinary lives And kind old King George Sent mother a note When he heard that father was gone It was, I recall In the form of a scroll With gold leaf adorned And I found it one day In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away And my eyes still grow damp to remember His Majesty signed With his own rubber stamp It was dark all around There was frost in the ground When the tigers broke free And no one survived From the Royal Fusiliers Company C They were all left behind Most of them dead The rest of them dying And that's how the High Command Took my daddy from me.
