Carbon fiber is stronger than steel, but only when the fibers are in tension like in a solid-fuel rocket casing. This submersible put carbon fibers in compression. The strength of the sub's walls came from the resin holding the fibers rigid. We know how that worked out. The sub was basically a contraption that failed.

From the first I heard of the Titan and with a minimal amount of sleuthing, I realized that Rush was what we in the aviation field call a "Cowboy". Those folks who were ignorant enough to go aboard the vessel were richer than they were smart.
