    Thanks for covering this topic so well. So...take aways. If in doubt, postpone flight. Use altimeter backups? Redundant ejection charges? For both? I saw another video where the builder used epoxy on inside of tube, more for buildup to meet nose cone couplers diameter, but for a zipper prevention. He had a good flight tho and couldn't tell if had really helped.

  • @pathtouch1
    @pathtouch125 күн бұрын

    So here I had redundant altimeters with separate batteries and separate charges. I make the backup charge 20% bigger than the primary. This way if the primary gets hung up, it has more pressure to separate things. I think my lesson learned here was take it off the pad even if it's a backup altimeter that loses continuity. It's not really a back up if it's not hooked up. Would a back up drogue charge have prevented the zipper? Maybe, maybe not but it wouldn't have been a bad thing.

    Did you ground test? Looks like the primary drogue charge popped and either vented out the after or through the coupler joint.

  • @pathtouch1
    @pathtouch1Ай бұрын

    Yea tested twice at home and had decent separation. I think there’s a KZread short on my channel of the ground testing. once you add in a little horizontal velocity I guess things were different. Also there’s a bit of gap around my 54mm to 75mm home made adapter and the vent hole is large so you’re spot on. Anyways I actually just flew this again today and had much better luck this time! Upped the drogue charge to 6 grams. Video coming later this week.

    Clean burn, no spitting or sputtering, yet "appears" to be low impulse. incrementally increase the red iron oxide in the composition. When it goes BOOM.. back off on the red iron oxide by 3 increments just to be safe. I is a self taught Яocket Scientist, i did everything before the internet existed. My success rate came from a failure rate which made me well known among my neighbors. Going to a National Rocket Shoot and speaking of my crazed adventures,, alarmed everyone there, who all informed me of store bought products that were "SAFE" and how they were trying to get away from the negative events people like me had experienced which put a bad light on the hobby Яocket scientist community... and i surly had a few bad days making and working with rockets & sugar fuel, so I got away from the experimentation as I had reached my end, I had done it all. now i'm to damn old, want to keep my eye brows, and Space X is a few hours south if I want to see a rocket fly and explode. Cheers,, Enjoy the fun, I sure did. (Hair grows back, eye & ears wont).

    Good eyes! This was a trial run at a vary low starting Kn of 200. This was a shake down run to start characterizing a basic propellent as part of a group experiment. This also used an Aerotech Phenolic Medusa nozzle which erroded qhite a bit so Kn went down to 150 ish throughout the burn. Max case pressure was like 350psi. Lessons learned, going to switch to graphite nozzles and run Kn's at 200, 250, and 300. Loved hearing some of the older stories, thanks for watcing!

  • @rcfreak2493

    This is not even remotely the proper way to characterize propellant. @pathtouch1 I strongly advise against this method.

  • @pathtouch1

    @@rcfreak2493appreciate any feedback, I’ve run this formula unchanged at three different Kn’s with a non erosive nozzle and recorded pressure data at 100Hz using an Altus Metrum EasyMotor. If you’re referring to the comment to increase ROI until it CATOs… I agree that isn’t the accepted practice now a days.

    That looked like 354ft to me. I'd be more worried about the snow getting in the electronics over the ejection blast. I've landed my JLCR in the canal and JL gratuitously replaced it. I also landed a JLCR on the baseball field lights and got it back two years later. JL replaced it also. Much appreciated.

  • @pathtouch1

    You’re probably right, probably make this an F motor minimum kit. So far I’ve been pretty lucky, as long as it stays below freezing the snow doesn’t get too wet. I’ll be in your neck of the woods next week! Visiting Kauai for some much needed sunshine. No rockets in my carry in sadly.

  • @peraltarockets
    @peraltarockets5 ай бұрын

    I like your alternative bulkhead. I was going to try epoxying in an eye bolt at the tip of the nose, but that'll do just fine. I'm running through a length of coat hanger wire to keep the epoxy plug in place at the tip of the nose. I also ended up putting fiberglass on the airframe and tip to tip on the fins. Overkill, but this way it'll be a tank.

    I launch with SCORE southwest of Pueblo, CO. If the rocket launch trends west to northwest, recovery ends up in rattlesnake country marching up and down the slopes of cliff lined dry washes and cedar trees. Desert hiking is part of the program. I definitely feel your pain, but I also have come to appreciate rocket recovery. Beautiful hikes and a great sense of accomplishment finally finding the damn thing. We don't need tree harnesses here, but an ability to rock climb comes in real handy. Thank the universe for GPS tracking. And yes, some days I only get one launch in because the first one took hours to finally find.

It even has a mode where if you can't get a lock on your rocket, other ones flown nearby can relay it's position to others if they're also using Featherweights, which a lot of club members do.

I'm not sure, I was uo there a few times but always drove, lol. I'm in Pennsylvania so its about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive depending on the traffic and how many times we stop. But, I really don't want to be driving 6 hours a day for that. So I'm gonna figure out something! But that L3 will be awesome! I have my NAR L1, and going to build my L2 soon. I'm pretty hooked on the LOC 5.5" Magnum 3E for my L2 bird. It's a great spot at URRG and I love that field. So I won't be afraid to go a little higher for a cert flight they don't loose many but it comes down to the GPS. I'm going to do that L2 attempt hopefully in April 2024, but probably May as the weather depends on it. But if it comes to it, I may do it at LDRS. I would really love to do the attempt before, if I'm successful I'll have access for next June to a few more. Then stay there for a while, try the L3 when I know I'm ready.
